Then, the moment they saw Garuḍa, (the snakes) that had gone into Aniruddha's body... Thus, having obtained many boons, Bāṇa became glad; he went with Rudra, having attained the state of Mahākāla. Vāsudeva too questioned Nārada again and again: "Where is Aniruddha, revered one, bound with fetters of serpents? I wish to hear the truth, for my mind is melting with affection. With the hero Aniruddha carried off, the city of Dvārakā is in turmoil; I shall quickly free him — that is the purpose for which we have come. Today we wish to see him, his enemies destroyed; the place, O blessed one of good vows, is known to you." Thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, Nārada replied: "That youth is bound with serpents in the maidens' quarters, Mādhava." At that very moment Citralekhā quickly presented herself: "This is the inner apartment of Bāṇa, the great-souled lord of the Daityas of highest being; enter, O god, at your ease." Then they all entered, to release Aniruddha: Bala, Suparṇa, Kṛṣṇa, Pradyumna and Nārada; Vāsudeva too at once entered the inner quarters of the foe. Great serpents in the form of arrows lay coiled about his body.

"Mount Garuḍa quickly; let us go to the city of Dvārakā." So addressed, he mounted, together with the Dānava maiden. (5) Then, permitted by their elders, they set out, (Aniruddha) joined with Citralekhā, who was ever dear to him. Then those bulls among men travelled the long road. The discus-armed one, taking up Aniruddha... he made Bāṇa, whose discus was raised, one to be slain; having cut off the circle of Bāṇa's arms, the discus-armed one, taking up Aniruddha — before him great Bāṇa with raised discus — when he had been felled, his body shattered of arms, they all mounted Garuḍa, having conquered Bāṇa the great Asura.

Then, standing in the vault of the sky, having taken to the western quarter, those great-souled ones saw cows that yielded divine milk, roaming the groves of the shore, of many colours, by the thousand. (7) Recognising then their form from having heard Kumbhāṇḍa's words, Kṛṣṇa, best of strikers, truly skilled in matters, and learning that they were Bāṇa's cows, then set his mind on them. Seated on Garuḍa, the god, imperishable origin of all worlds, (said): (8) "Garuḍa, go there where Bāṇa's cattle-wealth is, by drinking whose milk one is said to attain immortality. And Satyabhāmā said to me: 'Bring me Bāṇa's cows, by drinking whose milk the great Asuras do not decay, (9) and creatures, casting off old age, are said to become free of aging. Bring them to me — blessings on you — if the task be not spoiled; but if there be an obstruction to the task, then do not set your mind on them.' (10) So Satyā said to me, and here they are, known to me. These cows are seen; but on seeing me they all enter together the abode of Varuṇa. Let what is to be done here be arranged."

Saying "so be it," Garuḍa, (parting) the ocean with the wind of his wings, plunged suddenly close to Varuṇa's abode. (12) Seeing Garuḍa arrived with speed at Varuṇa's abode, all Varuṇa's hosts, bewildered, then stirred. Then Varuṇa's most terrible army advanced before Vāsudeva, raising manifold weapons. (13) That battle between Varuṇa's folk and the enemy of serpents was dreadful. Then, before that wise Vāsudeva, as those Vāruṇas fell upon him in battle by the thousands, their bodies lit up the whole abode of Varuṇa. With his discus the blessed Śauri wrought great slaughter; the unassailable force was broken by great-souled Keśava. Broken, they fled at once to that very abode of Varuṇa.

Sixty thousand chariots and sixty hundred chariots were deployed by Varuṇa in the battle, with blazing weapons. (15) They fought with Kṛṣṇa, with Pradyumna and with Bala; all of them Hari slew at once in the fight. That force, burning on all sides under the floods of Kṛṣṇa's arrows, broken, though it took refuge with Varuṇa, found no standing-place. (16) That force was slain on every side, by the mighty heroes Baladeva and Janārdana, by Pradyumna, by Aniruddha and by Garuḍa, with floods of various sharp arrows. Then, seeing the army broken by Kṛṣṇa of untiring deeds, Varuṇa, enraged, marched out to where Keśava was; hymned in many ways by seers, gods and Gandharvas and by the hosts of Apsarases, Varuṇa took his stand.

"Knowing the higher and the lower, all-knowing, established in the ordinance of lordship — why do you bewilder us all, like the Lord of creatures himself?" // 113.40 Thus addressed by Varuṇa, Kṛṣṇa, the refuge of the world, knower of intentions, the all-knowing hero, then became glad at heart. So addressed, laughing, Kṛṣṇa spoke these words: "Hand over the cows to me, O god, for the sake of peace, O you of terrible valour." // 113.41 Thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, Varuṇa, skilled in speech, spoke again: "Hear me, O slayer of Madhu. A compact was made by me with Bāṇa long ago, O god; and having made a compact, how should I render it fruitless otherwise? // 113.42 You yourself, O god, (are the standard) for all, as (regards) a breaker of compacts; conduct is defiled, dear one, and is not praised by the good. The lord who shares in dharma always avoids (it), O slayer of Madhu; and the wicked breaker of compacts does not attain the (higher) worlds. Be gracious, and let there be no lapse of dharma for me, O slayer of Madhu; you should not join me to the breaking of a compact, O Mādhava. Living, I shall not give up the cows, O bull-eyed one; kill me and take the cows — this is the compact I have made. // 113.43 And this compact of mine has been declared to you, O slayer of Madhu; it is truth indeed, O mighty-armed one, not falsehood, O lord of gods. If then I am to be favoured, protect me, O slayer of Madhu; or else, if you are insistent about the cows, kill me and take them, O great-armed one. I honour you as one who knows dharma; you are dear to me. Because you speak the truth, you are (thereby) imbued with my own nature." Thus informed by him, Kṛṣṇa, conqueror of enemy cities, having caused the whole account of Bāṇa to be heard... Putting Bāṇa the asura in front, the wealth of cattle was given to Kṛṣṇa; and Hari, having taken it from Varuṇa, went to Dvāravatī. Kṛṣṇa the glorious, borne by Garuḍa, approached Dvārakā, and dwelt there together with the Vṛṣṇis, praised by those assembled. This account concerning Bāṇa has been told to you, O Janamejaya; since you ask, O king, what more do you wish to hear? Thus addressed by Varuṇa, the greatly renowned one released the cows. So addressed, the greatly renowned one, releasing Bāṇa's cows, and holding the compact to be unbreakable, gave up his claim regarding the cows; laughing, Mādhava honoured the god Varuṇa. Then, laughing, he who was skilled in meaning uttered these words; honouring Varuṇa, the god released Bāṇa's cows: "Therefore you are released, since such a compact was made with Bāṇa" — with flowing, sweet words that expressed the true meaning: "How shall I do a wrong to you, Varuṇa, O lord? Go, you are released, Varuṇa; be true to your word for us. For your pleasure the cows of Bāṇa have been released by me, no doubt." Then, with the sounds of trumpets and the great noise of kettledrums, Varuṇa, taking the guest-offering, honoured Keśava in return. Keśava, the delight of the Yadus, then receiving the offering from Varuṇa, the god honoured (Varuṇa's) strength, well and attentively. Having given safety to Varuṇa, the majestic Vāsudeva (said): "For your sake the cows of the evil-souled Bāṇa are released." Having said this to Varuṇa, the god released Bāṇa's cows, and set out for Dvārakā, surrounded by Śakra and the other immortals. // 113.44 The god set out for Dvārakā with the husband of Śacī as companion; there the gods with the Maruts and the Sādhyas, O conqueror in battle, and Gandharvas and Apsarases, and Kiṃnaras moving in the sky, and the sages headed by Nārada, Vasiṣṭha and the rest, rich in austerity, follow the Lord of all, the beginning of all beings, the imperishable one.

Then, embracing again Kṛṣṇa, whom the world salutes — having said this to all the Yādavas and having worshipped Kṛṣṇa, Vāsava, the Breaker of Cities, went to heaven, surrounded by all the hosts of immortals; and the great-souled seers, (blessing) that greatly vigorous one with benedictions of victory, went back as they had come, as did the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas and Kinnaras. When the Breaker of Cities had gone to heaven, the lotus-navelled, greatly strong, greatly blessed one asked after the unfailing welfare of all. Then, uttering shouts of jubilation by the thousand, they go to see the moonlight; and he, the faultless one, with his beloved — Kṛṣṇa, having reached Dvārakā, took his pleasure surrounded by the hosts of Yadus, (enjoying) manifold objects of every desire, endowed with supreme splendour. The Ādityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the two Aśvins and the Maruts, the sky, the earth and the directions, water and light — all this is Viṣṇu, the maker of the world, and no other. He is the establisher and the ordainer, the destroyer, and Time itself; truth, dharma, austerity, and the eternal brahman; among serpents he is known as Ananta, among Rudras as Śaṃkara. Moving and unmoving, the world arises from Nārāyaṇa; from this Janārdana the whole world is brought forth; and the lord of gods is the whole world — bow to him, Bhārata. This eternal one is ever to be worshipped by all the gods; this lord of the gods of gods is to be worshipped even by those worthy of worship, Vāsava among them; the lord of the gods of gods is to be offered sacrifice — bow to him, Bhārata. He is the first maker and the enjoyer, the origin of beings and being itself; bow to the lord of the world again and again, O mighty king. Bow always to Viṣṇu, the Yādava, the creator of beings; we salute the lord of the world, and Devakī, and Hari, always. Meditate constantly on the lord of the world, be supremely diligent; Viṣṇu will always bring about your good, there is no doubt. Fix your mind in salutation upon him, meditate upon that supreme one; Viṣṇu is always to be worshipped with the mind, O best of kings. Bow to the lord of the world again and again, O lord of the earth. Meditate always on Vāsudeva, Keśava, the slayer of Keśin. Meditate with effort on Nārāyaṇa, the subtlest, the best; for when meditated upon he will destroy all sins, without doubt. Thus have I told you the battle with Bāṇa and the greatness of Keśava; by the mere hearing of it you will obtain an incomparable establishment of your lineage.

Whoever, O king, retains this whole Marvel-section, he goes, freed from all sins, to Viṣṇu's world. He who, rising at dawn, recites it constantly with full concentration — for him nothing is hard to obtain, in this world or the next. A brahmin will become knower of all the Vedas; a kṣatriya will become victorious; a vaiśya will become rich in wealth; and a śūdra will attain a good goal; he will meet with nothing inauspicious and will obtain long life. The king who hears this holy Harivaṃśa will obtain long life, health, lordship and incomparable prosperity; the sonless gets a son, and even the poor man attains wealth; he obtains the quelling of all calamity and auspicious offspring. A man will find supreme devotion to Vāsudeva, and incomparable enjoyments on earth, and unimpeded majesty and fame. Hearing this Harivaṃśa one becomes ruler of a province; as long as moon and stars endure he will obtain (?) prosperity on earth. He who hears this constantly from a Viṣṇu-devoted bull among the twice-born will always be a conqueror of the directions, possessed of an army of four divisions. In the Veda, in the Rāmāyaṇa, in the Harivaṃśa and in the Bhārata, at the beginning, in the middle and likewise at the end, Hari is sung everywhere. Therefore Hari is always to be meditated upon, bearer of conch, discus and mace, the first maker, the sustainer of the earth, the lord of the world together with Śrī. Those men who will recite this holy lineage of his, this ancient narrative — for them there is no defeat. Recite the greatly prosperous Harivaṃśa again and again, O best of kings; may your mind become steady, may Janārdana be pleased. Thus the son of Parikṣit, the king, heard what Vaiśaṃpāyana spoke, and became pure, O bulls among the twice-born, (hearing) the Harivaṃśa.
