Of Vāsudeva, by Rukmiṇī, was born Pradyumna, desiring Lakṣmī, firm in his vows, the ender of Śambara, of a form lovely as Kāma's — he who is celebrated in the ancient lore as Sanatkumāra. When seven nights were complete, at midnight, Kālaśambara carried him off, Kṛṣṇa's infant son, from the birthing-chamber.

Urged on by Time, the dānava gave that son of Vāsudeva to his queen, who longed (for a child), as a son, as though (her) own child. And Māyāvatī, on seeing him, with her body-hair bristling (with delight), filled with great joy, gazed at him again and again. Then, as she looked, memory arose in her: "This was that lover of mine" — so remembering, she reflected thus: "This is that lord, my husband, for whose sake day and night, sunk in a lake of anxiety and grief, I find no pleasure anywhere. This is he whom formerly the Lord, the god of gods, the bearer of the trident, being vexed, made bodiless — whom I saw in another birth. How shall I give him the breast, knowing (him) in the feeling of a mother? Rather, having become the wife of a husband, shall I address (him) as 'son'?" Having thus reflected in her mind, she handed him over to a nurse, and by applications of elixirs made him grow up quickly. And he, the son of Rukmiṇī, hearing of her from the nurse, out of ignorance thought Māyāvatī to be his very own mother. She reared him, the lotus-eyed son of Kṛṣṇa, and gave him all the dānava magics, being deluded by desire.

A dark woman with very beautiful hair, adorned in white garments, lotus in hand, gazing (at me), entered my dwelling. By her I was again taken and bathed with bright water.
