Having bowed to Nārāyaṇa, and to Nara the best of men, and to the goddess Sarasvatī, one should then proclaim 'Victory!' (0.0) Victorious is the son of Parāśara, the delight of Satyavatī's heart, Vyāsa, the nectar of speech fallen from whose lotus mouth the world drinks. They call him the sixth great seer beginning with the Grandfather, endowed with imperishable power, born of a portion of Nārāyaṇa, an only son, Dvaipāyana, the great treasure-house of the Veda. Having bowed to Hṛṣīkeśa, Hari, the teacher of the moving and unmoving—the primal Person, the ruler, much invoked, much praised, the truth, the single-syllabled brahman, manifest and unmanifest, eternal; who is non-being, and being-and-non-being, who is the universe, who is beyond being and non-being; the creator of the higher and the lower, ancient, supreme, unchanging, auspicious, the auspiciousness (itself), Viṣṇu, to be chosen, sinless, pure—in the Naimiṣa forest Śaunaka, head of the family, the great sage, righteous of soul, versed in all the sciences, questioned the Sauti. Satyavatī bore of Parāśara, by her own yoga, on an island, that son, the great seer, knowing much, supreme, exceedingly noble: to him be homage, the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance. He who gives a hundred cows with horns made of gold to a brahmin learned in the Veda and widely renowned, and he who likewise hears the holy tale of the Bhāratas—the fruit that comes to the one and to the other is equal. Whatever merit there is here of a hundred horse-sacrifices, and of four thousand (offerings) of the hundred-rited one—that becomes endless from the gift of the Harivaṃśa: so it has been declared by the great seer Vyāsa. What fruit is seen from the Vājapeya and from the Rājasūya, and other (fruit) from (the gift of) an elephant and chariot—that is obtained (here): Vyāsa's word is the authority, and it is sung also by the great seer Vālmīki. For him who attains the Bhārata as it is being recited—immeasurable, holy, purifying, sin-removing and blessed, issued from the enclosure of Dvaipāyana's lips—what need has he of consecration with the waters of Puṣkara? He who, of great austerity, has the Harivaṃśa copied according to the rule, at once goes to Hari's lotus foot, as a greedy bee to a lotus. Whom those who know the Vedānta call brahman, and others the supreme pradhāna, the Person, the cause of the world's course, the Lord—homage be to him, the destroyer of obstacles. He who with faith hears the Harivaṃśa, the increaser of lineage—Viṣṇu, the ferry across saṃsāra, to be meditated on by yogins, unsurpassed—for them syllable by syllable there is the fruit born of the gift of a tawny cow. The man who gives a book of the Harivaṃśa, together with a fee, to a learned brahmin, becomes a sharer in the fruit of a horse-sacrifice: this indeed has been truly told by the great seer. He on the tip of whose arm the discus rests, graceful in his hand, shining with the radiance of lightning; whose conch shines on his palm with the radiance of the full moon; whose garland has campaka flowers, tilaka, aśoka and blue lotuses—may he protect you, Hari, lord of the three worlds, whose stride is a three-fold pace. He who, because of being without qualities, is untouched by all those (afflictions) fixed in the mind beginning with ignorance, called the torments, the three faults, and by the deeds of the supreme guru's passion or their fruits; who is endowed with omniscience and the rest, the cause of the attainment of unsurpassed bliss for ascetics—may that beginningless Vāsudeva quell your evil accumulated in all births. Victory to you, lotus-eyed one; homage to you, creator of the universe; homage be to you, Hṛṣīkeśa, elder-born of the great Person. One should meditate on Viṣṇu clad in white garments, moon-coloured, four-armed, of gracious face, for the quelling of all obstacles. Him whom the lord of speech and the other well-minded ones, at the beginning of all undertakings, bow to and so accomplish their purpose—him, the elephant-faced, I salute. He whose belly is smeared with the sandal-paste of Indirā's breasts—may the man-lion soon give us abundant joy. (He who is) eager for the tumult of the waves of the Yamunā's water—may we purify our speech, soiled by wandering in the wilderness of unworthy praise, by the very Ganges of talk of Śauri's tales. Dark as a blue lotus cluster, the sprouting of Indirā's joy, the coral-tree of those who come to bow—I praise the delight of the Yadus. Vyāsa, grandson of Vasiṣṭha, son of Śakti, stainless, born of Parāśara, father of Śuka, a treasury of austerity—him I praise. To Vyāsa who is Viṣṇu's form, to Viṣṇu who is Vyāsa's form, homage indeed to the treasury of brahman, homage, homage to the descendant of Vasiṣṭha. "O Sauti, a very great narrative has been fully recited by you, of the Bhāratas and of all the kings likewise,

High and low beings were born from his limbs. Splitting Brahmā's heart, the lord Bhṛgu came forth; and splitting the right breast, a body (arose) from the brahma-born one: the lord Dharma issued forth, who brings happiness to all the worlds. He had three excellent sons, who charm the minds of all beings: Kāma, Śama, and Harṣa, upholding the worlds by their splendour. Rati is Kāma's wife, Prīti is Śama's lady, and Nandā is Harṣa's wife — (on them) the three worlds are established. When, as Prajāpati Āpava was engendering the creation of creatures, the creatures being created did not increase, then, making his body twofold, with one half he became male, with the other half female; on her he begot manifold offspring; and he stands pervading heaven and earth with his greatness.
