HV 71.1

And they, all of them of immeasurable vigour, having yoked the finest chariot, arrived together with Kṛṣṇa and with Saṃkarṣaṇa; (the chariot) approached the delightful city Mathurā, guarded by Kaṃsa, and they entered that foremost of cities at the hour when the sun was red.

For on your account that aged man is being cast out by Kaṃsa and is reviled by day and by night; and (he says) one must not stay here. Therefore you two should do what brings the highest happiness for your father's sake; whatever is joined with his welfare, so that he may obtain happiness, that indeed must be done. Without you two I will not enter the city of Mathurā. You ought not to abandon me, O Lord, your devotee, you who are fond of your devotees. Come, let us go to our houses; make them possessed of a master, O Adhokṣaja. Purify with the dust of your feet our houses, ours who are householders, by the purity of which the ancestors, and the gods together with the fires, are satisfied. The waters from the washing of your feet, being pure, purified the three worlds; those (waters) which Śarva himself bore upon his head, those which Sagara's sons (obtained). O God of gods, Lord of the world, whose hearing and praise are meritorious, O most praised of the Yadus, O Nārāyaṇa, homage be to you." Then Kṛṣṇa said to him: "We two shall go unnoticed, viewing Mathurā, O hero, and the royal highway, O righteous one. But, good man, let us go to his very house, if you think it right." Thus addressed by the Blessed One, that Akrūra, as though dispirited, entered the city, reported his task to Kaṃsa, and went to his house. And Akrūra too, having bowed in his mind to the imperishable Viṣṇu, went to Kaṃsa's side with a delighted inner self. And those two gods, lords of the world, named Bala and Keśava, those two heroes, having been instructed, set out, both of them sightseers, like two elephants released from their tethering posts and eager for a fight. And boys followed their path on all sides. And the two, seeing a washerman, a dyer, going along the road, then asked him for those clothes that were free of dirt.

Wailing over him who had been slain, his wives cried out and quickly, with their hair loosened, went to Kaṃsa's residence. And Kṛṣṇa and Balabhadra, taking clothes from everywhere, the two great-minded ones first put them on and shone with them. Then, having given the very smooth and soft ones to the boys, all those hundreds too, well clothed, shone accordingly. But the remaining clothes, very many though they were, Kṛṣṇa then tore and tore again all at once, and cut and crushed them, and reduced that washerman's dwelling to ashes. And those two, both well clothed, went on for the sake of garlands—having shown (their clothes?) as was fitting and as was fit for use—to the row of the garland-sellers' shops, like two elephants that have caught a scent.

"These two are yakṣas"—so then that man who lived by garlands thought; deeply shaken with fear, he made no reply. Even today his line is a powerful one, rich in jewels, ever famous and strong, made so then by Keśava. Viṣṇu's very great favour always protected his lineage. But those two sons of Vasudeva, both going along the royal highway, saw further on a hunchbacked woman carrying a vessel of ointment.

(29) Then Kṛṣṇa and Balabhadra, taking that ointment, anointed their limbs with the auspicious and sweetly fragrant (paste). Then Viṣṇu, with a garland bound of many flowers — Govinda, the lord of cows, Kṛṣṇa — shone with a crest-wreath made (of it); and mighty Saṃkarṣaṇa shone with his ample garland. Both of them, their limbs anointed and their bodies moist, shone like two bulls gone to a ford in the Yamunā with their bodies smeared with mud. (30) And all the boys likewise shone, wearing crests, adorning even what was misshapen, by the power of the wielder of the Śārṅga bow. Then Kṛṣṇa, who knew the arrangement of sport, slowly lifted that hunchbacked woman up with two fingers of his hand's tip.

Then, taking it up, the valorous Kṛṣṇa, lotus-petal-eyed, hefted it with his two arms, with an inwardly delighted heart.

Being bent by Kṛṣṇa with force, that snake-like bow adorned as the sacrificial emblem became two in the middle. (43) The sound of the breaking bow filled the sky, heaven and earth, and the directions; hearing it, Kaṃsa fell into terror. Its guards, with their attendants, enraged and murderous, wanting to seize (them), surrounded (them, crying) "Seize him! Kill him!" Then Bala and Keśava, seeing them of evil intent, angry, took up the fragments of the bow and struck them down. And having killed the force sent by Kaṃsa, they went out from the mouth of the hall and roamed proudly, surveying the riches of the city. The city-dwellers, observing that marvelous valor of theirs, and their splendor and bold form, thought them to be two supreme gods. Having broken that best of bows, Kṛṣṇa, swift in prowess, came forth with great speed, and so did young Saṃkarṣaṇa.

Then the two were pursued by the guards when the bow was broken; by the sound of the bow's breaking, which made a roar like the wind, the whole inner palace shook and the directions were filled. (45) Going out from the armory, they went into the presence of the cowherds. But the keeper of the arms, going in haste with a bewildered mind — that man of the armory, frightened, swift in movement, having come near the king, spoke, panting like a crow.

"Two men, together, belonging to who knows whom, with their hair spread out in a topknot, wearing dark and yellow garments, with yellow and white unguents — (48) those two, unrecognized, entered the inner apartments, moving with the speed of desire, heroes resembling sons of the gods, like two fires though boys; the two comely ones stood in the bow-house, as if come suddenly from the sky. The comely bulls among men had come, intent on the festival; I saw them plainly, with their lovely garments and garlands."

But as it was being drawn by that strong-armed one, that arrowless (bow) creaked at the grip and, having become two, snapped. // (71.52) Then the earth shook and the sun did not shine; with the sound of the bow's breaking the vault of heaven seemed to spin. Seeing that marvel I fell into the utmost astonishment; out of fear of those enemies who inspire fear I have come here to report it. I do not know, great king, who those two of measureless valour are: one resembles Kailāsa, one has the sheen of a mountain of collyrium. And he, having broken that other jewel (of a bow) as an elephant breaks a post, rushed out with the speed of the wind, that one of measureless valour, with his follower; having made it into two he went away — I do not know at all who he was, O king.
