Śiva said: (He is) the cause of the five elements and of the causes too, dense with consciousness and bliss, to be meditated on by all, within the range of Vedānta. Having expelled Divodāsa, who has a share in the people's sin — The sage said: Having said this and bowed to Śiva and to Pārvatī and the six-faced one; whatever was being eaten by whomever, and whatever was about to be eaten, at that instant. Having washed his two feet, quite overwhelmed at the sight of him, they rubbed musk and sandal on his body. Then Ḍhuṇḍhi, free of the manifold, spoke to that king. Abandoning wife, sons, daughter, house and the rest, he went to Vārāṇasī. Gṛtsamada said: Thus by him all the people dwelling in Kāśī were brought under his sway; abandoning all their rites, they served him alone. Forsaking even the brahmins, they enjoyed the highest enjoyment. His wife, named Kamalā, fulfilling wishes — Here the meritorious should dwell, by those who desire liberation at death; but the sinful are put outside by Bhairava. The sage said: Thus addressed, that Supreme Self spoke to the best of kings: "And by the grace of Viśveśvara, O best of kings, for you too..." "The kingdom has been abandoned by that king of yours at the word of Gaṇeśa, knower of the stars; come quickly, O Viśveśa, to your own city Vārāṇasī." And that one of great intellect sent a messenger to Śaṃkara saying "Let him come quickly"; then he, filled with joy — Bowing to you alone and worshipping you, the good offer sacrifice, remembering you with the mind; fixing devotion in you alone, they obtain liberation, free from return. And from remembrance (of him) there will be the granting of success in all undertakings. The sage said: Having spoken thus, he installed (the image) fashioned of Gaṇḍakī stone. With heaps of gold and jewels presented as the fee — "the god's face is not to be seen": so she became given over to anxiety. Well pleased, I shall grant what is in your mind. Not with pearls, nor with jewels, nor with substances of many kinds do I (worship you); with śamī leaves your worship has been declared, for the gaining of you. By the sage's power you have been seen, O remover of the three afflictions. Joyful, and grieved, O god, from separation, (she went to) her own city, adorned with many flags and banners, with sprinklings and incense. Having prepared the materials for the consecration and summoned excellent brahmins and friends, he gave the consecration to his son among all the princes. Therefore I too am to be worshipped by you with śamī and mandāra, O sage; a flower or leaf offered with devotion becomes as nectar. That which stands imperishable even at the time of the great dissolution — that is the seat of that god, his eternal place of sleep. Ka said: In the course of a pilgrimage Mudgala came to that king; the king, having worshipped him, questioned that all-knowing sage. Then, after a long time, that Vināyaka descended, the lord who bears a body for play, in the house of Kaśyapa. Having seated him on a seat and then worshipped him duly, with folded hands he said: Blessed is my birth in (my) lineage. Exceedingly deep is the course of this world, O king; one name of it is Divyaloka and the other is Nijaloka. Vaikuṇṭha has twelve spokes; there Viṣṇu always abides. In the lotus of the throat is that five-faced one, as on Kailāsa with his hosts. The Svānandabhavana shines, where countless houses made of gold and jewels shine, radiant, with elephant-pearls. Tejovatī and Jvālinī, the two śaktis, stand always at the two sides of the couch, O king, resembling a thousand suns.

You are pradhāna and puruṣa, the maker of the division of the three guṇas, pervading the universe, the treasury of the universe, intent on protecting the universe. By (him) who reveals what has been, what is to come, what is remote, and what will be. Then Viṣṇu, in Buddhist form, stood outside the five krośas. Mounting the bull, the god went to the city of Vārāṇasī, surrounded by his own hosts with the sound of divine instruments. Those two, the king's wife and his son, both muttering the name of Ḍhuṇḍhi — knowing (this), they went by human conveyance with the army and the sounds of music. The king said: What is Vināyaka's world, and how is it to be attained by me? The sage said: "Svānandabhuvana" and likewise "Nijaloka" — these two (names).

And you are the maker of many incarnations, intent on removing the earth's burden, able to protect the gods and likewise to slay the demons. Having come, by his māyā he produced delusion in all embodied beings; hating the bull of dharma, he taught what is contrary to śruti and smṛti. Having favoured Jaigīṣavya, who was without food and stood like an anthill, he went to Ḍhuṇḍhi and, bowing, spoke to him. He brought (him) to the city well known by the name Karṇapura; quickly kissing his son's head, he embraced him with the greatest reverence. The name of Vaināyaka's world is renowned. When the two demons Devāntaka and Narāntaka shall be born —

When you, whose nature is Brahman, have gone of your own will (for the sake) of the brahmins, of the dharmas, and of the afflicted who seek refuge — he too by his own words brought all the great folk under his sway; he respectfully condemned all worship of the god with form. Śiva said: You alone, O Viśveśvara, of universal form, create, devour and protect the universe, O god; and observing his good and bad deeds, you grant him manifold experience. Gaṇeśa, greatly pleased, said with a voice choked with joy: O son, quick to be gracious, you are weary for many days. Vināyaka too will descend among men to slay those two; and he, in the form of a boy, (will perform) sports of wondrous valour.

To what other refuge shall I go, grieved by separation from Kāśī? Ḍhuṇḍhi said: You send only others, skilled in all branches of knowledge. Why is an earthen image worshipped, and fiery ones too? Every person is deluded in mind, while the supreme Self dwells in the heart. Brahmā too performs creation at your hint, and Hari its protection; and I am the one who works destruction here of the moving and the unmoving; and the work of dividing the three guṇas indeed. Seeing you he attained the highest delight, as though he had obtained nectar; he dismissed all the people, giving them garments and gifts. Why, all-seeing one, do you fall into delusion, O Sadāśiva? Śiva said: Go this very moment, O elephant-faced one, to Avimukta. There is the cutting of living trees, and the killing of animals too; he who gives his own wealth away to another. By your grace Hari, and the lotus-born, and Śiva are able to accomplish their own work; without you the Vedic ordinance would be in vain; by your power comes the destruction of the gods' foes, and fame. That king afterwards — then the two spoke to each other; and she reported the whole matter to this king. For the obstruction of Divodāsa and for the accomplishment of my purpose, delude the people by māyā, whereby his merit is diminished. When the body has perished, the elements dissolve into the five times five; cooked food with ghee is to be eaten by oneself with gladness. Prakṛti of infinite power, having formerly worshipped you, slew the wicked buffalo; she protected this whole world, which was terrified by the falling of mountains shaken by his breath. The two of them performed mutual embracings and kissings, laughter and amusement, and out of great joy the breaking of betel too, and the shameless battle of love. When he comes to your house, then through devotion to him, O king of Kāśī, mighty-armed one, you will attain his own world.

Ḍhuṇḍhi said: I go at once, O Mahādeva; you need not worry. I shall bring about your welfare, I shall show you your own city. That embodied self is to be fully worshipped with various enjoyments, at ease. Then all the people, abandoning each his own path, became so. You are immeasurable, the witness of all worlds, imperishable, the cause of causes; the Vedas and the Vaikuṇṭhas are all in you; Śeṣa bears the earth through devotion to you. Then after some days, knowing his son to be a mine of virtues, modest, knowing all dharma, skilled in the science of polity — Ka said: Having spoken thus, when he had gone, the king of Kāśī of great mind, practising devotion to Gaṇeśa, waited for the time.

Having circumambulated Nārada and likewise his teacher, the lord, the treasury of all knowledge and of the arts, set out. He deluded all the women who dwelt in Vārāṇasī; day by day he diligently taught the evil path. You are of many forms, feet and eyes, of many heads, ears, arms and tongues; dense with infinite knowledge, the cause of many universes, the supreme light. At an auspicious moment, when the lagna was joined with seven favourable planets, having performed the ābhyudayika śrāddha preceded by the recitation of benedictions — demons of many kinds were slain, sports of many kinds were performed; he then at once took away poverty in Śukla's house.

He reached holy Vārāṇasī, and having obtained merit he beheld (it). He at once became an astrologer, having marked his sin. The minds of those city- and village-dwellers are split apart. In one's own body, in the husband's body, in another's body, it is the very same (self). By your grace this Avimukta has been seen at last by me who strove, O lord of all. The sage said: Having thus praised and worshipped him, Śaṃkara prayed. He had the consecration performed with waters mixed with many substances, while all the drums sounded, with the mantras of the Ṛg, Yajus and Sāman. The mighty one came again to the palace of the king of Kāśī; the two mighty demons Devāntaka and Narāntaka were slain.

Just as a man is not divided up by his mouth, nose, hands and so on, so the self is not divided by these four kinds of bodies. Thus enticed, the wives resorted to other men as well. My grief of separation is gone, now that I have reached the city of Vārāṇasī; now protect always my devotees and this city. Having again satisfied other brahmins with gifts of fees and jewels, and having himself taken the vow of forest-dwelling, and having asked (leave), he went to Svānandabhavana, which lies in the midst of the ocean of milk; but the king of Kāśī, out of separation, thought of him constantly.

Of golden radiance, of divine body, adorned with pearl garlands, and with a girdle at the navel set with great jewels. The brahmins became slack in reverence for the agnihotra rites and the sacrifices, for vows, giving, oblation, and the worship of gods and brahmins. Without your grace there can never be residence in Kāśī; of Daṇḍapāṇi, of Bhairava — they too, on whom his grace should come. The king dismissed them all and established himself in his own practice. Then he of the axe-arm ruled this earth. "This very Vināyaka is embracing some man": thinking thus, in the midst of the assembly (he saw) the whole world as one with him.

They came to have doubts about the slaughter of sacrificial animals; in one another's houses they enjoyed the highest enjoyment. I impart the Tāraka-brahman at his end, and not otherwise. Even those women who were devoted to their husbands desired the brahmin. He would declare in full the question (merely) thought in the mind. They themselves consumed the offerings for the dead and the (fruits of) vows; thus there came about a lapse of dharma and only an increase of sin. One should worship (him) with cakes, sweetmeats and other services; and whoever, having (had) his distress removed, praises (him) with recitation of the hymn — he made an image (of Ganesha) out of mandāra wood and wore it on his neck. He never performs worship without śamī and dūrvā; sometimes he eats a mere mouthful, as he sees fit; sometimes he laughs, and sometimes then the king would dance.

Therefore the husband-devoted women followed him in order to ask a question, abandoning their children, husbands, brothers and other friends. He tells people their dreams, (dreams) shown by his own magic. Then the Buddhist went quickly to Divodāsa's palace; he was worshipped by him with the highest devotion on his own fine seat. "Grant him too all his desires, and wealth in many forms." Whoever, rising at dawn, or at the three junctures of the day, (recites) this with devotion — he enjoyed manifold pleasures and many women, yet in accordance with dharma; having begotten sons and given gifts for a thousand years, he sleeps for a long time, seeing Vināyaka in his dream. With the king in this state, the ministers fell into most dreadful anxiety.

The Buddhist said: Listen, king, I speak what is good for you; having heard it, do it respectfully. Should one recite the hymn even once, devotion and liberation are his. Having sought out all their aims, you arrange them for men here. Women who were altogether barren became mothers of sons through his granting of boons. Looking at the hand he declares great good fortune and (past) deeds. This Vārāṇasī was fashioned by the trident-bearer out of his own splendour; even at the dissolution it is held on the trident's point together with all creatures. Therefore you shall be renowned in the three worlds as Dhuṇḍhi; that very name Dhuṇḍhi bestows liberation and destroys sin. The sage said: Thus the power of the śamī has been set forth to you in brief, and the merit of its worship, and incidentally that of the mandāra. At that very moment Mudgala, releasing his meditation, went to the king; and the king, awakened by the sight of him, bowed to the sage.

Mahādeva (set up) the image of Dhuṇḍhi in a beautifully built temple; then he entered his own dwelling, and all the gods their own shrines. Offering forbidden leaves, flowers and the like, one goes to hell. Whichever deity is chief for a man, that one is his chosen one, or (he may choose) among the others. From disrespect comes great suffering; through merit I have seen you. Then the brahmin, well pleased by his words, said to him — the sage said: One so humbly disposed as you has neither been seen nor heard of; I am well pleased by your worship, and I grant you what you wish.

He himself declares (a man's) intention: "Within three days you will become rich in wealth" — and so it comes about for him. "Tell me, who are you, come here for my benefit? — if it is possible for me to know your true nature, O best of persons." Such is the power of that god, by whose boon the son came into being. Ka said: Having thus recounted the doings of Dhuṇḍhi to him, (Gṛtsamada said:) one who worships attains (it); devotion is of three kinds and is surely not in vain. Vyāsa said: In what region does Vināyaka's world stand? Ka said: Well pleased by his words, the king of Kāśī said to him: (may I reach) the abode of Self-bliss, O sage, with this very body.

He tells what has gone and what is lost, and as he says it, so it turns out. As Dhuṇḍhi, in the form of a brahmin, was speaking thus — Ka said: Then, filled with compassion, he showed that king his own four-armed form, bearing conch, discus and mace. Taking leave, he went quickly to his own hermitage grounds. At that very moment she set out, taking the leaf. "You must now cut through this doubt of mine, O brahman; whom else should I ask, passing over you who know all? And I would wish to remain there long, and not for riches." Then that Mudgala, well pleased by her words, spoke.

In two or three months the report, spread abroad by the people, reached the king's ear. The people said: The king's wives too, and other women intent on fidelity to their husbands — and the form of pure consciousness was displayed in both its collective and its individual aspect. Then the king made obeisance and worshipped with the greatest joy. She went to Dhuṇḍhi's shrine, thronged with many women and men; seeing (him) amid those who were holding a great festival, Kīrti bowed to him. Brahmā said: By me too it was told to Nārada, and by him to Mudgala, and to the king of Kāśī the auspicious world of Vināyaka was declared. With this very insentient body, O king, you shall attain Gaṇeśa's abode of Self-bliss, free from returning again.

He went to holy Vārāṇasī, which grants liberation through dying (there). Formerly, abandoning the kingdom, I performed much austerity; this unsurpassed kingdom was given to me by Brahmā by force. He was worshipped with cooked foods, milk-rice and the rest set in many golden vessels, by throngs of devotees skilled in dance and song. The king of Kāśī, seated in a celestial car, saw with his fleshly eyes (that) on attaining which neither woman nor man meets with sorrow or the pairs of opposites. The king said: What is that world like, what is its name? Tell me truly, O sage; by what merit is it reached? I have heard of all the worlds.

Bowing his head with devotion to the astrologer — Gaṇeśa, the Buddhist, the deceiver Hari — he said to him, "Who are you?" King Dhuṇḍhi was not so pleased by heaps of goods. Then all the devotees, honoured, went each to his own house. I have no power to describe Gaṇeśa's own world; it has therefore been told in brief. What else do you wish to hear? Speaking thus, they praised him, the best of all astrologers. When the king rose, they quickly dismissed him in an instant. He too, the great Viṣṇu, knowing (their minds), took up his own form: four-armed, bearing conch, discus, mace and lotus, the Lord. Here the king of obstacles ever abides in both collective and individual form.

Ka said: Having spoken thus to Divodāsa, Hari, the great lord of yoga, became invisible and went again, in Buddhist form, to his own hermitage. — Clad in yellow cloth, resplendent with tusks, unsurpassed: seeing such a supreme form, the two were plunged into an ocean of bliss.

"I shall give (you) villages, grain and wealth; stay here near me, since many kinds of wonders have been seen by me in you." He sent a messenger to bring about Śiva's coming. "In Divodāsa's kingdom much increase of dharma has been effected by me." The two of them, having forgotten to perform the worship and the salutation — the Lord God said: "Choose a boon, O you of good vows." Sixteen-spoked, at the region of the throat, there and everywhere the king of obstacles, of the form of radiance, blazing, in Satyaloka according to rule.

"Neither villages nor wealth nor grain please me, since I have no craving for them. I speak to you one word; that you ought to carry out in your heart." Then the king, the scorcher of foes, gave up the royal insignia and practised austerity, having installed a most renowned Śivaliṅga in the highest palace — pleased even with śamī leaves and mandāra blossoms, O lovely one. Ka said: Hearing that speech thus, Kīrti reached the utmost joy. He has moon, sun and fire for eyes, the disc of the earth for his great belly; pervading (all) from the twenty-one heavens, having the plants for his body-hair.

"From today, O king, on the seventeenth day some supreme man (will come); whatever he says on arriving must be done without deliberation." — By his own name he gives release to men, and to those with desires the granting of desires. Awaiting the sight of that Śaṃkara, the giver of what is sought — having taken on bodily form, she said to the elephant-faced one: "What worth has a woman's word, O all-knowing one, you who are of every form?" Then by (his) command she nevertheless spoke, having gained understanding from his nearness. Kīrti said: You are partless, free of ego, free of qualities, the lord of the world.
