There, where the lady Rohiṇī was, who brought joy to Vasudeva, there he secretly settled Kṛṣṇa, who had the splendour of the infant sun. (49.30) And Garga of great austerity, employed by Vasudeva, performed for the two of them all the rites beginning with the birth-ceremony, in due order; having given wealth to the brahmins and food as well, in due order, the cowherds too held a festival for the cows and for the brahmins. There a very long time passed for him as he dwelt in the cow-station of Nanda the cowherd, doing the work of a herdsman. (50.1) And Garga, urged on by Vasudeva, there in the cowherd clan performed the sacraments for the two, secretly, among the cowherds. The two boys, once named, grew up happily: the elder was named Saṃkarṣaṇa, and the younger was Kṛṣṇa.

Kṛṣṇa was dark as a cloud — Hari, who had entered another body — and he grew up among the cows like a rain-cloud over the ocean. (50.3) Now I shall relate at length the great deeds of the boy; be attentive and hear, O king, what you wish. There, taking his stand in yoga, he slew the Dānavas, so it is said. A certain valiant son of Danu, wishing to kill Kṛṣṇa, took on the form of a cart and gained a place of favour with Nanda. Once, when (Kṛṣṇa) lay asleep beneath the cart, Yaśodā, eager (in her love) for her son, left him there and went to the river Yamunā.

Then, playing the play of an infant, throwing about his own hands and feet, putting his big toe into his mouth and kicking with both feet, the infant Kṛṣṇa, laughing and rolling his eyes about, pressing hand with hand and foot with foot — with his many sports Viṣṇu was washing away the sin of the worlds whose minds were fixed on him, of those whose thoughts clung to him — Kṛṣṇa cried sweetly, stretching his feet upward.

While the two of them were talking thus, the children there said: "This vehicle was knocked over by this infant with his foot; we saw it by chance as we were running up together." (50.18) But Nandagopa, hearing that, fell into the greatest astonishment, both delighted and afraid, wondering "What is this?" And the cowherds did not believe it, all of them having human understanding; all of them, their eyes wide open with amazement, saying "A marvel!", had the cart set in its own place and its wheels fastened. (50.19) Nanda, lifting him onto his lap and taking up dust of the earth, making his head (go) rightward (in circumambulation), muttered this spell: "May Viṣṇu guard you on the east, may Rudra protect the south, may Brahmā guard the west, and may Skanda protect the north; so too may the Sun guard above and Vāsuki below; and, child, may the Wind guard you in the remaining quarters. May the blessed Pinākin, whose banner is the bull, make you well; may the cows protect you everywhere; may the earth, ever-auspicious, guard you." Having uttered this, Nanda touched Kṛṣṇa all over. That same spell is declared to be for the protection of children. Then after some time, one who took the guise of a bird, the nurse of Kaṃsa the Bhoja, well known as Pūtanā — a great bird named Pūtanā, terrifying to life — came at midnight, shaking her wings in anger. Then, taking the infant into her dreadful lap, she gave him her breast, monstrous and of hardly digestible potency; and the Lord, pressing it hard with both hands, filled with rage, drank it along with her life-breaths. She, crying out "Let go, let go of the child!", as every vital point of her life was being crushed, with eyes staring wide, again and again (flinging) her feet and arms, her body drenched, thrashing about, wailed. At the sound of her, of exceedingly deep force, the earth with its mountains and the sky with its planets shook; the netherworld and the quarters resounded; people fell to the ground in the fear that a thunderbolt had struck. Thus the night-wanderer, her breast wracked, lifeless, spreading out her hair and stretching out her feet and arms too, took on her own form in the cow-pen and fell, O king, like Vṛtra struck by the thunderbolt. Even as it fell, her body pulverized the trees within a space of three gavyūtis, O lord of kings; that was a great marvel. Her mouth had fierce tusks the size of cart-poles, her nostrils were mountain caverns, her breasts boulders, dreadful, her tawny hair scattered, her eyes deep as blind wells, terrifying with buttock-slopes like sandbanks, her arms and thighs and legs like built-up causeways, her belly a lake emptied of water — and the child, playing on her breast, fearing nothing from any side: the cowherd women, hurrying up at once, seized him in great agitation. Together with Yaśodā and Rohiṇī, they duly performed protection for the child on all sides, by whirling a cow's tail about him and so forth. Having bathed the little one in cow's urine, and again with cow-dust, they made a protection with cow-dung on his twelve limbs, with the (holy) names. Then, at the hour of midnight, a bird appeared.

And there in the night, when the people were asleep, she gave her breast to Kṛṣṇa; Kṛṣṇa sucked her breast along with her life-breaths, and she screamed. (50.22) That breast-milk, mingled with poison, was sweet to the Guru of the world. Seeing that bird falling, undone by fear, in her flight swift and unsteady and shrieking discordantly, Kṛṣṇa with his big toe made her overpowered by the wheel; overpowered by the wheel the bird fell and died. And Hari roared a great roar again and again. Terrified by that sound, the people then woke up — Nandagopa and the cowherds and Yaśodā, greatly distressed.
