The din of weapons and the twang of the bowstrings of the great-souled ones swallowed up the sound of kettledrums, conches, mṛdaṅgas and flutes in the battle. [87.77] Janārdana pierced him deeply with seventy arrows; and the mighty one, striving, cut down his banner, and the valiant one took the charioteer's head from his body. Perceiving him to be in straits, all those southern kings surrounded Janārdana, seeking to kill him. Aṃśumān of great arms pierced him with ten arrows, Śrutarvā in anger with five, and Veṇudāri with seven. Then valiant Govinda pierced Aṃśumān in the chest, and that king, in pain, sank down on the floor of his chariot. He killed Śrutarvan's four horses with four arrows; Veṇudāri, cutting down his banner, pierced his right arm. And in the same way he pierced Śrutarvan with seven arrows; exhausted, he leaned against the flagstaff and sat down, overcome with pain. Then, loosing showers of arrows, the chiefs of the Krathas and Kaiśikas came at Vāsudeva from every side with their array of chariots. Janārdana cut their arrows with arrows in the fight, and in fury killed many of them as they struggled and strove. Again he killed sixty-four others with sharp arrows, enraged ones rushing at him — the hero; then that army fled. In the meantime the illustrious hero Balabhadra struck the hero Jarāsaṃdha with his club in the great battle. The king lost consciousness and fell to the ground. And Sātyaki killed the king of Vaṅga with sharp arrows. That army turned its back when Jarāsaṃdha too had fallen. Sātyaki and Balabhadra, having conquered warriors by the thousand, the two lords blew their conches, standing before them all. Then, when the army had scattered and Jarāsaṃdha was defeated, Janārdana, hearing the sound of the conches of those two, even as he went (thought): 'The army of the king of Magadha, which had the support of many kings, is conquered.' Having thought thus, the mighty Vāsudeva, upholder of the Yadu line, blew Pāñcajanya, the great conch. But Rukmī, hearing that Rukmiṇī was being carried off by Kṛṣṇa, in anger made a vow in Bhīṣmaka's presence.

Then Rukmī, taking up another bow in his desire to kill Kṛṣṇa, that valiant one, brought forth divine, blazing weapons: the weapon of Vāyu, of Varuṇa, of great Indra, and of Nirṛti, the Paiśāca, the Rākṣasa, the Raudra, and the Māheśvara. These divine weapons he loosed against Keśava in the battle; with those very (weapons) Govinda, Janārdana, struck them down. And in the Vidarbha country he built another great city for his dwelling; it became renowned on earth by the very name Bhojakaṭa — [88.32] the birthplace of the blessed great-souled son of Bhṛgu. Mighty Rukmin ruled it, and there indeed he lived; there by his strength that man of great splendour governed the southern region, while the high-minded king Bhīṣmaka dwelt in Kuṇḍina. [88.33] Jarāsaṃdha too, having regained consciousness, reached his own city together with all the kings, his face bowed down. Śiśupāla too, dull-witted, overcome with shame, with his kinsmen — this man who had been seen by the townsfolk and country folk as the husband of the Bhoja king's daughter, now that it had turned out otherwise, went out from his own city. "Who indeed here is now able, while Kṛṣṇa lives, together with Bala and with Sātyaki, to do otherwise with Rukmiṇī?" — so all the townsfolk, seeing that Sunītha of feeble prowess, the king going to his own city, said to one another. When Rāma, accompanied by the Vṛṣṇi army, had reached Dvārakā, the lord Keśava took Rukmiṇī's hand according to the rite.
