Then, with the din of drums and the great blasts of conches, and by all the heralds, panegyrists and bards, in their thousands: "Victory, victory, Lord of the world; victory, bearer of discus and mace; victory, dwelling-place of the three worlds; victory, you who are the whole universe. Victory, you on whose navel-born lotus the four-faced one is seated; victory, you by whose rays from the Kaustubha jewel the three worlds are lit. Victory, you whose pair of lotus feet rests in the lotus hand of Śrī; victory, you of the threefold abode, lord of all; victory, grandsire of the worlds. Victory, lord of sacrifice, O god; victory, teacher of the universe, Hari; victory, you whose lotus hands blaze with discus, mace, conch and lotus. Victory, you whose ring of a thousand arms is raised with the Śārṅga bow and other weapons; victory, you by whose discus-fire the entire host of asuras is burnt away. Victory, you whose lotus feet awaken the lotus of the yogins' minds; victory, Hari, in whose single foot the three worlds are absorbed. Victory, causeless cause of preservation, dissolution and origination; victory, Viṣṇu, Hṛṣīkeśa — conquer Bāṇa, the great asura!" Praised thus by men with upturned faces with benedictions of victory, Hari bore a form like that of the moon, the sun, and Indra.

Exceedingly did the form of Vainateya shine as he was about to fly up — blessings on you — swollen with Hari's splendour. Remembering again and again that form of the bearer of conch, discus and mace, we do not even now, Govinda, ever attain satiety with Hari. Then eight-armed Kṛṣṇa, resembling a mountain in shape, the lotus-eyed one, shone forth, desiring the destruction of Bāṇa.

Hearing this speech of the great-souled Keśava — hearing this utterance of Vāsudeva, Garuḍa, of great strength, able to take what form he wished, made himself a thousand mouths; then the strong son of Vinatā swiftly went to the Gaṅgā. Having plunged into the heavenly Gaṅgā and drunk much water, the mighty Vainateya, going up above, rained it down; with it the wise son of Vinatā quenched the fire. Taking it up with his two wings, he rained down much water; taking water there, he doused that fire, and then the āhavanīya fire came to rest. Seeing that āhavanīya fire quieted by the heavenly Gaṅgā, Suparṇa, in the utmost amazement, spoke these words: "Ah, the might of the fire, which would burn at the dissolution of the age — that very fire wrought the discolouring of wise Kṛṣṇa! The three are a match for the three worlds, such is my judgment: Kṛṣṇa, and Saṃkarṣaṇa, and mighty Pradyumna."

Seeing them, the fires that were Rudra's attendants, appointed before by the trident-bearer to the guarding of the city, pondered there; and in extreme wrath, setting the ten directions ablaze, they said: "These beings of various forms, terror-bringing, mounted on Garuḍa — for what purpose have they come here, and who are these three persons?"

Those fires of Girivraja came to no conclusion, and they began a battle with those three Yādavas. As they were engaged in the fight, a very great roar arose. And hearing that great roar, like that of roaring lions, then wise Aṅgiras sent a man of his own: "Go without delay to where that fight is going on." So, commanded by Bāṇa, the man, swift as thought, told "See all that and come back," bowing, then made haste.

Then all the remaining fires, the four sons of Brahmā, quickly summoned (their forces?) near Bāṇa's city. // Then Kṛṣṇa plunged on to where Bāṇa's city was. And seeing Bāṇa's city from afar, Nārada said: "That, Kṛṣṇa, is the Blood-city — look, O mighty-armed one! Here Rudra of great splendour dwelt together with Rudrāṇī, and Guha too, constantly, for Bāṇa's protection, for the sake of his safety." Hearing Nārada's words, Kṛṣṇa then said this: "Let safety be considered here — and hear this, great sage: even if Rudra should come down to protect Bāṇa, we too will fight here with him to the best of our power." While Kṛṣṇa and Nārada were thus disputing there, in the mere blink of an eye they arrived, by Garuḍa's swiftness. Then the lotus-eyed one brought his conch to his mouth, and in the battle Kṛṣṇa blew it, filling the directions with its blast; he blew it with the force of the wind, like a cloud disgorging the moon.

The valorous son of Vinatā (Garuḍa) made the enemies in battle struck by blows of his wings and torn by the tips of his beak and his claws; by the wise son of Vinatā they were brought to the mouth of the son of Vivasvat (Yama). Struck down by those of dreadful prowess, the army of the Daityas was then broken in the battle, battered by showers of arrows. Having conquered the Kaiṃkara army, Hari, honoured by the worlds, blew the great conch Pāñcajanya, terrifying to the Daityas; and as the divisions were being broken, he advanced wishing to save (them). Meanwhile, O king, Nārada went from the battle to Kailāsa, which resembles Meru; seen by Rudra, he was honoured, and asked: "Why have you come here, divine seer? Tell me that." Then the divine seer laughed and said to Rudra, O lord of earth: "Bāṇa is being slain, O god, by Kṛṣṇa and the plough-bearer, it seems; his whole army is broken and does not stand fast. Why do you remain unconcerned today, when your devotee is being oppressed? Give him aid — you are subject to your devotees." Hearing Nārada's words, Hara's lip quivered; he let out a sigh, O king, and someone came forth from it. To him, who asked Hara "What shall I do?", the lord of beings said: "Go swiftly to Bāṇa's city; slay Kṛṣṇa and the plough-armed one." Saying "So be it," he too vanished and went where Hari and the plough-bearer were. And Rudra said to the Pramathas: "Be ready, best of beings! Go ready, (you) whose mounts are the peacock and the ondara (?)... Go there, Nārada, and reassure Bāṇa, O lord: 'See, I have come for your sake, best of Daityas; I shall destroy those two foremost Yādavas who have come here, dull-witted (as they are).'" Saying "So be it," Nārada arrived and then announced it to Bāṇa; again he went to Kṛṣṇa's side, a sky-goer, or upon Garuḍa. And Rudra had the highest preparations made for the march. But Fever, coming to the battle, saw the plough-bearer in the fight slaying the Dānavas and Daiteyas, and he came to slay him — Fever, three-footed, three-headed, then unconquerable in battle.

When these words had been spoken, the plough-armed one was embraced by Bala (?) of measureless splendour; and Kṛṣṇa, best of strikers, laughed and spoke, saying "You must not fear" — and by Kṛṣṇa, out of the highest affection, he was then released from the burning. When Kṛṣṇa had suddenly, in the fight, released Bala there from the burning caused by the ashes of Fever, Madhusūdana, Vāsudeva, exceedingly wrathful, then addressed Fever; and Balabhadra obtained relief from Hṛṣīkeśa then in the battle. Coming between the two, Keśava stood ready for battle; swinging his arm suddenly, he said this to Fever: "Come, come, Fever, fight! Whatever power you have in a great battle, show it against me in the fray, O you skilled in war! And let your worship show us all your manhood." Then Fever, enraged, O king, the foremost of pains, (attacked) Hari; thus addressed, Fever then, the great-maced one, hurled at him with his left and right arms those ashes pregnant with flame. His body pierced by the ashes, Janārdana, god of gods — then the lord blazed up for a moment, Kṛṣṇa the best of strikers, and the fire went to quiescence again.

Then with those three serpent-shaped arms he struck Kṛṣṇa on the neck, and with one fist on the chest. Then the angered Hṛṣīkeśa struck him with his fist on the chest and on the head, again and again, that soul of beings. Then Fever, swinging his two arms corded with veins, struck (Kṛṣṇa's) chest with them and bit the best of the Yadus. Then the lord of the world, not enduring it, crushed him upon the face. That tumultuous clash of those two lions among men, of Fever and of great-souled Kṛṣṇa, was mighty; the sound was like that of thunderbolts falling on mountains. Then with eight arms and with three the exceedingly dreadful battle went on there, while the gods looked on; the fight was most terrible, with the arms and life-breaths of Kṛṣṇa and Fever. "It must not be struck in this way" — such was the cry there. For a moment the battle of those two great ones with each other went on. Then Viṣṇu wished to kill Fever, the terror of the worlds. Then the lord of the world, bearing a body, crushed with the circle of his arm, in the encounter, Fever with his varied golden ornaments — him, the imperishable sky-goer, he brought (under control) in the great battle.
