etaṃ kadambam āruhya tad eṣa śiśulīlayā vinipatya hrade ghore damayiṣyāmi kāliyam // HV_55.57 evaṃ kṛte bāhuvīryaṃ loke khyātiṃ gamiṣyati | mama jpādatalasparśād dīrghajīvī bhaved ayam | kadambaḥ puṣpaphalavān samārādhyaś ca matpriyaiḥ || so 'yaṃ kadambaśikharaḥ sarvaprāṇisukhāvahaḥ | adyāpi bhrājate viṣṇoḥ pādasaṃsparśaśobhayā | sopasṛtya nadītīraṃ baddhvā parikaraṃ dṛḍham ārohac capalaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kadambaśikharaṃ yuvā

So, climbing this kadamba tree, falling from it into the terrible pool in a boy's play, I shall subdue Kāliya. When this is done, the strength of my arms will win fame in the world. And by the touch of the sole of my foot this kadamba will become long-lived, bearing flowers and fruit, and worshipped by those dear to me." That very kadamba-top, bringing happiness to all living beings, shines even today with the beauty of the touch of Viṣṇu's foot. Approaching the river bank and binding his garment firmly about him, the nimble young Kṛṣṇa climbed to the top of the kadamba.

Kṛṣṇa, hanging from the top of the kadamba, cloud-shaped, lotus-eyed, made a sound in the middle of the pool as he fell; dark as the petal of a blue lotus, he fell into that pool. Stirred by Kṛṣṇa falling into it, that great pool was violently splashed out, as though the ocean were being split apart.

Those serpent lords bit Kṛṣṇa with sharp fangs muddied with the fluid oozing out of their venom, yet the mighty one did not die. // Though bitten by the fangs, Keśava did not stir; Kṛṣṇa moved about for a long time in Kāliya's pool. Meanwhile all the cowherds, terrified, went crying to the settlement with voices choked by tears:

Homage to you, O Brahmā-Rudra-Indra, saluted by gods and demons; I have come to you for refuge — let my life be granted me. Therefore ordain what task is to be done by me, O lord." Having spoken thus, he honoured Kṛṣṇa's feet with his heads.
