HV 14.1

āsan pūrvayuge tāta bharadvājātmajā dvijāḥ yogadharmam anuprāpya bhraṣṭā duścaritena vai

HV 14.2

apabhraṃśam anuprāptā yogadharmāpacāriṇaḥ mahatas tamasaḥ pāre mānasasya visaṃjñitāḥ

Transgressors against the discipline of yoga, they came to a fall, (and were left) senseless beyond a great darkness of the mind.

HV 14.3

tam evārtham anudhyānto naṣṭam apsv iva mohitāḥ aprāpya yogaṃ te sarve saṃyuktāḥ kāladharmaṇā

Brooding upon that very object, bewildered, (which was) lost as though in water, all of them, not having attained yoga, met with the law of time (i.e. died).

HV 14.4

tatas te yogavibhraṣṭā deveṣu suciroṣitāḥ jātāḥ kauśikadāyādāḥ kurukṣetre nararṣabha

Then those who had fallen from yoga, after dwelling long among the gods, were born as descendants of Kauśika in Kurukṣetra, O bull among men.

HV 14.5

hiṃsayā vicariṣyanto dharmaṃ pitṛkṛtena vai tatas te punar ājātiṃ bhraṣṭāḥ prāpsyanti kutsitāṃ

Going about (transgressing) dharma by violence, on account of what their father did, those fallen ones will then again attain a despicable birth.

HV 14.6

teṣāṃ pitṛprasādena pūrvajātikṛtena ca smṛtir utpatsyate prāpya tāṃ tāṃ jātiṃ jugupsitām

By their father's grace, and by what was done in a former birth, memory will arise in them upon reaching each of those loathsome births.

te dharmacāriṇo nityaṃ bhaviṣyanti samāhitāḥ brāhmaṇyaṃ pratilapsyanti tato bhūyaḥ svakarmaṇā

They will constantly be practisers of dharma, composed; and then again, by their own action, they will regain brahminhood.

HV 14.8

tataś ca yogaṃ prāpsyanti pūrvajātikṛtaṃ punaḥ bhūyaḥ siddhim anuprāptāḥ sthānaṃ prāpsyanti śāśvatam

And thereafter they will again attain the yoga practised in a former birth; having once more reached perfection, they will attain the eternal station.

Thus your mind too will turn again and again to dharma, and, devoted to the discipline of yoga, you will attain the highest perfection. // (14.9) For yoga is always hard to get, never (attainable) by those of little wisdom; and even when they have got it they destroy it by their vices, being embittered [text uncertain]. They move only among unrighteous things and always vex their teacher. (But such men as) do not beg what ought not to be begged, who protect those who come for shelter, who do not despise the wretched, who are not intoxicated by the fever of wealth, who are measured in food and recreation and measured in their exertions in their own duties, who are given to meditation and study and do not go chasing after what is lost; who are not constantly given to enjoyments, not eaters of meat and honey, not always making pleasure their highest aim, nor likewise servers of (other) brahmins; who are not attached to ignoble talk, nor struck down by sloth, nor excessively attached to pride, nor given to gossip-circles — (such) men attain yoga; yoga is indeed hard to obtain on earth. Those who are tranquil, who have conquered anger, free of pride and egotism, of restrained vows — they become vessels of good fortune. Of just such a kind, my dear, were those brahmins then; for they remember their own fault, committed through heedlessness. Given to meditation and study, established on the path of peace, they swiftly obtain supreme peace — here there is no doubt. Therefore you too, knower of dharma, be intent on the discipline of yoga; for than the discipline of yoga, O knower of dharma, there is no dharma more excellent. Practise it, the best of all dharmas, O Bhārgava.

HV 14.11

kālasya pariṇāmena laghvāhāro jitendriyaḥ tatparaḥ prayataḥ śrāddhī yogadharmam avāpsyasi ity uktvā bhagavān devas tatraivāntaradhīyata

With the turning of time, eating lightly, with senses conquered, intent on that, restrained, and faithful, you will attain the discipline of yoga.' Having said this, the blessed god vanished on that very spot.

aṣṭādaśānāṃ varṣāṇām ekāham iti me matiḥ upāsataś ca deveśaṃ varṣāṇy aṣṭādaśaiva me

Of eighteen years — in my mind it was a single day; for I attended upon the lord of gods for a full eighteen years.

HV 14.13

By the grace of that god there was then no weariness, nor hunger and thirst; nor did I know the time then, O sinless one. Afterwards the time was made known to me from my pupils.
