Uttering a great cry of pain, that best of tusked beasts, now tuskless, fell together with its driver, like a mountain split by the thunderbolt. (74.38) Then those two bulls among men, harsh in battle, seizing the elephant's limbs, slew also the elephant's foot-guards. Having killed them, the two entered the middle of the arena, like the Nāsatyas, the two Aśvins, descended from heaven at will. The Vṛṣṇis, Andhakas and Bhojas beheld the two wearers of forest-garlands. With hissings and shouts and cries, with the slapping of their arms, with lion-roars and hand-claps, they made the people rejoice. But the king of the Bhojas, seeing the two, sank into despair, his purpose frustrated, observing the affection and the joy of the citizens, O Bhārata. Having slain that roaring best of tuskers, the lotus-eyed one, together with his elder brother, went down into the assembly that had the form of an ocean. (74.39) A thunderbolt to the wrestlers, the best of men to men, Love embodied to the women, their own kinsman to the cowherds, the chastiser of wicked kings, a child to his own parents, death to the lord of the Bhojas, the cosmic form to the ignorant, the supreme reality to the yogins, the highest deity to the Vṛṣṇis — thus was Hari known as he entered the arena. And all the gods and sages, having bowed to the mace-bearer, seated in their aerial cars, then fixed their gaze to watch the fight. Then great-armed Kṛṣṇa, joined with Baladeva, honoring the people in his mind, was ready to kill Kaṃsa. (They saw) lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa, his garment tossed by the wind, entering swiftly, having placed his elder brother in front —

The son of Ugrasena, seeing Kṛṣṇa with the elephant's tusk raised as a weapon, his own face much strained, looked upon him with fury. (75.4) And all those seated in the arena too gazed with unblinking eyes upon the lotus-eyed one, with joy in their inmost selves. Keśava shone with the elephant's tusk held against his arm, like a mountain with a single peak conjoined with the orb of the half-moon.

As Govinda leapt about, that whole ocean of an arena appeared as if being filled by the answering roar of the throngs of people. (75.6) Then Kaṃsa, his eyes coppery-red with anger, exceedingly wrathful, appointed the very mighty Cāṇūra to the fight with Kṛṣṇa; and in his anger he assigned to Baladeva the Andhra wrestler, the crafty Muṣṭika of great strength, who was like a mass of mountains. And Cāṇūra had indeed already been commanded by Kaṃsa beforehand: "You must fight with Kṛṣṇa, and with full effort."

And Cāṇūra, his eyes made reddish-brown with rage, advanced to fight, like a cloud full of water. And he said to Govinda: "I shall take away your arrogance; before long, cowherd, you will see Vaivasvata (Yama) by my strength." On hearing just that, Govinda said to him whose life was already gone: "Such is your capacity — I shall see (your) supreme strength; before long, wrestler, you will see (it), whether by you or by me, base one. Show your strength, if you are able, (that strength) by which you are talked of, base one." Having spoken thus, Govinda roared loudly in many ways. When the assembly had shouted and the people had fallen silent and still, the Yādavas gathered there spoke these words: "...abandoning ... and having viewed the contest with conciliation — this arm-combat in the arena, with umpires, undaunted, recognised (as decided) by skill and strength, was of old established as weaponless."
