ugrasenas tu kṛṣṇasya samīpaṃ duḥkhito yayau putraśokābhisaṃtapto viṣapīta iva skhalan

But Ugrasena, sorrowing, went into Kṛṣṇa's presence, scorched with grief for his son, stumbling as though he had drunk poison.

And having heard the many piteous laments of Kaṃsa's (women), reproaching himself there in the assembly of the Yādavas, // 78.3 Kṛṣṇa spoke it all out while everyone listened: "Alas, by me, in my extreme childishness, following a man's rage, the widowhood of thousands of women has been brought about for this Kaṃsa's sake."

kāruṇyaṃ khalu nārīṣu prākṛtasyāpi jāyate evam ārtaṃ rudantīṣu mayā bhartari pātite

Surely pity arises in even a common man toward women, when they weep thus in anguish, their husband struck down by me.

paridevitamātreṇa śokaḥ khalu vidhīyate kṛtāntasyānabhijñātaḥ strīṇāṃ kāruṇyasaṃbhavaḥ

By mere lamenting, grief is (only) prolonged; the rise of pity in women comes from not understanding Fate.

This Kaṃsa has been slain by me — let this be rightly understood: a cutting off at the root has been made of his perverse conduct. If (such a man) were not slain, the world would perish through his evil ways. For who indeed would do such a deed, having bound his own father by force? He would forever have made the kingdom, with all its vassals, (his own). Therefore let all these women, stricken with grief, be consoled, and let the townsfolk in the city and the guilds — let them all be consoled.

While Govinda was speaking thus, Ugrasena of great splendour entered with face bowed down, (approaching) Kṛṣṇa whose eyes were clouded with tears; thus he came, lamenting, into the assembly of the Yādavas. Ugrasena, apprehensive because of his son's crime, taking the Yadus with him — together with all the Vṛṣṇis headed by Śini — then said this to lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa in the Yadu assembly, in a voice choked with tears, pitiful and faltering:

For when the undertaking has thus been arranged, and the conflict is finished, Kṛṣṇa, and the earth of the Yadus is set firm, O slayer of foes — you are both the going and the coming of the Yadus, O joy of the Yadus. Hear, hero, this word of us wretched ones as we speak it: for this Kaṃsa of evil deeds, burnt up by your wrath, let the funeral rites be performed by your grace, O Govinda.

Kaṃsa shall obtain his funeral rite, O king, even though he has gone among the dead. Your birth is in a great family, you have known the Vedas; how is it, sir, that fate, which cannot be overstepped, is not recognised? For beings both immobile and mobile, O lord of earth, the deed done in a former birth ripens in due time. Learned, wealthy, generous, pleasing to look upon, devoted to brahmins, endowed with policy, showing favour to the poor, equal to the world-guardians, sir, of prowess equal to great Indra's — even such rulers of earth are carried off by Death, O best of kings. Righteous men, knowers of every disposition, intent on protecting their subjects, devoted to the kṣatriya law, self-controlled — they have gone to destruction by Time. Whatever deed one has done oneself, whether good or bad, that deed becomes visible for all embodied beings when the time comes. This is the hidden illusion, hard to know even for the gods — how this world is bewildered; and here the deed alone is the cause. Kaṃsa was struck down by Time, driven on by his former deeds; he is not the cause there — Time and the deed are the cause. This whole world of moving and unmoving things, sir, consisting of sun and moon, having gone to destruction by Time, is born again by Time alone. Time is intent on the restraining and the releasing of all beings; therefore all beings are subject to Time. As for your son, O ruler of men, who was burnt by his own fault, I am not the cause there — Time is the cause there. Or else I shall be the cause — of that there is no doubt; but what will Time, bent on flight, do without a cause? Time is mighty, O king, and its course is hard to know — that course to which those who see equally, who discern the higher and the lower, go. That is the course of Time, whereby everything is Time's domain. Let the word I speak, sir, be carried out.
