śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam- 12 śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca / nāḍīṃ samāviśya mahānubhāvaḥ śrīviṣṇubhakto tvatha puṣkarasthaḥ / vicārayāmāsa guruṃ svamūlaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ nirguṇamadvitīyam

The Śrī Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, (chapter) 12. Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Then the mighty one, the devotee of Śrī Viṣṇu, seated on the lotus, having entered into the channel, reflected upon his own root and teacher, Nārāyaṇa, the attributeless, the one without a second.

etāvatā haribhaktasya tasyāpyacchinnabhaktasya caturmukhasya / vicārakāle ca vicintanīyo hyajñānaleśastu khageśvareśvara

To this extent, in the case of that four-faced one, a devotee of Hari and indeed a devotee unbroken (in devotion), a trace of ignorance is to be conceived only at the time of (his) reflecting, O lord of the lord of birds.

yathāsti viṣṇormanaḥ saṅkalpa eva tathaiva sopi prakaroti nityam / ālocane tasya sadāsti bhūmansvayogyatāmanatikramya caiva

Just as Viṣṇu's mind is nothing but (his) will, so he too acts always; in his reflecting it is ever so, O abundant one, and (he acts) without exceeding his own capacity.

GaP 3 12.4

hareḥ svarūpe ca tathā prapañcaḥ svasminsvarūpe ca khagasti jñānam / yathāpi nityaṃ paricāravāri ca ajñātavaddṛśyate viṣṇunā ca

In Hari's own form there is thus the manifold world, and in his own self, O bird, there is knowledge; and just as the water of (his) service is eternal, so too it is seen by Viṣṇu as though unknown.

hareḥ prītyarthaṃ kurute sau kadāccittatrāpi kaścidviśeṣo 'sti vīndra / śṛṇuṣva samyaṅnigṛhītacitto yathā provāca sa vijānāti devaḥ

He does this for the sake of Hari's pleasure; and even there, O lord of birds, there is a certain distinction. Listen well, with mind well restrained, to how that god declared it — he knows.

sadā tvadoṣaṃ praviśeṣeśca muktavedāstathā vā pavijānanti nityam / tasya svarūpaṃ na tathā hariṃ ca svayogyatāmanatikramya vedhāḥ

Always the faultless one — and by particular distinctions the liberated ones and the Vedas likewise know (him) eternally; but his own form, and Hari, they do not (know) so, nor does the Creator, without overstepping his own fitness.

GaP 3 12.7

hareḥ svarūpaṃ na vijānāti sarvaṃ svayo gyarūpaṃ sarvadā vetti viṣṇoḥ / tatrājñānaṃ nāsti kiñciddvijendra yāvatsvarūpaṃ ca tathaiva lakṣmyāḥ

He does not know Hari's own form entirely; he always knows that form of Viṣṇu which is fit for himself. In that there is no ignorance at all, O best of the twice-born, as far as (his own) form extends, and likewise as far as Lakṣmī's.

GaP 3 12.8

vedhā na jānāti kutastadanye tayoḥ svarūpaṃna vijānāti sarvam / tathāpi vedānekadeśena veda jānāti lakṣmīrharirūpaṃ ca yāvat

The Creator does not know (it fully) — how then others? He does not know the whole of the forms of those two. Yet he knows through one portion of the Vedas; and Lakṣmī knows Hari's form as far as (she can).

tāvanna jānāti vidhiḥ khagendra jñāne vidhātuśca svayogyabhūte / ato viriñcasya na cintanīyo hyajñānaleśaḥ kvāpi deśe ca kāle

So far the Ordainer does not know, O king of birds, within the knowledge that is fit for the Ordainer himself; therefore not even a trace of ignorance is to be imagined of Viriñca in any place or time.

nāḍīṃ samāviśya tadā viriñco na veda nārāyaṇamekavacca / tadā śṛṇottaṃ kamalāsanaṃ prabhustapastapa dvyakṣaraṃ sādareṇa

Then Viriñca, having entered the stalk, did not know Nārāyaṇa even in a single word; then the lotus-seated one heard, with reverence, the Lord's two-syllabled utterance, "tapa, tapa" (practise austerity).

abhiprāyaṃ tasya samyagvidittvā tapaḥ kuru tvaṃ harituṣṭyarthameva / tapo 'karoddharipādaika niṣṭho hareḥ prītyarthaṃ divyasahasravarṣam

Having rightly understood his intent — "Do austerity, for the sake of Hari's satisfaction alone" — he, fixed solely on Hari's feet, performed austerity for Hari's pleasure for a thousand divine years.

tato hariḥ prādurāsītkhagendra varaṃ dātuṃ bhaktavarasya divyam / sadā viṣṇuṃ devadevo dadarśa caturbhujaṃ taṃ jalajāyatākṣam

Then Hari became manifest, O king of birds, to give a divine boon to the best of devotees; the god of gods beheld Viṣṇu, four-armed, with eyes long as lotuses.

śrīvatsalakṣmaṃ galaśobhikaustubhaṃ saṃpaśyantaṃ suprasannārdradṛṣṭyā / dṛṣṭvā hariṃ brahma nārāyaṇaṃ ca puraḥ sthitaṃ bhaktavaśyaṃ dayālum

(He beheld him) marked with the śrīvatsa, the Kaustubha shining on his throat, gazing (upon him) with a most gracious and tender look — having seen Hari Nārāyaṇa standing before him, compassionate, subject to his devotees, Brahmā (then...)

samarcayāmāsa mahāvibhūtyā bhaktyā hareḥ pādatīrthaṃ dadhāra / astaunmahābhāgavatapradhāno hariṃ guruṃ bhaktivivardhitātmā

He worshipped (him) with great magnificence and with devotion; he bore the water from Hari's feet. The foremost of the great devotees, his self swollen with devotion, praised Hari, the teacher.

brahmovāca / rameśa lokeśa jagannivāsa tava svarūpaṃ na vijānāti devī / tava prasādātsuvijānāti devī guṇānvedoktānsarvadā vīndra sarvān

Brahmā said: O lord of Ramā, lord of the worlds, dwelling of the universe, the Goddess does not know your own form; by your grace the Goddess knows well, and always, all the qualities declared in the Vedas, O lord of birds.

tathāpi sā na vijānāti devī sākalyenāśeṣitaḥ sadguṇāṃśca / yadyapyanuktaṃ pañcabhirnāsti vedaistathāpi deve 'tra viśeṣa āste

Even so, that Goddess does not know your true qualities in their entirety, without remainder; and although there is nothing left unsaid by the five Vedas, yet in this god there remains a distinction.

tattvecchavaḥ pravijānanti nityaṃ vede sūktānkvāpyanuktāṃśca sarvān / ādau jānantyatra vedā murāre ṛgādayaḥ suṣṭhu catvāra eva

Those who desire the truth know constantly the hymns in the Veda and all those (qualities) nowhere stated; here at the outset the Vedas know (them), O Murāri — the four indeed, Ṛg and the rest, fully.

vedā hyete vedayantīti deva tathā purāṇaṃ bhārataṃ pañcarātram / kramādito vicintya sā viṣṇuguṇānsvayogyānsadā vijānāti ramāpi devī

"For these Vedas make (it) known" — so, O God — and likewise the Purāṇa, the Bhārata, the Pañcarātra; reflecting on them in order from the beginning, she too, the goddess Ramā, always knows those qualities of Viṣṇu that are fit for her.

viśeṣato hyuktaguṇā nṛgādiṣu svayogyabhūtānsaṃvijānāti devī / sāmānyataḥ pravijānāti devī harerguṇānna viśeṣācca nityam

In particular the Goddess fully knows those qualities, stated in (the accounts of) men and others, which are suited to herself; the Goddess knows Hari's qualities in a general way, but not eternally in their particularity.

ahaṃ vijānāmi ramāpra sādāttava prasādācca guṇānsadaiva / svayogyabhūtāñchrutipūktān guṇāṃśca kāṃścidvijānāti harerna kaścit

I know, by Ramā's grace and by your grace, the qualities always — those suited to myself and stated in the śruti; but some qualities of Hari no one knows.

tava prasādācca mama prasādātkālāntare tāṃśca jānāti śeṣaḥ / duṣkarmaleśānna tirohitān guṇānyāneva pūrvaṃ viditān svayogyān

By your grace and by my grace, at another time Śeṣa too knows them — the qualities not veiled by a trace of bad karma, those very ones, suited to himself, that were known before.

Having known those very ones again, Śeṣa is thereafter called one who has regained the qualities that were veiled; and the lord of Umā too, by your grace, (knows) always those qualities of Hari that are suited to himself.

When he knows (them), O Hari, O Murāri, then Hara is said to have obtained what was not obtained. And when, O Murāri, (he knows) my world as well, then he knows your own form. (23) O Govinda, eternal, imperishable, full of consciousness — by your grace that (ignorance) of mine is not (found) among hundreds; but those gods who bear bodies are devoid of knowledge and fixed upon sense objects. (24) Whichever gods are fixed upon sense objects, those gods have their aims directed outward; and whichever gods have their aims directed outward, they are apart from liberation, ever babbling.

tava svarūpe ca jagatsvarūpe tavāsamānaṃ nāsti viṣṇo sadaiva / yatastava prākṛto nāsti deho yato jñānaṃ nāsti nāstye va nityam

In your own nature and in the nature of the world, O Viṣṇu, there is never anything equal to you; since you have no material body, and since there is no (limit to your) knowledge, there is nothing at all, eternally.

pūrṇānandajñānadeho 'pi nityaṃ sadā śarīrī bhāṣyate bhaktimadbhiḥ / yatastava prākṛto nāsti deho hyatopi nityamaśarīrīti ca smṛtaḥ

Although (your) body is eternally one of full bliss and knowledge, you are always spoken of as embodied by the devotees; and since you have no material body, for that very reason you are also remembered as eternally bodiless.

nato 'haṃ sarvadāsmiñśarīre 'haṃmametyabhimānena śūnyaḥ / atto 'pyahaṃ tvaśarīrī sadaiva tathaiva nityaṃ bahirarthaiśca śūnyaḥ

I bow (to you), being always empty, in this body, of the conceit of "I" and "mine"; therefore I too am ever bodiless, and likewise eternally empty of external objects.

svabhogabhāryāsatyalokādibhogaḥ svayogyabhogo vastramālyādibhogaḥ / ete hi sarve bahirarthasaṃjñakāḥ naisargakāmāḥ sarvadā me hi viṣṇo

The enjoyment of one's own pleasures, of a wife, of the true world and so forth, the enjoyment proper to oneself, the enjoyment of clothes, garlands and the rest — all these are called "external objects," natural desires, always (present) in me indeed, O Viṣṇu.

tathāpyahaṃ kāmahīno hi nityaṃ rudrādayaḥ kāmavanto yatotaḥ / śarīriṇaste bahirarthabhāvā ajñānavanto 'pi ca saṃsmṛtāḥ khaga

Yet I am eternally free of desire; since Rudra and the others possess desire, therefore they are embodied, given to external objects, and are recorded as also possessing ignorance, O bird.

nityānandādanyakāmo na mesti ataḥ sadā bahirarthaiśca śūnyaḥ / mamāpi bhāryā bahirarthaśūnyā amūḍhabhāvā mūḍhavatīva dṛśyate

I have no desire other than eternal bliss; therefore I am always empty of external objects. My wife too is empty of external objects: not deluded in nature, she yet appears as though deluded.

aspaṣṭaparūpā nyūnatā hyasti vāyau tathā jñānaṃ naiva saṃcintanīyam / etādṛśī jñānaśaktirmurārervāyvādīnāṃ mokṣaparyantamasti

In Vāyu there is a deficiency of unclear form; yet his knowledge is not to be thought of (as deficient). Such is the power of knowledge of Murāri, and of Vāyu and the rest, right up to liberation.

But the knowledge of the upright ones at the time of liberation ... (and) of the manifold Vāyu and the rest, is not (destroyed) by the dissolution ...; for Vāyu and for me, in the dissolution and at the time of creation, and likewise for Gāyatrī, there is no delusion at all.

gāyatrīvadbhāratyā devadeva jñātavyamevaṃ haritattvavedibhiḥ / mamājñānaṃ dṛśyate yatra kutra daityādīnāṃ mohanārtha sadaiva

As with Gāyatrī, so with Bhāratī, O god of gods — thus it should be understood by those who know the truth of Hari. Wherever ignorance is seen in me, it is always for the sake of deluding the demons and the rest.

aparokṣānantaraṃ tu nāstyajñānaṃ na saṃśayaḥ / śatajanmasu deveśa aparokṣeṇa sarvadā

After direct perception, however, there is no ignorance — no doubt of it. In (my) hundred births, O lord of gods, always through direct perception,

pūrṇajñānaṃ mamāstyeva nātra kāryā vicāraṇā / śatajanmasu pūrvaṃ tu parokṣeṇa mama prabho

I have full knowledge indeed; no deliberation is to be made about this. But in the hundred births before, O lord, for me (knowledge was) through mediate cognition;

GaP 3 12.44

pūrṇaṃ jñānaṃ sadāpyastītyevamāhurmaharṣayaḥ / saṃjñājanmagatāyāśca sarasvatyā mahāprabho

even so, full knowledge is always present — thus the great sages say. And of Sarasvatī, who has passed through births (bearing) the name (Saṃjñā?), O great lord,

nājñānaṃ cintanīyaṃ hi brahmayvośca deva hi / atra kaścidviśeṣosti jñātavyastatvamicchubhiḥ

no ignorance is to be supposed, O god, either of Brahmā or of (his consort); yet there is some distinction here, to be known by those who desire the truth.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

GaP 3 12.46

avatāreṣu bhāratyāḥ kadācijjñānapūrvakam / sarvadā jñānarūpā sā sarvaduḥ khavivarjitā

In the descents (avatāras) of Bhāratī, (knowledge appears) sometimes as preceded by knowledge; (yet) she is at all times of the very nature of knowledge, wholly free from every sorrow.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

GaP 3 12.47

daityānāṃ mohanārthāya aṃśe duḥ khīva dṛśyate / tasyā duḥ khādikaṃ kiñcinnāstināstyeva sarvathā

In (her) partial (manifestation) she appears as though sorrowful, in order to delude the demons; but of sorrow and the like she has nothing at all — it simply does not exist, in any way whatever.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

GaP 3 12.48

aparokṣatirobhāva īṣatkāle pradṛśyate / tāvanmātreṇa vājñānaṃ tasyāṃ naivāhitaṃ ca yat

A concealment of direct (knowledge) is displayed for a very short time; but by just so much no ignorance is ever brought about in her.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

GaP 3 12.49

mūlarūpe tu nāstyeva bhāratyā jñānavismṛtiḥ / bhāratyāstu yathā nāsti sarasvatyāstu kiṃ punaḥ

But in (her) root form there is simply no forgetting of knowledge in Bhāratī; and if it does not exist for Bhāratī, how much less for Sarasvatī?

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

GaP 3 12.50

aṃśāvataraṇaṃ nāsti sarasvatyāḥ kadācana / aṃśāvataraṇaṃ nāsti mamāpi madhusūdana

There is never any descent as a part (aṃśa) of Sarasvatī; nor is there any descent as a part of me either, O Madhusūdana.

tathaiva jñānamastyeva harernārāyaṇasya ca / vāyoraṃśāvatārosti yathā mūle tathaiva ca

Just so, knowledge is indeed present in Hari and in Nārāyaṇa. Vāyu has a descent as a part, (and it is) just as in (his) root (form).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

GaP 3 12.52

balajñānā dikaṃ sarvaṃ cintanīyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ / tathāpi vāyau dṛśyante balajñānādivyaktayaḥ

All (his) strength, knowledge and the rest are to be understood (as full) — there is no doubt; and yet in Vāyu the manifestations of strength, knowledge and so on are (only partly) seen.

avatāreṣu vāyostu samyak śaktyātmanāsti hi / aparokṣatirobhāvau nāṃśāvataraṇeṣvapi

But in the descents of Vāyu (all this) is fully present in the form of (his) power; there is no concealment of direct (knowledge), not even in the descents as a part.

balajñānādikaṃ yāvanmūlarūpe pradṛśyate / tretāyugasvarūpe ca na darśayati tādṛśam

As much strength, knowledge and the rest as is displayed in the root form, he does not display the like in his form belonging to the Tretā age.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

GaP 3 12.55

tretāyugasvarūpe ca yādṛk cādarśayatprabho / dvāparasthe svarūpe tattaddarśayati tādṛśam / tretāyugasvarūpe ca yādṛk cādarśayatprabho

And such as he displayed, O Lord, in his form of the Tretā age, that very same he displays in the form present in the Dvāpara (age) — such as he displayed, O Lord, in his form of the Tretā age.

tathā darśayate vāyurdaityānāṃ mohanāya ca / avatāreṣu vāyośca antaraṃ ye viduḥ prabho

Thus Vāyu displays (himself) also for the deluding of the demons. And those who suppose a difference among the descents of Vāyu, O Lord —
