Harivamsha — Chapter 8

HV 8.1

vṛṣṇivaṃśaprasaṅgena kathyamānaṃ purātanam nityaḥ sarvagataḥ sūkṣmaḥ śāśvataḥ puruṣottamaḥ | yatrotpanno mahātmā sa harir vṛṣṇikule prabhuḥ // HV_7.56 sarvāsuravināśāya sarvalokahitāya ca | vivasvān kaśyapāj jajñe dākṣāyaṇyām ariṃdama tasya bhāryābhavat saṃjñā tvāṣṭrī devī vivasvataḥ sureṇur iti vikhyātā triṣu lokeṣu bhāminī

(what is) ancient, being told in connection with the lineage of the Vṛṣṇis — eternal, all-pervading, subtle, everlasting is the Supreme Person, in which (family) that great-souled Hari, the lord, was born in the Vṛṣṇi clan, (HV 7.56) for the destruction of all asuras and for the welfare of all the worlds. Vivasvān was born of Kaśyapa from Dākṣāyaṇī, O subduer of foes. Vivasvān's wife was Saṃjñā, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, a goddess famed in the three worlds as Sureṇu, that lovely woman.

HV 8.2

सा वै भार्या भगवतो मार्तण्डस्य महात्मनः भर्तृरूपेण नातुष्यद् रूपयौवनशालिनी संज्ञा नाम स्वतपसा दीप्तेनेह समन्विता

sā vai bhāryā bhagavato mārtaṇḍasya mahātmanaḥ bhartṛrūpeṇa nātuṣyad rūpayauvanaśālinī saṃjñā nāma svatapasā dīpteneha samanvitā

She indeed, the wife of the blessed great-souled Mārtaṇḍa, was not pleased with her husband's form, though she herself was endowed with beauty and youth — she named Saṃjñā, here endowed with her own blazing austerity.

HV 8.3

आदित्यस्य हि तद्रूपं मार्तण्डस्य स्वतेजसा गात्रेषु परिदग्धं वै नातिकान्तम् इवाभवत्

ādityasya hi tadrūpaṃ mārtaṇḍasya svatejasā gātreṣu paridagdhaṃ vai nātikāntam ivābhavat

For that form of Āditya Mārtaṇḍa, scorched all over in its limbs by his own heat, was as if not very pleasing.

HV 8.4

na khalv ayaṃ mṛto 'ṇḍastha iti snehād abhāṣata ajānan kāśyapas tasmān mārtaṇḍa iti cocyate

"Surely this one within the egg is not dead" — so, out of affection, Kāśyapa said, not knowing; hence he is called Mārtaṇḍa.

HV 8.5

tejas tv abhyadhikaṃ tāta nityam eva vivasvataḥ yenātitāpayāmāsa trīṃl lokān kaśyapātmajaḥ

But the heat of Vivasvān was always excessive, my dear, by which that son of Kaśyapa scorched the three worlds exceedingly.

HV 8.6

Three offspring, O Kauravya, did Āditya, best of the burning ones, beget in Saṃjñā: a daughter and two lords of creatures.

manur vaivasvataḥ pūrvaṃ śrāddhadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ yamaś ca yamunā caiva yamajau saṃbabhūvatuḥ

First, Manu Vaivasvata, Śrāddhadeva, the lord of creatures; and Yama and Yamunā were born as twins.

But seeing that this form of Vivasvat was dark-hued, Saṃjñā, unable to bear it, then fashioned her own shadow, of like colour; and that shadow, made of illusion, arose from Saṃjñā.

With palms joined and bowing, O lord of men, the Shadow said to Saṃjñā: "What is to be done by me? Tell me, bright-smiling one. I stand at your command; instruct me, fair-hued lady."

samādhāya savarṇāṃ tu tathety uktā tayā ca sā tvaṣṭuḥ samīpam agamad vrīḍiteva manasvinī

Having instructed Savarṇā, and being answered by her with "so be it," that spirited woman went into her father Tvaṣṭṛ's presence, as if ashamed.

But the fair one, having come to her father, was rebuked by her father and directed again and again: "Go to your husband's presence." She fell into great worry, thinking, "Fie on the doings of women!" She reproached herself much and reproached womanhood exceedingly. "There is nowhere for women to stay; fie on a life without independence! In childhood, in youth, in old age, there is fear from father, husband, and son. Alas, the husband's house was abandoned by me out of folly, ill-behaved as I was—and even undetected by the Creator, (I left) my husband's dwelling. There that Savarṇā is, with her desires all fulfilled. Through folly the husband's house is lost; here in my father's house there is no good either." So the blameless one went, becoming a mare, concealing her form; and having gone to the northern Kurus, she fed there only on grass.

dvitīyāyāṃ tu saṃjñāyāṃ saṃjñeyam iti cintayan ādityo janayāmāsa putram ātmasamaṃ tadā

And on the second Saṃjñā, thinking "this is Saṃjñā," the Sun then begot a son equal to himself.

"He is like the earlier-born Manu," (thought) the lord, my dear; so he became Manu indeed, and by name he is called Sāvarṇa.

saṃjñā tu pārthivī tāta svasya putrasya vai tadā cakārābhyadhikaṃ snehaṃ na tathā pūrvajeṣu vai

But Saṃjñā (the second, the earthly one), my dear, then showed greater affection to her own son, and not so much to the earlier-born ones.

manus tasyāḥ kṣamat tat tu yamas tasyā na cakṣame tāṃ vai roṣāc ca bālyāc ca bhāvino 'rthasya vā balāt padā saṃtarjayāmāsa saṃjñāṃ vaivasvato yamaḥ

Manu bore that from her, but Yama did not bear it from her; out of anger and out of childishness—or by the force of what was destined—Yama Vaivasvata threatened Saṃjñā with his foot.

HV 8.20

"Without doubt, my son, there will be some great cause in this, that you, ever devoted to dharma, have abandoned this dharma—whereby anger entered you, who know dharma and speak truth. It is indeed proper for you to carry out your mother's word, sinless one; but your mother's word cannot be made false: worms shall take away flesh from your foot, O greatly wise one, and go into the earth, and thereafter you shall attain ease. Thus your mother's word will have been made true, and by this averting of the curse you too will be saved."

And the Sun said to Saṃjñā: "Why is greater affection shown, again and again, among sons who are equal?" She, evading it, did not tell Vivasvat. Composing himself, he saw the truth by yoga, and he seized her by the hair; and she then declared herself. She had concealed herself, but not from his union (with the truth). Wishing to curse her to destruction, O delight of the Kurus, the lord seized her by the hair; and she, when the appointed limit had been passed, then told Vivasvat everything as it had happened. Hearing that, Vivasvat went in anger to Tvaṣṭṛ.

Then, upon that consent, Tvaṣṭṛ set the splendour of Mārtaṇḍa Vivasvat upon the lathe and pared it down, O Bhārata. // 8.34 He made (of it) an eighth part; the imperishable (portion) he did not pare away. That Vaiṣṇava splendour which was pared from the sun by Viśvakarman — with that very splendour Tvaṣṭṛ fashioned the discus of Viṣṇu, and the trident of Śarva, and the palanquin of the giver of wealth, the spear of Guha, and the choicest weapon of the other gods: all that Viśvakarman fashioned with that splendour. Then the form, made to shine with the splendour thus drawn in, lovelier than lovely to look upon, shone exceedingly. // 8.35 The form was refashioned upon the face of that god, the lord of rays; from that time on the god's face was red. But that facial glow of Mārtaṇḍa which had earlier fallen from his face — from it here the twelve Ādityas came to be, sprung from the face: Dhātṛ and Aryaman and Mitra and Varuṇa, Aṃśa and Bhaga likewise, Indra, Vivasvat and Pūṣan, and Parjanya the tenth, then Tvaṣṭṛ, then Viṣṇu, not the least though born last. Then the god took joy, seeing the Ādityas born of his own body. With perfumes, flowers, ornaments, and a shining crown Tvaṣṭṛ honoured him thus, and spoke these words: "Go, lord of gods, to your own wife; she roams among the northern Kurus; having taken the form of a mare she roams in the grassy wood." Then, having taken a like form, with fair sport, he saw his own wife; having resorted to yoga he then saw his wife the mare, unassailable by all beings through her splendour and her observance, // 8.36 roaming in the body of a mare, O king, fearless from every quarter. He, the lord, in the form of a horse, impregnated her at the mouth as she turned away from the coupling out of suspicion that he was another male.
