A two-armed man has taken his stand in battle against the thousand-armed one. If it pleases you, O king, he — endowed with valour and strength — should be found out. And this girl has been united with him and cannot be handed over to another. And if he is someone most dear in the lineage of a great-souled one, then this hero, this best of the Asuras, will surely receive honour. And when he had said, "Let him be guarded," (the other) stood assenting, "So be it." Bāṇa said "Very well," though in fact he was resolved to kill him. He bound Uṣā with fetters and with strong, tight cords. Then Bāṇa commanded many servants as guards: "Let this evil-souled one be guarded, and let her too, the disgrace of the family, be guarded." Having thus instructed them all, mighty Bāṇa, filled with the strength of his intoxication, went with Kumbhāṇḍa to his own palace. Having heard Kumbhāṇḍa's speech, in the inner apartments, greatly (bound) by the serpents — when this speech had been spoken by the great-souled Kumbhāṇḍa, Bāṇa, slayer of foes, said "So be it" to Kumbhāṇḍa. Then, having appointed guards for the wise Aniruddha — having fought Aniruddha, Bāṇa entered his own house. The son of Bali, the great Asura, went to his own palace. Having seen the mighty Aniruddha bound by magic, Nārada, best of seers, set out for Dvāravatī. Then the sage went by the path of the sky to Dvāravatī. When the foremost of seers had gone, that Aniruddha thought: "This cruel Dānava is destroyed, once he meets battle — no doubt of it. Nārada, having gone there, will inform the bearer of conch, discus and mace of this matter truly, just as it is." Seeing Pradyumna's son wrapped about by the serpents, Uṣā, stricken, wept, her eyes red with tears; to her weeping he spoke again: "Why this weeping, timid one? Do not fear, fair-eyed one. See, lovely-hipped one, that the slayer of Madhu has come for my sake — he at whose conch's sound and at the noise of Bala's arms the Dānavas will meet destruction, and the embryos of the Asuras' women too." Thus addressed by Aniruddha, Uṣā gained confidence; yet the slender-waisted one grieved over her cruel father. She reported to (Kṛṣṇa) of the Garuḍa-banner that Pradyumna's son was bound. Then in Aniruddha's house all the women wept in throngs, like kinnara-women, not seeing their beloved lord.

Asilomā and Pulomā, Nisunda and Naraka were slain; Saubha and Sālva were struck down, and Mainda and Dvivida too; and the very mighty Hayagrīva together with his followers was slain by you. (40) And Kaṃsa was slain, Kṛṣṇa, and Naraka was felled, and many others there, soldiers by hundreds of thousands. When such a terrible conflict had arisen for the sake of the gods, all these deeds, leaving nothing over, in battle after battle, you performed, Govinda—and you have no one to attack you from behind.

Some (stood) biting their lips, some with eyes dimmed by tears, and some brave men pondered, drawing their brows into a frown. (109.62) As they thought thus and spoke of many things—"And whence (has this befallen) Aniruddha?"—a very great agitation arose. The Yādavas, their anger roused, looked at one another; dispirited, they somehow passed that night, (saying) again and again, O subduer of foes, "Aniruddha has been carried off!" And as they were speaking thus, the night then became dawn. Then with the sounding of drums and the great blasts of conches the awakening of the mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa was performed in his palace. (109.63) Kṛṣṇa too, the lord of the gods of gods, stood as though bewildered as to what should be done: "What am I to do? From where indeed has this danger come? By all means, applying effort, I shall strive at what is further to be done. I shall go to the end of the directions, to the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa; where that grandson (of mine) is staying, there I shall go this very day. To which direction shall I go first? By whom might the whole (matter) be heard of? If someone should know it, then it would be well done." Then, when the morning was clear and the sun had appeared, Nārada entered the assembly hall alone, as if laughing. (109.64) Seeing all the Yādavas gathered together with Kṛṣṇa, he then honoured Mādhava with a cry of "Victory!" And Ugrasena and the others honoured that sage in return. Then Kṛṣṇa, dejected, unconquerable in assembly, rose up and the lord gave Nārada the honey-mixture and a cow.

There a great and most terrible battle took place between the two, Pradyumna's son and Bāṇa, in combat, like that of Bali and Indra. (109.73) And that very great and marvellous battle was seen by us also. Out of fear (?) mighty Aniruddha was bound with serpents by that Bāṇa, who never turns back in battles, resorting to magic—(109.74) after he had slain hosts of Dānavas by the crore and by the hundred. This such battle of Pradyumna's son was seen by me, O Viṣṇu. His slaying was ordered by Bāṇa, O you whose banner is Garuḍa; but his minister, named Kumbhāṇḍa, prevented it. Since Bāṇa was unable (to overcome) the prince Aniruddha in combat, resorting to magic he had him bound with serpents. Let you rise up quickly, for glory and for victory; this is no time to guard one's life, dear one, for those who seek victory. (109.75) With his life somewhat ebbing away, the hero stands holding fast to his courage." When these words had been spoken, the mighty Vāsudeva, full of valour, gave orders for the provisions for the journey. (109.76) And then the auspicious-day proclamation uttered by brahmins was heard. Then, being showered on all sides with sandal powder and parched grain, that mighty-armed Janārdana set out. (109.77) The lord of the world wished to go to slay the great asura Bāṇa. "You ought, Kṛṣṇa, to call to mind the son of Vinatā, for that road cannot be travelled by any other means, O mighty-armed one. (109.78) And hear of that road to be travelled, most hard to conquer: eleven thousand yojanas from here, O Janārdana, is Śoṇitapura, where Pradyumna's son now is.
