The head of Ambhāsura — that went to its own house. Bhramarā's friend saw it and informed her. "He at the sight of whom Time itself trembled — how has he met his death?" Wailing thus, wretched, like a milch cow that has lost her calf. Warriors were bewildered when they saw her in such a state, come into the king's palace; in their minds they longed for her embrace and her kiss. Bowing to her with great devotion, the king spoke with folded hands: my kingdom, birth, parents, wealth, sight, learning, austerity. "Abandoning all hope of life, I performed austerity for your sake; with extreme hardship you were obtained, and the Lord knows those hardships." "Do not break his sleep so suddenly — you are his true mother." Some, out of compassion, set their minds on lifting up the boy. And the sages and the world-guardians (praised) with devotion the god Vināyaka: "You are the master of gods, of men, of serpents and of demons. To him endowed with immeasurable illusion, to his valour, to the wielder of illusion, O illusory one, to the bewilderer, to the remover of immeasurable illusion, to the great resort of illusion — homage, homage to you. If he is not a god, how were five great demons, unbearable to the gods, unconquerable by Indra and Viṣṇu, mighty in strength, slain?" "Let him take him to his own house and worship him and feed him too." But the townsfolk are of three kinds, by the qualities of rajas, sattva and tamas. "I am a child, a sage's son; what indeed will be the fruit of worshipping me? I do not know it, for you who are incurring expense." With devotion they made archways, and wonderful splendours of mirrors, and very costly vessels, and perfumes and sandal-paste. Once he went out to beg but was refused at house after house, by people who were holding a great festival for Vināyaka's sake. And the rice that was cooked was stale, with more water than grains; each day he eats a fistful of flour cooked in a leaf-cup. Just as he was watching the courtesans (dance), the two of them arrived at that lovely assembly from the world of the gods — Sanaka and Sanandana. "In his house he performs many wonders, he of marvellous prowess; having heard of his exploit, we two have come here to see him." "Where has your knowledge gone, you two sages who have toiled in vain? Having left heaven, how have you come here like ordinary folk?" In a moment the two regained their senses and bowed to the Lord of the world. Then the sage said to the god: since you are called the protector of the wretched. He ate it with the greatest respect as though it were well-cooked food; drinking water with every mouthful, he ate all the more heartily. "And at the end grant me liberation, by which one does not return again; my mind takes no delight in the pleasure of worldly existence, O Vināyaka." In house after house, in the king's house, and in the houses of all the ministers, the people then searched for the son of Kaśyapa. "The weariness born of wandering is gone, now that I have seen your lotus feet." "Come, come to our house to eat, together with the troops of boys." They gave him oil-rubbing, bathing, worship and food; thus all rejoiced, together with the king of Kāśī. Somewhere (they saw) him watching a dance, surrounded by troops of courtesans; somewhere playing at dice, and somewhere (playing) by force of wit. And the two saw the form of Vināyaka, and again him of universal form; they saw every single thing as consisting of Vināyaka. "You create this universe and you alone withdraw it, O sinless one; formless, you are (present) in many forms, endowed with the power of manifold illusion." And the two gave it a name: "This Vināyaka is the granter of boons"; and the lake was made by them "Gaṇeśa's pool." Then all of them entered the city with glad hearts. Thus the whole play of Vināyaka has been told to you. Whether through pride, or carelessly, or even out of shame, or for another's sake — great wealth, great riches, and jewels of many kinds.

She was asleep on heated gold; rising, she came to the courtyard, and the very moment she saw her grandson's head she fainted and fell to the ground. "He must be a god, this one who plays so lightly among the children" — reasoning thus, the two then came for an audience with the king. That hall was lit up by the radiance of those two, as if by sun and fire; the king rose at once from his seat on seeing them. All the people asked: "Has Vināyaka been seen anywhere?" "Not thus, not thus," says scripture — of whom is he an object of sight? "You alone are the five elements, the yakṣas, gandharvas and rākṣasas; who could be capable of praising you, whose very form is the moving and the unmoving?"

Beating her own breast with both hands, filled with sorrow, her ornaments falling, worn out, like a lotus plant crushed by an elephant. The king too went to his throne and spoke to them all: "Let them state what the business is; it shall come to fulfilment for you." Standing firm, setting (himself) at the lotus feet, he prostrated to the two with the eight limbs; then with folded hands he said, "Today my lineage is blessed." "It may be that he was not seen by us" — so the people said there; those who were at the city's edge heard it from the people's talk. "Not thus, not thus," scripture keeps saying, from ignorance of your form; we two, bewildered, are unable to know your highest form.

Her bangles broken, her bodice torn, slender-waisted, her large limbs now seen now unseen, she rolled on the ground in distress, overwhelmed. "For what purpose have you townsmen come here so early in the morning?" They said: "It is no secret, apart from a word of what we ourselves desire: the kingdom, and knowledge, and the body, and wife and children and the rest." Having said this, taking the two by the hand and seating them on his own seat. And he came to Śukla's house; then they went to that house, and did not see him, and asked; and he said, "He has gone from here." "We two do not know the greatness of you of many forms, O mighty one; we have now accomplished our purpose, O Lord, by the sight of your feet."

Though restrained by her friends, her brothers and her kinsfolk — she, awakening after three muhūrtas, began to say something. "This Vināyaka, the sage's son, was indeed brought here by you; he was never in servitude to us in anything, anywhere, at any time." He worshipped (them) with devotion with the sixteen services, and made the two rest with foot-massage and the like. But that boy, made of illusion, eager to deceive people, sent the children away and afterwards came in by the door and slept. "By your various descents you take away the burden of the earth, by your endless power." Ka said: Hearing the praise of those two thus, he spoke to them both with affection.

He at whose mere roar heaven and earth shook violently — how has he fallen, and where, and by whom was my son slain? And poison turns to nectar, while nectar becomes another poison, for one who has devotion to him, whether he be a god or a man. The two of them said: "He has attained all his desires, he has the nature of the supreme brahman; the Lord who descends in play is your son, the son of Kaśyapa." Raising him up and holding him by the hand: "Go — to our auspicious shelter; make everything that we have prepared for your sake bear fruit." Having made an incomparable temple set with jewels and gold, the two of them, Sanaka and Sanandana, installed (him) there.

Her women friends restrained her as she lamented thus: "It has never been seen, friend, that anyone dies along with the dead. The wicked put the gods to the test, while the meritorious worship them; some revile him and some praise him. Otherwise, what purpose have we in abandoning Indra's abode? He in whose house stands the wish-granting tree — what else will he beg for?" By excessive grief, grief (and fire?) is gained by foolish creatures. If out of affection you grieve, my son, then do what is good for him. Whatever a man's nature is, so does he behave; sandalwood, though it be ground, does not give up its own fragrance. "Having bowed to his lotus feet, let us two go to our own place, O king." Hearing the words of those two who had come thus, Vināyaka — "You do not even drink water; where was there food? How was it eaten by you, O Lord?" Gaṇeśa said: "My belly is quite full, and I have not the strength to go." A tear fallen from friends, should it fall into the mouth of the dead man, burns him; therefore it is not to be shed — so say the supreme seers. "Let him be led quickly, being honoured, for a meal and for one dear (to us)." "He is not to be led for the sake of a test — (they are) my father and my mother." The king, bent on gentle jest, showed him to those two: "This is the god who has come, for the sight of whom you two were eager." The provisions gathered for Vakeśī's sake, of many kinds, went to waste; the wicked, the hypocritical, those devoid of devotion, themselves ate them. Having seen and fully worshipped the Lord of gods, they vanished on that very spot in an instant; and those two, filled with astonishment, went to the highest heaven.

Hearing that speech thus, she said angrily to her friend: "Let him be set on the head with care, O greatly blessed friend! How can I tell men, 'Lead him and worship him'? Seeing his firm power, my devotion stands out. Since he has come, do what must be done as you please." But those two sages, looking at him, then said to each other... Those who were devotees stood without food, intent on meditation. Thus, when in all the worlds (people) were known to be fixed in meditation, he — and the king of Kāśī too, with his ministers and his subjects, (worshipped) him with various goods, with ornaments, and with garments both fine and coarse.

"I shall bring the head of Aditi's son along with him, and I shall have him burnt; therefore let him be placed in oil. If he is not (dealt with), where is my city then, and where are you, and where am I?" Hearing the king's words, the townsmen spoke again: "Surely Kaśyapa, best of sages, has been corrupted by him, who, having become his son, utterly abandoned his own conduct." That rākṣasī, joined with the chief of the rākṣasas, came to the king's city to kill that Vināyaka, concealing her own form, like a moth (approaching) close to fire. "As you say, good sir, so it is and not otherwise; bring about that accomplishment of our purpose, O lord of men." "For him there is no consideration of touched and untouched, nor any rule of what may and may not be eaten; in seeing him and in touching him there would surely be great fault." Somewhere lying on a couch, somewhere intent on muttered prayer, somewhere delighting in giving, somewhere eager for food. He worshipped with supreme devotion, together with brahmins, according to the mantras; and he honoured the brahmins with garments, ornaments and gold.

She came in Aditi's form, lighting up the ten directions, an abode of surpassing beauty, resplendent with every ornament. "Let us take this boy to our own house and worship him as he deserves." Meanwhile the boy said to those seated in the assembly: "How is it that, abandoning your own observances, you are staying in a kṣatriya's house?" "But for us who stand in our own duty, what harm comes from seeing him?" Somewhere he has pupils recite the Veda with its ancillaries and its meaning; somewhere he expounds a treatise, and somewhere he recites himself. Having received the blessings, he came back to the city; and just so those subjects worshipped that Vināyaka.

(She had) teeth like pomegranate seeds, lips like bimba fruit, a slender waist, gleaming lotus eyes, breasts glistening with strings of pearls. Knowing what was within them, the witness of all, the teacher of the world — Vināyaka said: "For what purpose do you, who are so very great, entreat me?" The god, then standing near the king, heard that speech, and, knower of speech, spoke words like a second Vācaspati. Thus, gone into many houses in many forms, he shone; each thought, "He came to our house first." Just so, having honoured the brahmins, they received the highest blessings. Then the subjects worshipped that Vināyaka according to their means.

Then that tiger among kings, urged by firm devotion, (offered) the five nectars, cooked food, a savoury dish, milk-rice and boiled rice; and everything else that was tasty they ate as they pleased. Vināyaka went to the house of one who had no contact with metals, taking up with ten arms rice softened with water.

"Stay; let my word be heard," he said to those two; and with devotion he entreated: "Having bathed and eaten, let (me) be followed." Thus, while the brahmins, the gods, the king of Kāśī and the friends were pronouncing blessings, the king of Kāśī, seated in the assembly, asked. Having eaten, having shed his weariness, satisfied, he destroyed poverty too; and a house better than Indra's city was given to Śukla.

"By great good fortune have you, mother of the gods, been seen by me; by Vināyaka's grace — how else could there be a sight of you?" Ka said: Hearing Vināyaka's words, the guild-chiefs sang out again: "When this wedding is accomplished you will not stay a moment." Hearing his request, the two bulls among sages said: "We do not eat royal food; therefore let us go." (The king was) deluded by the illusion of the sage's son, who had many forms. The king said: "Plainly Vināyaka has gone to eat in many houses." And such riches were given as exist with the lord of Alakā; and such a form was given as is not (even) in Makaradhvaja.

But to the queen speaking thus, she, her throat full of tears, spoke these words. Aditi said: "Where is my boy, who was placed (here) for many days?" "By the king's favour you have been seen; do not make (my) devotion fruitless — you whose desires are already fulfilled, who bring about creation, maintenance and end." Having obtained his leave, the two then went to Maṇikarṇī. Vināyaka, followed by all the boys, taking joyful delight. "He is here beside me too — then who is it that eats in house after house?" And somewhere Vināyaka goes mounted on a palanquin to eat. "And such knowledge was given to him as is not in the four-faced one. What is the reason here, O brahmin? That you ought to explain to me."

You know the nature of women, whose minds are confused by illusion — of you who dwell within all, who fully know all the movements of the mind, who are able to act, or to act otherwise, or not to act at all." Having bathed, he went, honoured, to Śukla's house, knowing his devotion — as a cow runs to her calf, as a mother to a crying child. Somewhere he goes mounted on an elephant, and somewhere mounted on a horse; so, while all the worlds were busy with worship of the boy — Ka said: "Rightly have you asked, Vyāsa, since the tale of the Supreme Lord, heard with devotion, purifies the questioner, the hearers and the speaker."

"For him who is consciousness and bliss there is no need at all of our worship; do not make vain the scripture (which says), 'the god loves devotion'." As Kṛṣṇa (protected) Draupadī, brought into the hall, who had come for refuge — seeing (this), the two, husband and wife, fell at the god's feet. Then those two went to the city; there and there they saw Vināyaka having eaten; turning back, they came together. Hearing his word thus, she, respectful and agitated, the queen, urged messengers on to search for that boy. Hearing their speech thus, Vināyaka then said to them: "If your devotion is such, then I shall go at the king's command." Shedding tears of joy, with a voice choked in speech, they joyfully embraced the god and danced, overwhelmed with delight. In whatever house those two went, there was Vināyaka. Having completed all their daily duties, they went about for alms. He is all-knowing, all-seeing, all-pervading, knower of every mind; the god is pleased by devotion alone, for the inner feeling is the cause of his pleasure.

Others told the king of Kāśī that Kaśyapa's wife had come. He, having bathed and come home, was delighted at seeing her. Hearing that speech thus, all of them went to their own houses; some made pavilions, and some cloth-houses. Those two did not find what should be done; they dwelt as though beyond the body. Their limbs bristling with horripilation, the two let flow a stream of tears. (They saw him) lying on a divine bed and eating fruits, and chewing betel, somewhere smeared with perfumes and the like. A palāśa leaf brought with devotion, and water, and a lovely flower — with just that he is well pleased, and he gives his very self.

Somewhere praised by devotees, somewhere praising the Lord of the world; somewhere showing his own majesty many times over out of devotion. She is poor, devoted to knowledge, her husband her very life, faithful to her husband. In her house what is to be seen is plainly (the sky) marked with stars. Knowing that intention of his, Vināyaka, god of gods, (said): 'Here in the city there is a pure, spotless brahmin named Śukla; let us two go to eat in his house.' Having said this, they went there.

"Sent by all the boys, your mother has come." Then she embraced the boy, and, filled with tears, spoke with joy: "What is pervaded by the radiance of his body, though it is being seen, is not seen." Pleased by that event, she who makes the beauty of the house (said): "What is given with hypocrisy and without faith becomes poison." (She offered) a large quantity of dry boiled rice, sun-dried, made of many grains. Having said this, the two came out and, seeing Vināyaka before them, they took on the movement of animals, and even from there they beheld him.

"You have stayed here a long time, abandoning me, cruel one! Burning with separation from you I have come, leaving everything." He became pleased with her contentment, and with her modesty and service. Firm in himself, devoted to knowledge, he remains without taking food. The sage's wife, filled with shyness, set (it) before him; and seeing all the oil, the boys laughed at him. In the eastern and in the western direction these two (looked for) him alone all around; below and above they saw Vināyaka, present everywhere.

"Without you a moment became for me like an age and an aeon." With such light words that woman (spoke) with wicked intent. Pleased with what he had obtained, he came to his wife and said this: "Listen, wife: in the city I was turned away at house after house." Then the whole dish of boiled rice was thrown down by that sage; its water flowed in all directions and the boy could not stop it. Then those two, greatly amazed, meditated on Śambhu and on Viṣṇu; and they saw in the pool both that one and that one, and Vināyaka.

Out of the force of her excessive love she held him at her hip. He too, knowing that behaviour of hers, reflecting on her offence (thought): "That Vināyaka will come to receive the offering, for the worship—he who has descended to the sage's house, intent on removing the burden of the earth." Then he became ten-armed and ate the boiled rice with them. The people saw the marvel and laughed, clapping their hands. Closing their eyes, the two best of sages (saw) him alone within; and opening their eyes too, they saw him in their own hearts.

With a hidden purpose he said to her: "What did you take from me before?" While he was speaking thus, she then gave him a laḍḍuka. "If he will come to the house, make an effort for the worship." She said: "Setting aside a great worship—how is there even food in your house?" "Is this not cooked in an unprecedented way, with water knee-deep?"—so the boys said, and ate it as tasty, like milk-rice. "How would he come to the house of you who own nothing?" "Perfume and flowers, stale, cooked bulbs and fruit, O sage." And those who ate together with him attained equality with the gods; the others, who had laughed with bared teeth, grieved afterwards. Whatever is done will turn out well, ill-done though it be, and little though it be—ah! Or what need has he of your house, lord?" There was a great uproar in the city: "Where is Vināyaka?"
