Then Baladeva obtained Revata's daughter Revatī, esteemed for her character, with Kṛṣṇa's consent at that time. — He who caused to be built, with high-grade goods produced from creation, pleasing to the hosts of gods, and with goods laid up in the ocean and born of the ocean, the delightful crest-jewel of the whole world, glorious Dvārakā, the best of cities — to him, to Viṣṇu, I go. — And at just this time the mighty Jarāsaṃdha set the kings in motion, wishing to please the king of Cedi. The king offered honour as was due and as was fitting, and the Māgadha proclaimed the marriage of Śiśupāla. And the whole inner apartments were, indeed, eager for the wedding. "Tomorrow is the wedding of the Caidya" — and so the rulers of the earth arrived, equipped, each in order with his own splendour. King Śiśupāla too, arrayed in bridegroom's dress, with princes his equals, then abided by the observances: "With Bhīṣmaka's daughter Rukmiṇī, the gold-ornamented one, the marriage of King Śiśupāla is to take place" — so it was said.

Seeing her of auspicious appearance, Kṛṣṇa's desire grew, as the flame of fire (grows) with an oblation; he fixed his mind upon her. (HV 87.39) And then the lady Rukmiṇī saw Kṛṣṇa the lord. And that lady, seeing Kṛṣṇa standing there, thought: 'This is Viṣṇu, lord of the world, in person, the younger brother of Rāma, the accomplished one. Upon both his arms are always his discus and his conch; and those two, the cleavers of Daityas and Dānavas, always adorn (him). In his hand rests the Śārṅga bow, terrifying to Daityas and Dānavas; that great bow of Hari, most renowned in the world, ever shines. Upon whose arm rests the goddess-mace named Kaumodakī, the dreadful slayer of Daityas and Dānavas. By whose permission the sword named Nandaka slays enemies of great might, unbearable even to the gods. This Viṣṇu's mount would be Garutmān, the bull among birds, who, conquering Śakra and the other gods, carried off the supreme nectar. This is that Viṣṇu, the venerable one himself, adorned in cowherd's garb, who sported at will among the heavy breasts of the cowherd women. It was Hari who then danced in that pool of the Yamunā, and there churned Kāliya, garlanded with the flames of the fire of his venom. This one held up Mount Govardhana with a single arm, in play, that lord of the world, as a boy (holds) a small ball. This is that lotus-eyed one who slew the horse (demon). And Govinda, having killed Cāṇūra in combat and Kaṃsa too, of great strength, danced in the arena together with the cowherds and the Yādavas. This is that best of the Yādavas, with eyes like the filaments of a lotus, dark yet radiant, endowed with splendour, in person the younger brother of Indra, the accomplished one. Young, accomplished, ancient of soul, lotus-eyed, splendid as a lotus — this lord of the world, this Yādava, has today come to me here. Without doubt I will bear up the lotus of his feet; I will devote myself to the service of those feet called lotuses.' Having thought thus, she then paid homage to that Śacī. And Keśava of very great strength, having resolved together with Rāma and having informed the Vṛṣṇis, set his mind upon carrying her off.

Where indeed is the king of those born in the Yadu line? Where is Rāma, contemptible in his drunken intoxication? Where is that hero Sātyaki, said to be (great) in battle?' — speaking thus, those best of kings, yoked for battle with their forces, together with the Māgadhas, striking (foes) down in the fight with arrows and swords, the great warriors of fierce might marched out. Then, great king, in the army of the great-souled king of Magadha conches and drums sounded, announcing battle; and the Yādavas too, great king, blew their conches one after another. The Māgadha pierced him as he rushed on with three iron arrows; the wielder of the pestle in anger pierced him with eight iron arrows and cut off his jewel-adorned banner with a broad-headed shaft. [87.72] And the plough-bearer with arrows (cut) his great drawn bow, and, great king, smashed his chariot into pieces small as sesame seeds. With his bow cut and his chariot gone, the Māgadha took up a club and struck Balabhadra and beat him again and again; and that Māgadha ground his chariot to powder with the club. As that chariot was being brought down, the plough-bearer leapt off and went to Sātyaki's chariot, while all the kṣatriyas looked on. But Sātyaki, great king, pierced the Māgadha with arrows. Baladeva, great king, quickly taking up his club, struck the Māgadha in the battle as Hari (Indra) strikes a mountain with the thunderbolt. That fight of theirs became terrible, like the fight of gods and asuras, not to be checked by arrows, (roaring) like the surging flood of the great ocean, as they loosed showers of arrows and struck at each other.
