"(Sons) of Virāj, O best of the twice-born, they are known as the Vairājas; hosts of gods worship them with rites prescribed by the ordinance. [13.8] Swift as thought, feeding on the svadhā offering, endowed with all that they desire, these great-souled ones have come to be by abandoning yoga. Fallen from yoga, having reached the eternal worlds, at the end of a thousand ages they are born again as expounders of Brahman."

Practising austerity exceedingly great and hard to perform even for gods and dānavas, those three scorched the worlds, the standing and the moving. [13.16] Ekaparṇā (took her stand upon) a nyagrodha tree, and Ekapāṭalā a pāṭala tree; those two lived dependent (on trees), but Aparṇā practised austerity without any abode. For ten thousand years she practised what is hard for gods and dānavas; Ekaparṇā managed her food with a single leaf, and Ekapāṭalā made do with a single pāṭalā flower. [13.17] When a full thousand was complete, two of them took food; one there was without food, and her mother tried to hold her back, forbidding her with the words "u mā" ("O, do not!"), pained by a mother's affection.

Being addressed thus by that mother, the goddess of hard practice came to be renowned as Umā, the beautiful one, in the three worlds. [13.19] By that very name she is famed here, she who is devoted to the dharma of yoga. This world of the three maidens, O Bhārgava, will endure — burnt by their austerity — as long as the earth shall hold. All those three had bodies made of austerity and were endowed with the power of yoga; all of them greatly blessed, all of unfading youth; they are mothers of the world and chaste students; all of them speakers of brahman, and all of them with their seed drawn upward.

Umā, the foremost and eldest of them, of excellent complexion, endowed with great yogic power, attended upon Mahādeva. [13.21] Her son was Dattaka Uśanas, the delight of Bhṛgu's line. But Ekaparṇā was given as wife, O great brahman, to the great-souled Devala son of Asita, the wise teacher of yoga. [13.22] The third of those maidens, Ekapāṭalā, (was) their nourishment(?); she attended upon Jaigīṣavya, the son of Śataśalāka. Of him too two sons, Śaṅkha and Likhita, are recorded, not born from a womb. Know that Ekapāṭalā belonged thus to Jaigīṣavya; and these two, O greatly blessed one, attended upon two teachers of yoga.

There are worlds named Somapada, where the sons of Marīci, the Fathers, abide in heaven; and the gods indeed sustain them. They are known as the Agniṣvāttas, all of them of measureless energy. [13.24] The Fathers there heard of as Agniṣvāttas are widely renowned. Their mind-born daughter is the river named Acchodā; from her arose that divine lake named Acchoda. [13.25] But those Fathers had never before been seen by her; then she of pure smile saw the Fathers, although they were bodiless. Born from their mind, she did not recognize her own Fathers; and the fair-complexioned one became ashamed through that distress. Seeing (them), she chose as father Vasu who moves in the sky, known by the name Vasu, the glorious son of Āyu, [13.26] who was joined with the apsaras Adrikā and seated in a celestial car in the sky. By that transgression of her mind, acting as she pleased out of desire, having sought another as father, she fell, fallen from yoga.

Falling, cast down from heaven, she saw three celestial cars of the size of a speck of dust; in them she saw those Fathers. [13.28] As she fell she saw the three cars close by; there she saw her own Fathers, of the size of specks of dust, very subtle, indistinct, like fires set within fires. "Save me!" she said in her distress, falling head-downward.
