At that deed of the Daitya Viṣṇu was filled with amazement; the bird, struck by him, reeled again and again, (but) his strength being increased by Hari he did not fall into a swoon, (he) upon whose head, Suparṇa's, that mace had fallen. // Then the bird, his body pained, came down with his foot to the earth. Then with clods and with hurled(?) rocks and with thunderbolt-blows they struck Viṣṇu in the battle, and the cowherd in the great fight; and as he whirled and staggered the gods made praise: "Victory, O god of mighty arms, destroyer of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, you who tore open Hiraṇyakaśipu's chest with the plough of your nails!" And Viṣṇu, praised by the immortals as of old, rose up from the battle. Thinking Viṣṇu slain, that Dānava blew his conch, and the great Asuras there, sounding drums in three (rhythms) and keeping the beat, danced, and it looked like a great festival. Seeing Suparṇa in pain and his own body wounded, Vaikuṇṭha, his eyes red with anger, took up his discus.
