Kurma Purana — Upari Vibhaga — Chapter 10

KuP 2 10.1

īśvara uvāca aliṅgamekamavyaktaṃ liṅgaṃ brahmeti niścitam / svayañjyotiḥ paraṃ tattvaṃ pare vyomni vyavasthitam

The Lord said: The one, unmanifest, markless (aliṅga) is determined to be the mark (liṅga) that is Brahman — the self-luminous supreme reality, established in the highest sky.

avyaktaṃ kāraṇaṃ yattadakṣaraṃ paramaṃ padam / nirguṇaṃ śuddhavijñānaṃ tad vai paśyanti sūrayaḥ

That which is the unmanifest cause, the imperishable, the supreme abode, without qualities, pure knowing — that indeed the wise see.

tanniṣṭhāḥ śāntasaṃkalpā nityaṃ tadbhāvabhāvitāḥ / paśyanti tat paraṃ brahma yattalliṅgamiti śrutiḥ

Devoted to that, their intentions stilled, ever suffused with the thought of it, they see that supreme Brahman; that (Brahman) is the liṅga — so says scripture.

KuP 2 10.4

anyathā nahi māṃ draṣṭuṃ śakyaṃ vai munipuṅgavāḥ / nahi tad vidyate jñānaṃ yatastajjñāyate param

Otherwise I cannot be seen, O bulls among sages; for there exists no (other) knowledge by which that Supreme could be known.

KuP 2 10.5

etattatparamaṃ jñānaṃ kevalaṃ kavayo viduḥ / ajñānamitarat sarvaṃ yasmānmāyāmayaṃ jagat

This is that supreme knowledge, which the wise alone know; all else is ignorance, since the world is made of illusion.

KuP 2 10.6

yajjñānaṃ nirmalaṃ sūkṣmaṃ nirvikalpaṃ yadavyayam / mamātmāsau tadevemiti prāhurvipaścitaḥ

That knowledge which is spotless, subtle, free of differentiation, imperishable — 'this very thing is my Self' — so the learned declare.

KuP 2 10.7

ye 'pyanekaṃ prapaśyanti te 'pi paśyanti tatparam / āśritāḥ paramāṃ niṣṭhāṃ buddhvaikaṃ tattvamavyayam

Even those who see (Him) as many, they too see that Supreme, having resorted to the highest steadfastness, having understood the one imperishable reality.

KuP 2 10.8

ye punaḥ paramaṃ tattvamekaṃ vānekamīśvaram / bhaktyā māṃ saṃprapaśyanti vijñeyāste tadātmakāḥ

But those who, with devotion, fully behold me, the Lord, the supreme reality, as one or as many — they are to be known as having their being in That.

sākṣādeva prapaśyanti svātmānaṃ parameśvaram / nityānandaṃ nirvikalpaṃ satyarūpamiti sthitiḥ

They behold directly their own Self as the Supreme Lord, of everlasting bliss, free of differentiation, whose form is truth — such is (their) state.

KuP 2 10.10

bhajante paramānandaṃ sarvagaṃ yattadātmakam / svātmanyavasthitāḥ śāntāḥ pare 'vyakte parasya tu

They worship the supreme bliss, all-pervading, which has the nature of That; abiding in their own Self, at peace, in the supreme unmanifest of the Supreme.

KuP 2 10.11

eṣā vimuktiḥ paramā mama sāyujyamuttamam / nirvāṇaṃ brahmaṇā caikyaṃ kaivalyaṃ kavayo viduḥ

This is the highest release, the excellent union with me; the wise know it as extinction, as oneness with Brahman, as isolation (kaivalya).

KuP 2 10.12

tasmādanādimadhyāntaṃ vastvekaṃ paramaṃ śivam / sa īśvaro mahādevastaṃ vijñāya vimucyate

Therefore the one supreme entity, without beginning, middle or end, is Śiva; He is the Lord, the Great God — knowing Him, one is released.

na tatra sūryaḥ pravibhātīha candro na nakṣatrāṇi tapano nota vidyut / tadbhāsedamakhilaṃ bhāti nityaṃ tannityabhāsamacalaṃ sadvibhāti

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon here, nor the stars, nor fire, nor lightning; by its shining all this shines constantly; that, of constant shining, unmoving, real, shines forth.

nityoditaṃ saṃvidā nirvikalpaṃ śuddhaṃ bṛhantaṃ paramaṃ yadvibhāti / atrāntaraṃ brahmavido 'tha nityaṃ paśyanti tattvamacalaṃ yat sa īśaḥ

That which shines forth as eternally risen, as pure awareness, free of all differentiation, pure, vast, supreme — herein the knowers of brahman then see continually that unmoving reality, which is the Lord.

nityānandamamṛtaṃ satyarūpaṃ śuddhaṃ vadanti puruṣaṃ sarvavedāḥ / tadevedamiti praṇaveneśitāraṃ dhāyāyanti vedārthaviniścitārthāḥ

All the Vedas declare the Person to be eternal bliss, deathless, of the nature of truth, pure; and those who have determined the meaning of the Vedas' teaching meditate by means of the syllable OM on the Ruler, (thinking) "this here is just That."

KuP 2 10.16

na bhūmirāpo na mano na vahniḥ prāṇo 'nilo gaganaṃ nota buddhiḥ / na cetano 'nyat paramākāśamadhye vibhāti devaḥ śiva eva kevalaḥ

Not earth, not water, not mind, not fire, not breath, not wind, not sky, nor intellect, nor the conscious (self), nor anything else: in the midst of the supreme space the God shines forth, Śiva alone.

ityetaduktaṃ paramaṃ rahasyaṃ jñānāmṛtaṃ sarvavedeṣu gūḍham / jānāti yogī vijane 'tha deśe yuñjīta yogaṃ prayato hyajasram

Thus has this supreme secret been declared, the nectar of knowledge hidden in all the Vedas. The yogin who knows it should, in a solitary place, practice yoga, restrained and unceasingly.
