For those two the great chariot-warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas made the water-offering, and, pronouncing the 'imperishable' (formula) for the departed, they set out. // (78.46) Pronouncing the 'imperishable' for the departed, they set out; and Hari (gave) ten crores of gold and fine gold; cows, jewels, garments, villages reckoned as towns — the best of kings gave (these) to the brahmins on Kaṃsa's behalf. Having given water for those two, the Yādavas, dejected in mind, placing Ugrasena in front, entered the city of Mathurā. // (78.47) All the connections of his own clan, afflicted from every quarter by fear of Kaṃsa — Yadus, Vṛṣṇis, Andhakas, Madhus, Dāśārhas, Kukuras and the rest — honoured and consoled, worn down by dwelling in foreign lands, the maker of all settled in their own houses, gratifying them with wealth. Guarded by the arms of Kṛṣṇa and Saṃkarṣaṇa, their heart's wishes attained, fulfilled, their fever gone through Kṛṣṇa and Rāma, they took their pleasure in their own homes, day after day gazing with delight on the lotus face of Mukunda, ever joyful, glorious, with its kindly smiling glances. There that mighty Kṛṣṇa, joined with the son of Rohiṇī, dwelt happily in Mathurā, that city under the Yādavas' sway. // (79.1) Then, O lord of kings, the Blessed One, the son of Devakī, and Saṃkarṣaṇa, coming to Nanda and embracing him, said this: 'By you two, so affectionate, we were nourished and much fondled as by a father; parents' love for their children is greater even than for themselves. He is a father and she a mother who nourish, like their own sons, children abandoned by their kin, with ornaments, feeding and protection. Go you to Vraja, dear one; and we too shall come to see your kinsmen who are pained by affection, once we have secured the well-being of our friends.' Having thus comforted Nanda's Vraja, the Blessed, unfallen one respectfully gratified them with the finest garments, ornaments and adornments. Addressed thus, Nanda embraced the two, overwhelmed with love, and, filling his eyes with tears, went with the cowherds to Vraja. And the hero, his body having reached youth, blazing, endowed with royal splendour, made Mathurā adorned with jewel-treasures.

Then both heroes, knowers of dharma and practisers of dharma, went to the teacher Sāṃdīpani, wishing to master the science of archery. Having approached that best of teachers of archers and bowed to him, honoured by him, O king, they roamed about among the Avantis. But Janārdana, having slain Pañcajana, obtained the conch which is known among gods and men as Pāñcajanya. Then Viṣṇu, his eyes red with anger, went to the city of Yama; and Viṣṇu addressed the mighty Yama, seated on his throne: "Let the son of Sāṃdīpani of Kāśi be given up." Then (Yama) said to Viṣṇu: "He has been carried off by Death, O Hari." Addressed thus by Yama, Kṛṣṇa of measureless valour then said, "Ah, the insolence of Death!" and took up his bow. Taking up a sharp arrow, he said, "Let him be given." Recognising that Viṣṇu was angry, (Yama) did indeed hand over the boy. Then the Supreme Person, having conquered the god son of Vivasvat, the Unfallen One reached that boy, his teacher's son. Blowing his conch, Govinda terrified the people. Then Yama approached and did homage to the wielder of the mace, and said, "What is the purpose of your coming? What shall I do?" Then Kṛṣṇa said to him: "Let my teacher's son be handed over." There a very terrible great battle took place between the two; and he brought back from Yama's abode the teacher's son, long lost.
