They attacked half of the array, which was guarded by Mṛdura. There a great battle took place, like that of gods and demons — of the few against the many, by reason of their reliance on Vāsudeva. Thus was their battle, increasing the joy of the brave, generating terror in cowards, enlarging the realm of Yama; (guarded) too by many kings headed by Veṇudāri, and by westerners swollen with force, and by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Then there came about very great battles of the Vṛṣṇis with the Māgadha's chief ministers and with the kings who were his followers.

But King Jarāsaṃdha's encounter was with Rāma, terrible and hair-raising, like that of great Indra with Vṛtra. Kṛṣṇa, out of regard for Rukmiṇī, did not crush Rukmin; Kṛṣṇa merely warded off his arrows — which resembled the rays of blazing fire and the sun, and were like the venom of vipers — by his skill. Of the others there was a very great destruction of the floods of troops; of both armies, O king, (the ground became) a mire of flesh and blood.

Very many headless trunks rose up on every side, and ghouls and rākṣasas greedy for flesh and blood; in that crush of warriors no clear reckoning (of the dead) was to be had.

Rāma, mounted on a chariot, the hero, went against Jarāsaṃdha, covering him with arrows like vipers; and that king of Magadha advanced against him swiftly in his fast-moving chariot. Piercing each other again and again with various weapons, they both roared. When their missiles were spent, chariotless, their horses slain and their drivers slain, the two valiant ones took up clubs and ran at each other.

Making the earth tremble, those two heroes with their great clubs upraised — the two great-souled ones were seen like two mountains with their peaks.

The battles ceased, (the warriors) watching those two bulls among men, furious, rushing at each other, renowned in club-fighting.

Then the gods with the gandharvas, the siddhas and the supreme sages, and apsarases from every side, came together by the thousands. And the blessed Grandfather came to see the fight. That (place), adorned with gods, yakṣas, gandharvas and great sages, shone exceedingly, O king, like the sky with its hosts of lights.

The fall of Rāma's club upon Jarāsaṃdha's foot was heard like the crash of a thunderbolt, as of a mountain splitting.

The club loosed from Jarāsaṃdha's hand did not make Rāma tremble — the best of club-bearers, unmoving like the Vindhya mountain.

But that lord of Magadha, by his valour, bore the force of Rāma's club, and with great steadiness and skill turned it aside. Thus those two mighty ones, moving about there in the battle, those tamers of foes, ranged through varied circling manoeuvres. Exerting themselves for a long time, they stood exhausted; and having recovered for a moment, they struck at each other again. Thus those two chief warriors fought evenly for a long while, and neither of the two turned away from the fight. Then the valorous Rāma perceived (the other's) superiority in club-fighting; angered, he cast aside the club and took up his excellent pestle. Seeing that pestle then upraised, terrible to look upon, unfailing, by the angered Baladeva in the great battle — then Rāmabhadra, enraged, went at him with the club; and Jarāsaṃdha struck Balabhadra with his club. Then the first club-stroke was taken by Rāma, the second by the lord of Magadha, the third by the plough-armed one, the fourth by Jarāsaṃdha, and the fifth by the upholder of the Yadus. And the stamping of their feet made the earth shake. Then the gods with the gandharvas, and the yakṣas and the supreme sages, frightened, cried 'Safety!' for the worlds and for Brahmā. Then the enraged son of Jarā struck (Rāma) on the chest; and Rāma vomited blood and became exhausted. Having rested a little on the ground, the Yādava rose again, and striking (him) on the head with his club, roared a lion's roar. And the hero fell to the earth, breathing hard like one whose life had gone; 'Jarāsaṃdha is slain, slain!' said the lords of the Yādavas. But the majestic Jarāsaṃdha quickly regained consciousness and struck the plough-armed one with his club right on the chest. And (Rāma) fell into a swoon, and regained consciousness; then the mass of blood gushed forth and shone like water. With all their limbs battered by the clubs they glowed like two kiṃśuka trees; blazing, O lord of kings, chariotless, without bows, struck by clubs, the two great heroes, alone, taking pleasure in battle, shone with clubs in their hands, each seeking the other's death — the two shone like two Deaths come together, O lord of kings. Then the plough-bearer, enraged, wished to cut down the son of Jarā, and crushed his thighs with the club in the assembly of kings. Blood came from the thighs, and then marrow appeared. Then the plough-bearer looked to cut off Jarāsaṃdha's head. Then there was a voice in the sky, sweet-toned, witness of the worlds; it spoke to that Baladeva with his plough-weapon upraised: 'He is not to be slain by you, Rāma; enough of this toil, Mādhava.

The battle of those great-souled ones went on unbroken for a long time, O great king, as they slew one another. All of them, O king, defeated by Kṛṣṇa the slayer of foes, went off together with Jarāsaṃdha as they had come. When King Jarāsaṃdha was defeated and had withdrawn, the sun having set, they did not pursue him then in the night. And the greatly fortunate Vṛṣṇis, who had Kṛṣṇa and Saṃkarṣaṇa for their support, having gathered their own army, the mighty ones who had gained their aim, entered the city joyfully, honoured by Keśava. The weapons that had fallen from the sky then vanished. King Jarāsaṃdha too went dejected to his own city; and the kings who were his followers went each to his own realm. But though they had conquered Jarāsaṃdha, the Vṛṣṇis did not think him conquered, O tiger of the Kurus, for that king was exceedingly strong. For what king on earth, though world-renowned, could be able to conquer Jarāsaṃdha in battle — even Śatakratu (Indra) in person? Eighteen battles did the Yādavas give Jarāsaṃdha, and yet those great chariot-warriors were not able to kill him in combat. But Kṛṣṇa, O king, though able in battle (to slay) the Māgadha, knowing that his death was to be another's, did not, lord as he was, destroy him. For he had twenty akṣauhiṇīs, O bull of the Bharatas — King Jarāsaṃdha's, which had assembled for that purpose.
