Beginning of chapter 36: Gṛtsamada said: On Mount Sahyādri the god dwelt together with Girijā, joined by his own hosts and by sages, in a holy field of great power. Beginning of chapter 37: Kīrti said: How was the praise made by them? Tell me that, O great sage. The sage said: Let that praise be heard, O Kīrti; listen to it attentively. Beginning of chapter 38: Kīrti said: Rightly have you told, O brahman, with reverence, the greatness of the śamī; the greatness of the mandāra too has been told, and by that my mind is satisfied. Beginning of chapter 39: The sage said: But then the king of the daityas, through pride in the boon obtained from Śiva, did not restrain himself, being simply deluded. Beginning of chapter 40: Gṛtsamada said: Then all the gods and sages went to Kedāra; they informed the lotus-born one, together with Śiva, the knower of all.

Wishing to see (him), Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, went there, accompanied by his two wives, with gods, gandharvas and kinnaras. The sage said: Emitting flames from her mouth, desiring to burn the moving and the unmoving, she cursed the gods and the sages: 'You shall become dull-witted.' Knowing the gods to be in such a state, they came near Brahmā — Pulomajā and Girijā, Chāyā too, and Kamalā too. One made muttered repetition of the name, one likewise of the mantra, one sat in the lotus posture meditating on the supreme Lord. All of them saw the god, of splendour equal to ten million suns; closing their eyes they bowed like a staff upon the ground. They said: Homage to you who have all forms, homage to the inner ruler of all; homage to you, the maker of all, the giver of all, the compassionate. At once pleased by this praise, (he said): 'So be your word.' By Sāvitrī's word the auspicious gods were born made of water. And those gods spoke for the benefit of all the worlds: whoever should worship with devotion this lord of knowledge in the fair city... The greatness of the mandāra too has been rightly set forth by me; now give me leave, I shall go to my own dwelling. And this boy has been kept alive, and taught the six-syllabled (mantra); but it cannot be uttered because of his childhood, O lord of sages. For the destruction of the daityas and for gaining the happiness of the gods' kingdom, by the Sun and by Varuṇa, and by the Moon and by Yama... How the name Ḍhuṇḍhirāja came to him in the king's courtyard — all that I shall tell, as it was heard by me from Skanda. Where creatures abide, there comes about the dissolution of sin; to rescue creatures from sin, gods and sages abide there always. Whoever imagines a difference here, that man attains the Avīci hell — he who in one place practises praise and in another blame. Beyond the qualities, consisting of knowledge, knower of the ordinance of the manifest and unmanifest, whose body is to be meditated on by sages, who does grace to all devotees. Having set (his) foot on the head, he will hold it continually; when he was driven out by him, your foot went to (his) head. He desired to conquer the earth and formerly mounted a horse, his hair bound up and his hand (ready), with glittering ear-rings. By envoys alone he brought them thus under his sway, O unassailable one. Having thus conquered the circle of the earth, he desired to conquer Śakra. He was noticed by Viṣṇu, the mighty, discus in hand, who, assuming a beautiful Mohinī form, went into his presence. Mounting an excellent aerial car, he reached Kāśī in a moment; the instant the daitya lord entered, a cry of dismay arose in the city. All of them, headed by Vāc, Indra and Agni, bowing with their heads — the gods and sages said: We gods have fallen from our station, and the sages too from their proper conduct. If the mighty one should take on an incarnation in Pārvatī's womb, then and only then would his destruction come about, not otherwise, O best of gods. Therefore let all praise that Lord who takes thought for the universe; first make that Goddess, the beloved of Bhava, gracious. The gods and sages said: We bow to the maker of obstacles, the compassionate protector of all, the cause of the whole world, the all-pervading Lord. From his mouth, his nostrils, his eyes there came forth a supreme radiance, thick with garlands of flame, as if risen up to burn the cosmic egg. To be reached by meditation, the shining-forth of consciousness, whose form is being, consciousness and bliss; the all-pervading, the cause of the world, contemplated from the beginning until now.

But having seen Śaṅkara and worshipped him, he made known his intention. Then Sadāśiva summoned the supreme sages. Homage to the destroyer of all, homage to you of endless power; homage to the awakener of all, to the vessel of all, to the beginning of everything. O sage, (give) a mantra that is easy, gracious, and bestows one's own kingdom, one that can be muttered by a child — give it to him now. Sword in hand, bow in hand, adorned with two quivers, wearing a garland made of gems, pearls and jewels, of great worth. O god, out of fear of Durāsada we are not able even to bathe. By whom was the boon given to him, by which he is lord of the world?

Jamadagni and Vasiṣṭha, and Mārkaṇḍeya and Nārada, Kapila, Pulaha, Kaṇva, Viśvāmitra, Trita, Dvita. Homage, homage to him whose form is the supreme Brahman, devoid of qualities; to him whose form is consciousness and bliss, O you who are beyond the reach even of the Vedas. The sage said: Your mind is seen to be rightly (fixed) on the lotus-feet of the elephant-faced one; therefore I shall give him my own mantra, the bestower of happiness. With a musk mark, covered with divine garments, finely jacketed, his mouth glistening with betel, accompanied by his two consorts. A wicked one has been born; from what (cause) his slaying (should come) — let this be considered. That alone by which there is happiness for the worlds is to be done by the compassionate.

They came, summoned by Śiva, and all the others wishing to see. At dawn, having chosen out an auspicious moment, they began the sacrifice. Homage to you, the resort of māyā, the immeasurable, the one beyond the qualities; to the real, to him whose form is the unreal, to the agitator of the qualities. He who is the cause of the whole world, whose name is of four syllables, the beholder of good and evil, the remover of wicked daityas. Those two by whom, through the valour of their own arms, heroes were conquered many times over, who used to go, endowed with strength, at both his sides. Ka said: Hearing that speech of his, the four-faced one said: I shall tell a means for his slaying, O gods and sages.

Then the lords of sages, being in haste, forgot the auspicious worship of Vināyaka and left Sāvitrī, who was engaged in household duties. Homage to the protector of those who come for refuge, the splitter of daityas and dānavas, homage to him of many incarnations, O you intent on protecting the universe. Of him who rescues all dharma, who does good to Divodāsa, who took the form of a brahman and dwelt in Vārāṇasī. Then again you will conquer the three worlds by force with your splendour; and your devotion to me will be all the firmer, and the remembrance of you will endure. That fourfold army, set upon the conquest of the earth, covered the sky with dust, spread out like the ocean. When harsh austerity had been practised by him for many days, the god, the husband of Ambikā, gave him endless boons.

(She) spoke, her eyes red with anger, looking at all those seated in the assembly. Sāvitrī said: "This sacrifice, begun while disregarding me, will not succeed; you ought to act here so that you are not always without remembrance (of me)." Gaṇeśa said: "Won by (your) observance, I grant what you wish." — of (him) who is worshipped even by Śiva for the destruction of all; of (him) worshipped with good devotion even by the husband of Pulomā's daughter (Indra); and those who, weaponless, folding their hands, went to him alone for refuge, and those who, being exceedingly timid, abandoned their kingdom yet protected (it) — pervading the universe, possessed of māyā, maker of the universe and remover (of it), beyond the qualities is Gaṇeśa, Śiva higher than the highest.

Then the gods, bowing, eagerly prayed aloud, (for) the Grandfather is not able to make that utterance otherwise: "They will go to their own proper form, remaining (here) by a portion" — such ones, worshipped by Agni and by Vāyu for the increase of their several qualities; worshipped by Bṛhaspati and Uśanas for their several advancement, he suddenly marched with his army to the city guarded by Śakra. Knowing the power of that wicked one's boon, the king of the gods (thought): "A boy born of his (Śiva's) fiery energy shall be (the means) for the slaying of Durāsada" — just such a boon was made for him by Śaṃkara.

(They addressed) Sāvitrī, mother of all — by the identity of ḍa and la, O auspicious one — "We shall become water-formed, taking the form of rivers and streams; they will obtain their own offices; what I have said is not otherwise. You gods, worship me here with śamī leaves." Ḍhuṇḍhi, propitiated by Śeṣa for the sake of bearing up the earth. Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Yakṣas, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Rākṣasas, sages, beasts, all the auspicious beings fixed and moving — having fled, (each) went to a cave, together with the gods and with his family. In that very moment Viṣṇu went from his place to the ocean of milk. The sage said: Having heard such words from Brahmā's mouth, the gods rejoiced; they praised her, the beloved of Bhava, Bhavānī, fond of her devotees.

When that Goddess said "So be it," they attained the form of rivers: Maheśa became (the river) by the name Veṇyā, Kṛṣṇa became the river Kṛṣṇā. By whom a śamī leaf is offered, by him the (whole) world is offered; the fruit of a hundred loads of gold is obtained — no doubt of it. They worship Viśveśa for the accomplishment of their several purposes; this Ḍhuṇḍhirāja, lord of all, whose limitless qualities have no limit. Placing his head in Lakṣmī's lap, Madhusūdana lay down; abandoning the peak of Kailāsa, the trident-bearer went to Kāśī. The divine sages said: We bow to you, sole cause of the world, higher than the high, the wondrous power of the universe, of inconceivable form, praised by all the thirty (gods), worthy of all worship, threefold in quality, mistress of the qualities.

But when he is worshipped with devotion with a śamī leaf, sincerely — the clever four-faced one went along with him. Whatever place he goes to, abandoning (the last), there and there that king of the demons (is). — (We bow to) you, bearer of the earth, having the form of the earth, being the support of things fixed and moving, the essence of the three worlds, being the origin of the three qualities, whose body is the triple Veda, whose form is the thirty gods.

There obstacles arise in just this way, as formerly for Śaṃkara: at the slaying of the three cities obstacles arose because of his not having worshipped him. They too, bowing and praising the elephant-faced one, entreated: "Forgive our offence, O god, (committed) through recourse to delusion of mind. A son shall be yours, sharer of the kingdom, crusher of enemies." Kīrti said: "I have heard, O brahmin, the whole greatness that rests on Ḍhuṇḍhirāja." He indeed installs his own mighty envoy, his dearest friend. Thus having conquered the gods, the greatly strong one, out of sheer pride — We bow, O goddess, to you the giver of boons, the bewilderer of Viṣṇu, the giver of station to the gods, destroyer of devotees' distress, giver of every object, maker of the three worlds, protectress of all things.

What was his prowess? By whom was his name given? By whom was he worshipped of old?" An incarnation by māyā went to king Divodāsa in order to delude him, as Viśveśvara Hara was brought to Avimukta. "What is to be done by us, or by the gods who have the form of water? To whose refuge shall we go, O god, apart from you, O lotus-born?" The Lord, together with his wife, worships (him) with devotion even now; all the gods (are) each in his own station. Then, (the image) born of the mandāra tree — he, with tapas grown mature, then generated the creatures born of union: twenty-one thousand egg-born and sweat-born beings then. By her a hand was placed upon her own head, and by that, in that very instant, the demon whose evil doings brought about (his) end was reduced to ashes. (I praise him) with one tusk, with two tusks, three-eyed, ten-handed, with a trunk-staff for a face, destroyer of obstacles, remover of sin.

Hearing their words, Ka (said) "Do not fear"; he said to them: "I shall sacrifice in such a way that all shall be auspicious." Having made an image of Gaṇeśa, they worshipped it with śamī leaves; they attained joy, and with their own wives obtained the most excellent desires. And the sprout-born are just as many; human birth among these is hard to get, and one obtains it by merit, and brahminhood by much merit. Mukunda too stayed there, and the city became renowned by his name. (I praise him who) at once gives the highest success to men who perform the observances, ever the boon-giver of his devotees, who effects creation, maintenance and dissolution, without beginning, middle or end, the origin of beings and the increaser of beings.

What indeed is unattainable for devotees when the elephant-faced one is well pleased? All of you, practise devotion to him; he will do everything dear to you. Brahmā, having performed very great austerity for twelve years and having made Vighneśa gracious, again had the sacrifice performed. If that is well protected by the ordering of dharma and adharma, (he) gives that highest station, going to which one does not return. That Mohinī gives all desires to men according to their devotion. Dwelling there, out of pride Durāsada rules the three worlds. (I praise) the lord of the three worlds, chief of the gods, crusher of wicked demons, with long ears and mighty splendour, wearing serpents as ornaments, the auspicious one.

"I too shall propitiate Vināyaka, lord of the world, the god without beginning or end, the cause of all causes." He too worshipped with supreme reverence, in many ways with śamī leaves, the boon-giving image of the King of Obstacles made of mandāra wood. Otherwise, among the eighty-four lakhs of fallen births, men of evil conduct fall into the torments of Yama. Out of pride he said to his ministers: "How is it that the three worlds have been overrun by me, by my own valour, conquering the enemies of the demons?" Having thus praised that god Gaṇeśa, giver of all attainments, they heard a voice from the sky: "Let there be no fever of mind for you."

Being thus addressed, they went to a distant, auspicious country, Karṇāṭaka; they were told to remain at the root of a mandāra tree and meditate on Vighneśa. (They worshipped) with golden leaves, with dūrvā grass, with mandāra and ketaka flowers, and with white dūrvā shoots, (the image) that gives the fruit of every desire. Then, when their karma is exhausted, after a long time they come again to the world of death, one-eyed, hunchbacked, poor. Then his ministers said: "Avimukta has not been conquered by you; it is the tenth division, and there is nothing anywhere equal to it." "I shall slay the terrible, mighty Durāsada." Having heard the voice from the sky, they came again to Śaṃkara; and seeing him fixed in meditation, they bowed and spoke to Pārvatī.

It was installed formerly by Rāma under the name Vakratuṇḍa, by whose boons Rāma became victorious, having slain the bulls among Rākṣasas. Gṛtsamada said: Thus, O mother, the greatness has been described to you in part, O auspicious one; (the greatness) of the mandāra and of the śamī, which destroys sin by the mere hearing (of it). Then, out of compassion for these, Brahmā, Īśāna and the other gods, and the greatly blessed sages, made various sacred fords, where Śaṃkara abides and is served even by all the gods. "So long as that city is not conquered, so long is your manhood in vain." The gods said: We do not know by whom this voice from the sky was uttered, O auspicious one; since Hara is fixed in meditation, what are we to do, O mistress of all?

Then the Lord of the Universe fashioned (a city) most excellent of all, possessed of all virtues, auspicious, granting enjoyment and liberation, granting release to those who meditate on it and know it. Some woman then closed her eyes and merely recited hymns; though much time passed, Vināyaka was not pleased. What was well done by one practising austerity becomes liberating by mere bathing; on seeing which, from the shaking of Śiva's neck a jewel (fell) from his earring. All except Jaigīṣavya, the renunciant of the sacred field, O auspicious one — then he, hard to approach and possessed by delusion, broke the image. He appeared before them, shining with four beautiful arms, wearing crown and armlets, adorned with necklace and earrings. Vināyaka is of the nature of power, he is the cause of the world too; even at the dissolution Kāśī is held by him on the tip of his trident. With long ears, shining cheeks, adorned with a pair of tusks, accompanied by Siddhi and Buddhi, with the mouse as his vehicle, clad in yellow. This one alone became fivefold, out of desire to favour the worlds; whatever form a devotee meditates on, that form is at once assumed by him. In just this way the Mother of the world praised the elephant-faced one: that which is without qualities, without form, unmanifest, all-pervading, supreme.

They praised (him), making a cup of their hands — the great vow, O gentle one — their faces exceedingly glad, filled with the highest bliss. He goes to the twenty-one hells for many years; hence the son of Bhasmāsura is known by the name Durāsada. That which today has been seen in embodied shape in the form of Vināyaka has descended in my house to slay demons in their multitudes.
