Chapter 71 begins — Ka said: On another day, O brahmin, the king went to the auspicious seat, (and summoned) his ministers and the chief of his warriors, and the elders, his friends, and the twice-born. Chapter 72 begins — Ka said: That Vināyaka had already been announced to Aditi by a messenger; he came together with the king of Kāśī, who was mounted in a chariot. Chapter 73 begins — Vyāsa said: How, O brahmin, was he called Mayūreśvara in Śiva's house? And for what purpose did he descend, and what was that deed of his, father? — whose welfare is welfare-making for the worlds, like an āmalaka fruit (in the palm); whose two ministers of great intelligence were Sāmba and Subodhana; from whose moon-face the night-lotuses open by day, and who by the radiance of many ornaments destroyed all the darkness. And whatever deeds have been performed by me for the sake of a son — if they should have been done with the intent of offering them to the Lord, then, at that time...

Having summoned (them) and made obeisance, he spoke what was set in his heart. The king said: Vināyaka has been invited for my son's marriage. Then the king of Magadha too, taking his daughter, (came) to that city; all the friends came, assembled from the various quarters. Likewise the women of the town, and girls, charming and in their youth, putting their own ornaments on awry, came to gaze at him. "Having stolen the hearts of us all, how do you go away? How shall we do our work, when our minds have been carried off?" To them as they wailed he said: "I shall come again; let them go. No anxiety should be felt: I tell you the truth, never a falsehood anywhere." Then she, running on out of separation from him, went ahead; hastened by her eagerness she did not know that her own garment-hem had fallen. Wide fame was won and dykes of dharma established; and such manly deed was done by him as was not done by Indra and the rest. Ka said: He reported to him his deeds, the slaying of the demons and the rest. Then both rejoiced, the sage's wife and that sage. Knowing the valour of their own son and his many virtues, they reverently established her by the name Ḍhuṇḍhirāja; and with officiating priests, brahmins and others versed in Veda and śāstra, the two had an image made and a most beautiful temple, and, intent in devotion, gave him the name Vināyaka. And how did the designation Mayūreśvara come about for Vināyaka? Tell me all this: hearing it I am never sated. In whose house Lakṣmī stands fast, visible in person, ceaselessly making the quarters bright with jewels, gold and pearls. May there be liberation for both, and also the destruction of the karma of former births. My lifetime has gone in vain; O people, I shall now go gladly to the forest. Having handed everything over to the subjects, you being doers of his word, I shall go to the forest, O people, to practise austerity for (the world's) good. Then the sage, well pleased, spoke to Cakrapāṇi, best of kings, with the highest devotion, with deference and with self-restraint, of that which quells the sins of many births and gives sons and grandsons. The sage said: A vow of just one month is to be performed, beginning on the Sun's seventh day. Together with his wife, humble in spirit, wholly devoted to the Sun, he fed brahmins at will, to the number of a hundred thousand. The king said: That Savitṛ, my dear, is pleased by salutations and by feedings, by gifts to brahmins and gifts of cows, by fasts and by recitations. Ka said: So (speaking), the ocean brought that boy to the king's palace; setting him before the couple, the twice-born then spoke thus: "The embryo was cast off by your wife into my belly, because it was unbearable; from it was born a fierce boy, a terror to all the worlds, at whose first cry the three worlds were shaken. He cannot be looked upon with the eyes — for that very reason I have brought him here." Having said this and let the boy go, the ocean then vanished. Then that royal lady took him with both hands upon her hip, and having set him there she lovingly gave him the breast, filled with joy. Both of them, the husband and wife, were filled with bliss at the sight of their son, as one long fixed in yoga on obtaining the supreme nectar of Brahman. Then he summoned the brahmins and his friends as well.

Many portents occurred, and they were averted by him. And I told Aditi: "Quickly (behold) your auspicious son." Seeing her, the sage's son too leapt down at once from the chariot, came to his mother's side and joyfully embraced her. Ka said: In the Tretā age there was formerly a great demon named Sindhu; he was slain by that mighty one who had descended in Śiva's abode. The sage said: Do not grieve, lord of kings, and do not give up your kingdom; a son will duly be born to you by my word — there is no doubt here. He gave him ornaments made of jewels and gold, and very costly garments, but the sage did not accept them: "Kamalā never takes up her seat among the learned; therefore I shall not take this gold and this fine raiment." Chapter 74 begins — Ka said: When the embryo had been cast off by her into the ocean, a boy of great strength was born, blazing, with a hideous face, broad-browed, three-eyed, with a mass of red matted hair, discus in hand, bearing a trident. Then at that boy's cry the three worlds shook. With arms reaching to his knees, he sought to overrun the triple world; by him the ocean with its sea-creatures was thrown into turmoil, O best of sages.

"I shall bring (him) there." Many days passed swiftly. "When the three worlds are at ease, let his marriage be considered." She shed tears of joy, and he too, come after long, shed tears; for a moment the two came into a single condition, like two (streams of) milk. Here too they cite this ancient tale, the conversation of Śaunaka with king Cakrapāṇi. But that boy, staying there, dried up the ocean. The ocean said: For the sake of my own life I shall take this son of mine to the king's palace.

Ka said: Hearing that speech, all the townsfolk rejoiced; they bowed, circumambulated him, and praised him with shouts of victory. Ka said: Having heard his words, the two, dejected, their throats choked with tears, said to him: When, O god, will there be a sight of you for us two again? On the occasion of a pilgrimage I came to you, and many days have passed in seeing you.

Then he said to his mother: A sight of me will be had in Bhavānī's temple, mother; the kind word I speak is true. Ka said: Again the couple bowed properly to the sage Śaunaka, and asked him for the means able to produce offspring.

Together with the king of Kāśī, longing to see his mother, he turned back and looked at the faces of the townsmen's boys. Having heard the god's words thus, while he was still speaking again, meanwhile the god vanished; then those two, dejected in mind, reckoning all vows, austerities, sacrifices and gifts to be in vain—then the sage told them of the solar vow that grants men every object.

Thus, having turned them back, in an instant he reached his own hermitage. In that image the Lord, as soon as he is meditated upon, always shows himself, all-pervading and of many forms—he, Vināyaka. Having performed the ābhyudayika śrāddha, preceded by worship of the Mothers, and having honoured the Lord of the Gaṇas, and having the best of brahmins pronounce the benediction—
