And how did the asura attain sonship of the god of gods—he who was himself protected, O brahman, by the great-souled Śaṃkara, who came here to dwell with him together with his host and with Guha; he who was the eldest son of the mighty Bali among a hundred brothers, endowed with a thousand arms bearing a hundred divine weapons, and with countless huge-bodied forces possessed of a hundred illusions, honoured by daityas whose strength was a hundred illusions and by the immortals and others—how was that Bāṇa defeated in battle by Vāsudeva, and how was he, enraged and seeking single combat, released alive?

And how a boon was given to him by the great-souled Śaṃkara — perpetual nearness (to the god) and likewise an imperishable lordship among the Gaṇas; how that battle of Bāṇa's took place, and how he was released alive, and how that Asura attained sonship to the God of gods, and for what purpose the great battle (was fought) — hear all of that in full. Seeing the body of the great-souled Kumāra as he played, the mighty son of Bali fell into the utmost astonishment. A thought arose in him: to practise very severe austerity in order to propitiate Rudra, so that I might become his son. Then that best of Asuras wasted his body away with austerity, and the god, together with Umā, came to the highest satisfaction. The Blue-throated one, having come to the greatest delight, said to the Asura: "Choose a boon, blessings on you — whatever is in your mind." Then Bāṇa spoke these words to the eternal God of gods: "I wish for sonship to the Goddess, granted by you, O three-eyed one." And Śaṃkara, saying "So be it," said this to Rudrāṇī: "Let this one be accepted as a son, younger than Kārtikeya. Where that great commander born of fire arose in the city, in blood — in that place there will be a city for him, no doubt. By name it will be Śoṇitapura, the best of cities; guarded by me and prosperous, no one will overcome it." Then that Bāṇa, dwelling in the city named Śoṇita, ruled a divine kingdom, agitating all the deities. Then Bāṇa, thousand-armed, puffed up with the intoxication of his valour, thinking nothing of the hosts of gods, constantly longed for battle. And Kumāra, pleased, gave him a banner with the splendour of fire, and as Bāṇa's mount a peacock of blazing splendour. Neither gods, nor Gandharvas, nor Yakṣas, nor serpents could stand up to him in battle, by the power of the God of gods. And guarded by the three-eyed one, the great Asura, puffed up with pride, sought battle again; he approached the Trident-bearer. And having propitiated the Lord of the world, Śaṃkara, borne by the bull, the trident-bearer, his limbs smeared with ash, ever delighting in dwelling on the mountain, matted-haired, ever shaven-headed, three-eyed, the resort of the mountain's daughter, he praised the god Īśāna, the choicest, the boon-giver, Śiva: "Homage to you, whose limbs are smeared with ash; homage, homage to you, the trident-bearer. Homage to him whose form is misshapen, and to him who delights in cremation grounds. Homage, homage to Hara, whose form is Hari, to Śaṃkara. Homage to you, misshapen-eyed one, who dwells in a tiger's skin. Homage to the god (Tuṇḍa), naked and grim; homage to you, giver of knowledge, the yogin of restrained mind. Homage to the first one, the seed, to the bull, to him whose form is a bull. Homage to the terrible, the terrible; homage to you, terrible of the terrible. To him who loves the terrible, the terrible, to Rudra, to the virile one, to him bull-shouldered, to the futile(?), to the mace-bearer, to the sword-bearer, homage. To the shaven-headed, to the misshapen, to Vāmadeva, homage to you; homage to the destroyer of Dakṣa's sacrifice, and to him who tore out Bhaga's eye. Homage to the destroyer of Smara, homage, homage to Guha's father. Homage to you, homage to you, who dwells in a panther's skin. Homage, homage, O Paśupati, O self of all, O bringer-into-being of all; O Lord of the world, let my heart's wish be fulfilled by your favour." Thus praised, the Lord of the world, the trident-bearer whose emblem is a bull — "Give me a thousand arms, and invulnerability even to the gods!" Then the son of Bali, having approached Rudra, bowing down and saluting him, asked this of him whose banner is the bull:

Thus urged by Kumbhāṇḍa's words, that bull among men, Bāṇa, best of speakers, spoke words unfaltering: (106.32) Then the ill-counselled (king spoke) to the well-counselled minister: "For a long time now, Kumbhāṇḍa, no battle has been obtained by me. Then I joyfully asked the mighty Blue-throated one — (106.33) and I fell with my head (at the feet) of the wise god of gods (saying): 'A very great longing for battle arises in me, O god; may I too obtain a battle that will content my mind.' (106.34) When I had made this request, O god, the bull-bannered one spoke to me; then by the god of gods, Hara, slayer of foes, laughing for a very long while, I was told today these welcome words:"

And we and the other ministers and the servants who follow you — all will soon come to ruin, O king, through (your) misgovernment. As the fall of the tree that was Śakra's banner came about through its own pride, so (will be the fall) of Bāṇa, who roars and out of delusion craves battle. Guha is always dearer to Bhava than his own life, and Bāṇa too, distinguished (even) beyond him, is constantly dear to Bhava. But out of the overflow of his pride he has begged a boon of Bhava for his own destruction; greedy for the sake of battle, he will in no way survive. If the gods headed by Viṣṇu, with Indra and the rest, are to obtain safety, it will have been brought about by Bhava's hand. And who here, coming (against them), is able to give battle to these two, Kumāra and Bhava, when they wish to be Bāṇa's helpers? Nor will the goddess's word turn out false in any way: there will be a great battle, the destruction of all the Daityas. Thus possessed by such reflection, Kumbhāṇḍa, who saw the truth, that great Asura set his mind on (securing) welfare.
