Harivamsha — Chapter 48

HV 48.1

evaṃ tu tāṃ samādiśya gato 'ntardhānam īśvaraḥ sā cāpi taṃ namaskṛtya tathāstv iti vinirgatā // HV_47.57 yaś caitat paṭhate stotraṃ śṛṇuyād vāpy abhīkṣṇaśaḥ | sarvārthasiddhiṃ labhate naro nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ | kṛte garbhavidhāne tu devakī devatopamā jagrāha sapta tān garbhān yathāvat samudāhṛtān

Having thus instructed her, the Lord vanished; and she too, having bowed to him and said 'let it be so', went forth. (47.57) And whoever recites this hymn, or hears it constantly, that man attains the accomplishment of all his aims — there is no doubt in this. And when the arrangement of the conception had been made, Devakī, like a goddess, received those seven embryos, just as they had been designated.

tām āha nidrā saṃvignāṃ naiśe tamasi rohiṇīm rohiṇīm iva somasya vasudevasya rohiṇīm

To her, Rohiṇī, agitated in the darkness of the night — to Vasudeva's Rohiṇī, like Soma's Rohiṇī — Nidrā (Sleep) said:

His guards guarded that embryo with care, all of them watchful, diligent, bearing weapons, counting off the months. There Hari dwells in that womb-dwelling by his own will. (48.9) On the very day when Devakī conceived the lord of gods as her embryo, on that same day Yaśodā too conceived as her embryo Nidrā (Sleep), born of Viṣṇu's body, the executrix of Viṣṇu's command.

For Yaśodā and Devakī were pregnant at the same time. On the eighth day, in the month of Śrāvaṇa, in the dark fortnight, on that great lunar day, under (the asterism) Rohiṇī, at midnight, at the rising of the moon, Devakī gave birth to Viṣṇu, and Yaśodā to that girl — when the Abhijit hour had come, at the adorned midnight.

Auspicious winds blew forth, the dust grew still, and the lights shone out, as Janārdana was being born. // The constellation was named Abhijit, the night was named Jayantī, the hour was named Vijaya, in which Janārdana was born. The unmanifest, eternal, subtle Hari-Nārāyaṇa, the Lord — the Blessed One is born there, bewildering the world with his eyes. Unstruck kettledrums of the gods sounded in heaven, and the lord of the third heaven rained a rain of flowers from the sky. // All the sages of stern vows, having become invisible, praised in the night the Lord of gods, Janārdana, as he was being born: "This very one, the master of the world, in Vasudeva's house, having taken on the body of a child, sits silent — now look! Look upon him with full trust, the lord of the worlds in person, the Master, who, having taken on a human body, hangs on Devakī's arm. He will appear in order to slay the evil-souled Kaṃsa. Homage to him, the world's sustainer, to Viṣṇu in the form of Kṛṣṇa; to him of inconceivable power, the maker of the universe, homage and homage again." Praising Madhusūdana with words full of blessing, with fitting words thus (praising) him, Janārdana as he was being born, the great seers together with the gandharvas and the apsarases attended upon him. // When Hṛṣīkeśa was born the world became joyful, and Indra together with the thirty gods praised Madhusūdana. But Vasudeva, seeing that son born in the night, Adhokṣaja, bearing the śrīvatsa mark and endowed with divine marks — and then Devakī, in distress, of pure smile, said to him: "Withdraw this divine form entirely, O Hari. Let this Kaṃsa, destroyer of Diti's sons, not know of your descent." Vasudeva said to him: "Withdraw the form, O Lord; I am afraid of Kaṃsa, O god, and therefore I speak thus; my sons, your elder brothers, were slain by him, O lotus-eyed one." Hearing Vasudeva's words Acyuta withdrew the form. "Having given leave by (your) fatherhood, carry (me) to the house of Nanda the cowherd"; abiding by Ugrasena's counsel, he then gave (her) to Yaśodā. At such a confused hour the guards then fell asleep. Not only were the guards with their weapons deluded; that whole city of Mathurā slept through Hari's māyā, except only Vasudeva and Devakī, O lord of the earth. Then Vasudeva, going to that birth-chamber of Devakī, saw the God of gods, Adhokṣaja, born in the night: with dark curling locks, his face a lotus in full bloom, like a dark cloud, lovely, a mass of splendour, more than human, lying upon a lotus leaf as formerly upon a banyan leaf — Kṛṣṇa with his head to the east and his feet laid to the west. No afterbirth was seen there, nor any pain of delivery. Devakī of fair face, seated, gazing at her son, beholding him, was filled with utter amazement, together with Vasudeva. But Vasudeva, quickly taking up the child that lay in Devakī's lap, the Yādava, in fear and fond of his son, entered by night the house of Yaśodā. // While the doorkeepers and townsmen, all their faculties of awareness taken away by her (māyā), lay asleep, the doors, all shut and hard to pass, with their great panels, iron bolts and chains — these, when Vasudeva came bearing Kṛṣṇa, burst apart of themselves, as darkness does before the sun. Parjanya rained with muffled thunder, and Śeṣa followed behind, warding off the water with his hoods. As Magha rained excessively again and again, the younger sister of Yama (the Yamunā), foaming with waves swift with deep floods of water, that river troubled with a hundred fearful whirlpools, gave way — as the ocean did to the lord of Śrī. Coming to Nanda's cattle-station, Śauri found the cowherds there fast asleep in slumber, laid his son on Yaśodā's bed, and taking up her daughter went back home again. Having set down the boy there unknown to Yaśodā, and having taken that girl too, he laid her on Devakī's bed. // All the guards were then still asleep through Viṣṇu's māyā; the exchange of the two infants having been made, Vasudeva, shaken with fear, his purpose accomplished, went out from the dwelling. // The city gates, outer and inner, were all shut as before. Then, hearing the sound of the child, the house-guards rose up. They, going quickly, announced that birth from Devakī's womb to the Bhoja king, who was waiting for it in agitation; then Ānakadundubhi announced to Kaṃsa, Ugrasena's son, that girl of fair complexion. // In fear he announced, "A girl has been born to us"; and hearing that, Kaṃsa in haste, hurrying with his guards, the valiant one, came to the door of Vasudeva's house.

And casting off the infant body, suddenly, with her hair loosed, she went and entered the sky, with divine garlands and unguents, all her limbs shining with necklaces, adorned with a blazing diadem; and she became forever a maiden, divine, praised by the gods.

Having spoken this terrible speech, the goddess with her troop roamed by a path at will through the sky to the dwelling of the gods. // That girl grew up here in the house of the Vṛṣṇis, honoured, reared like a son, that goddess, then by the command of the gods. And know her to be the goddess born from a portion of Prajāpati, Ekānaṃśā, the maiden of yoga, for the protection of Keśava. All the Yādavas with glad hearts honour her, she by whom Kṛṣṇa of divine body was guarded as a god is guarded, she whom men on earth call Ekānaṃśā, born (in that way). When she had gone, Kaṃsa considered her to be his own death, and in private, ashamed, he spoke in reply to Devakī.

Time alone is the enemy of men, and time is what brings change; time carries everything away, and one like me is only its instrument. // Calamities will come, O lady, each according to its share. But this is the misery — that a creature thinks, "I am the doer." Do not grieve for your sons; give up the lamenting born of sorrow. Such, for the most part, is the birth of men; there is no fixity in time.
