Chapter 1. The Śrī Gaṇeśa Purāṇa — latter half (Krīḍākhaṇḍa, part 1). Homage to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Homage to the two feet of Śrī Mahāsiddhi, Mahābuddhi, Lakṣa, Lābha, Nagnabhairava, the king. Homage to all the Gāṇeśa teachers. The sages said: A narration well told has been told by you, O Sūta of great mind; it has been heard by us reverently, and we have not become sated. — Beginning of chapter 2: Vyāsa said: How, O Brahmā, and where did those two carry out (their) observance? Tell all that at length to me, who ask reverently. — Beginning of chapter 3: Ka (Brahmā) said: Then, rising at dawn, having meditated on the guru and honoured him, having called to mind and bowed to all the gods, the two went in the south-western direction. — Beginning of chapter 4: Vyāsa said: The deeds of Devāntaka have been heard with devotion from your mouth; now tell me, O brahmin, the doings of Narāntaka. — Beginning of chapter 5: Brahmā said: My own mind-born son Kaśyapa, of surpassing intelligence, meritorious, of righteous conduct, an ascetic, with his senses subdued.

Just as a creature is not sated though eating food day after day (so are we); tell some other story by which we may be satisfied. His childhood deeds and his many kinds of play too — hearing them from the lotus of your mouth, the mind will come to contentment. In the Dvāpara age he was red in colour, mounted on a mouse, four-armed, renowned as 'Elephant-faced', worshipped by gods and men. Seeing (him) with arms reaching to the knees and long eyes, his father said: Today I have become free of debt; today my austerity is blessed. Then those two grew up, resembling Meru and Mandāra, like two palm trees rooted in a thicket, like bamboo shoots, by force. The enemy of Kāma (Śiva) said to the two sons: Let (her/it) be propitiated by this; and placing his hand of protection on (their) head(s) he prescribed the observance. Brahmā said: Well have you asked, O Vyāsa; I shall now tell you everything. Those two, Devāntaka and Narāntaka, performed the observance. At dawn they worshipped Śambhu with flowers and sprouts, there in that penance-grove, my dear, by the wondrous ardour of those two. Whoever was without wealth (they made) rich in wealth, and the rich man poor. Hearing this speech of theirs, the lord of Umā said: You two shall obtain (it), and Antaka too shall have fear from you two. Śambhu placed his lotus-hand of protection upon the heads of those two. Having relieved themselves, and having cleansed teeth and tongue, having bathed and performed the twilight worship, they worshipped these deities. Leaping up again and again and suddenly falling down — from that leaping the wombs of women and great trees fell. (Set) all your own feet wherever you may stand; otherwise, abandoning everything, you will go to a needless death. Come face to face, O Śakra, together with all the hosts of gods; the best of heroes does not slay one who flees without facing him. Then countless daityas and dānavas came from the earth and from (all) the directions; they performed (worship) with various substances and with waters brought from many holy fords. Ka (Brahmā) said: Listen attentively, O brahmin, O son of Satyavatī; I shall now tell that, seeing your utmost reverence. With minds overcome by terror they did not perform austerity. Then Narāntaka (sent) the daityas out of a desire to conquer the Nāga world; and Devāntaka sent (for) that which was hard to obtain on earth. Thus the two made the sovereignty of the three worlds with the greatest delight. Exceedingly compassionate in the world, a crusher of sorrow and grief, with eyes closed he knows the present, the past and the future. Therefore I say: ask fully whatever is in your mind. Aditi said: The hosts of gods beginning with Indra have come to sonship with him. The five-syllabled (formula), ending in the dative, furnished with the sprout of the syllable Oṃ, ending in 'namaḥ', together with the meditation, joined with the nyāsa and the deity. With a body more beautiful than Kāma's, accompanied by Siddhi and Buddhi, bearing a pearl garland and an axe, born of a cloud-blossom(?); assuming many forms, eternal, attainable by yoga, accomplisher of all aims — now, in a gentle form, grant a boon, O Vināyaka.

Sūta said: The Upāsanākhaṇḍa has been told; (now) I shall tell you the Krīḍākhaṇḍa — how the slaying of the various daityas was done by Gaṇeśa. Taking the command of their father, the two went to a dense forest, having gone where it was full of many trees and creepers of the wind(?). Having worshipped the brahmins with devotion, the two gave wealth and clothing; seeing the clarified butter that stood in a bronze vessel, they gave it to a brahmin. Narāntaka, going to the earth accompanied by many hosts of daityas, made slaughter of kings and killed some. By his mind the maker of creation and destruction, gone to the far shore of the Vedānta, knowing the truth of the meaning of all scriptures, regarding clod, stone and gold as equal.

And the protection of the good, of the twice-born and of cows, with the utmost reverence — that I shall fully declare; let it be heard with a steady mind. (A place) provided with wells and pools, adorned with flowers and sprouts, with a great cavernous mountain and abounding in many rocks. Having looked at the south, and at a spotless mirror, and having put on garments, those two took counsel. Seeing many kings slain, all went to him for refuge; whatever army it saw, that went off in the ten directions. Aditi, who was his eldest wife, most dear by name, complete in all auspicious marks, was without equal in heaven.

The sages said: The more that Purāṇa is told, the more does the desire to hear increase; therefore let it be told fully, by which the whole world may at once be released from the ocean of transmigration. Standing there, both these two began a great austerity; and both stood there on a single thumb with steady mind. The elder said: By the boon-giving of the great Lord I shall conquer the heavenly worlds; you conquer the world of mortals and the netherworld by his grace. As ignorance (is dispelled) by knowledge, as darkness at sunrise, so Narāntaka brought the whole circle of the earth under his sway. To reduce the three worlds to ashes by the ardour of her wifely fidelity — she whose virtues Śeṣa is unable to tell with his thousand mouths.

Sūta said: What was formerly spoken by Brahmā to Vyāsa of measureless splendour, and by Bhṛgu to Somakānta — that very thing I tell you. The two, muttering the auspicious five-syllabled science declared by Nārada, meditating on the god Śaṃkara for a thousand years. Ka (Brahmā) said: Having thus made their resolve and having looked for an auspicious day, one went to the world of heaven, equal in speed to the rush of the wind. But those who went to him for refuge remained in their positions by belonging to him; those who were slain — their sons were installed and made tributaries. She whom the eight Nāyikās always serve for the obtaining of virtues; she, the sinless one, gave birth to the throngs of gods beginning with Śakra.

Vyāsa said: O lotus-born, tell, O mighty one, the auspicious deeds of Gaṇeśa — what form the Lord assumed and what he did. Fasting, living on air, for two thousand autumns; for a thousand years the two chewed fallen leaves. He went to Amarāvatī and there broke up the circle of pleasure-groves; girding up his loins the mighty one stood before Śakra. Those kings who were ready for battle became doers of service; in their places he installed daityas approved by himself. She, being of the form of the root Nature, took on such a form; once, delighted, she said to her delighted husband:

Let it be uttered by you, O brahmin, out of compassion, at my word; hearing this Upāsanākhaṇḍa I do not reach satiety. Thus ten thousand years passed for the two as they muttered (the formula); and when their great austerity had grown, then by their ardour a great uproar arose among the gods running about violently: 'Who is this, who is this? How has he come suddenly into Indra's presence?' He protected the earth girdled by the ocean. Gods, dānavas and kinnaras, scorched by the weight of terror. 'Master, I wish to make a request; show favour and tell me that.'

The sages went to mountain caves, bereft of sacrifice and of Vedic recitation; through the fault of abandoning the Veda, (they) practised the Vedic texts (only) with the mind. Apart from her husband there is no other recourse for good women, O lord. Kashyapa said: Rightly have you spoken, gracious lady, who bring me delight, O faultless one.

Suta said: Having heard the various questions, the lotus-seated one spoke a manifold divine narrative to Vyasa, who was enquiring. Lions, elephants and the rest, natural enemies, became wholly free of enmity. Thus the five-faced, three-eyed one was pleased by that austerity. The whole earth shook, with its mountains, forests and mines. By the radiance of his body those best of gods turned dark. He dispatched very strong ones, skilled in various magic arts. They, in the form of Tarkshya (Garuda), went and devoured the foremost serpents. The Supreme Self, consciousness-and-bliss, the Lord who is higher than the highest — when I obtain him as my own son, then my mind will be steady.

Brahma said: Well have you asked, Vyasa, giver of joy to the heart; the speaker's delight increases when the hearer is attentive, O lord. Ten-armed, with limbs (clad) otherwise, bearing tiger- and elephant-hide and a trident, carrying the Ganga on his head and a drum in his right hand. As a man overcome by disease at once turns pale, so at the sight of him all the gods turned pale. Countless were devoured by them; then the remainder went forth. Even what should not be said becomes speakable by me to you of holy fame; the power (of speech) is greater — as the speaker's is, so let it be told to the hearer. Girt with a garland of serpents, his neck bright with a garland of severed heads, mounted on the bull, the blue-throated one, the sky lit up by his radiance. Indra too became agitated and pale then, O sage; some fled to the ten directions, and some stood armed. Taking up many lovely divine garments, he, giving all of them, made peace with the demons. The sage said: Well spoken, greatly fortunate one — a wholly satisfying speech, like water to one tormented by thirst and food to one who is hungry.

Now I shall relate to you the whole story of Ganesha. Having made various incarnations, that all-pervading one removed the burden of the earth. Adorned with many ornaments, white-limbed, moon-crested — seeing that god in such a form, the two attained the highest joy. Some, the lowest of the gods, being utterly irresolute, went to him for refuge. Then Indra, thunderbolt in hand, mounted the four-tusked (elephant). He accepted the command uttered by Narantaka; the thousand-headed one took upon himself the yearly tribute. Thus my speech has come about, O goddess, giving you great satisfaction. Without merit, how would the Supreme Self come to be one's own son?

Having slain daityas of many kinds, he established the gods in their own place; devoted to protecting the good, he is able to uproot the wicked. Afterwards the two danced, and then prostrated themselves with the eight limbs; with palms joined they addressed that god of gods. He roared most terribly, and the three worlds shook. "What are you looking at?" he said to those foremost gods standing armed. Even so the daitya, having come there, installed that bull among daityas, together with many daityas, as overseer of all in the netherworld. I shall tell the means for that; hold it firm in your heart, beloved. He who is beyond the range of the Vedas, beyond the range of Brahma and the rest —

Hear, sage, the ancient tale that rests on the account of Ganesha, told by him whose seat-cushion is (Shesha) [Vishnu], granting all desires by the mere hearing. Blessed are we two, blessed our parents, our birth as gods, our eyes, our austerity; blessed our lineage and our bodies, since Maheshvara has been seen. Where has (his) manliness gone, now that the demon has come here? Then they went forward, exerting themselves for battle. And Narantaka commanded him who stood there: "The moment I see any change in the serpents, at that very moment for us..." He is without qualities, without ego, without striving, without alternatives — he who is the object of maya, the dancer of maya, the deluder of the magician.

Vishnu said: In age after age Ganesha has a different name, a different mount, different deeds, different qualities, and destroys different daityas. He is beyond the reach of Vedanta, unattainable, from whom words turn back; there scripture is blunted, and the six systems, and the mind. Seeing the gods eager for battle, Devantaka said to Hari: "Why do you trouble yourself, Shakra? Consider my boons. Announce it through a messenger: we shall slay all the serpents." Thus having instructed Narantaka, all those daityas... Though beyond maya, he is the support of maya, transcending causation; he spreads out maya and is the cause of effect and cause.

Mounted on a lion, ten-armed, named Vinayaka in the Krita age, of the form of splendour, of great body, granting boons to all, self-controlled. Even one with a thousand mouths is not able to praise him; Sanaka and the rest are not able — he is maker, protector and destroyer of the whole world. Antaka, terrified with fear, took to flight and went off. I consider your thunderbolt to be like a blade of grass, by Shankara's command. Going, they told the whole matter that had happened in the world of the dead; Narantaka constantly sent (word) of what arose in the world of death and the netherworld. How would he come to have form without ritual observance, beloved? Aditi said: On whom should the meditation be, and how is the observance now to be done by me?

In the Treta age he rides a peacock, is six-armed and white in hue, and is famed in the three worlds by the name Mayureshvara. Let my word be heard, Shakra: let it be given to me by conciliation alone." (They told) Devantaka the whole account of what had been done. Ka said: Hearing this speech of Andhaka, the two then said... And from Shakra's mouth a mighty fire went forth outside, as happens when water falls into very hot oil. Bhrigu said: Just so, when the question was put, the four-faced one told Vyasa the tale which, with the greatest love, I tell to you. She reverently worshipped her own husband Kashyapa, and taking his permission went to the forest for austerity.

With a voice choked with joy, Devantaka and Narantaka (said): "If you are pleased, lord of gods, lord of all, ruler of the world..." Then great Indra, filled with rage, said to him: "How many demons like you have I not slain!" Ka said: In what form were those two hard-to-conquer ones, proud of their boon, killed? By which incarnation, sage, by which weapon and by which missile? Bathed, in pure garments, they meditate with steady mind on Vinayaka, the god of gods, having performed the nyasa according to rule.

There was no such woman among the apsarases, nor even among the eight chief heroines — she by whose garment the moon was outdone, and out of anxiety went to waning. And from men, serpents, gandharvas, apsarases and kinnaras, and from every weapon and missile, and from wild and village beasts too — (grant immunity). In a compound where another word is principal, you are strong in name... Then Shakra struck him with the thunderbolt with a firm fist. She murmured the supreme mantra, remembering Vinayaka, with a mind fixed on nothing else, longing for direct vision.

Lighting up the surface of the earth with many divine ornaments, as the vault of the sky shines with strings of stars. And from planets, stars and spirits, from demons and from gods; neither by day nor by night; nor even from worms and insects. That thunderbolt was split a hundredfold, like an unbaked pot falling. Devantaka, with his body-hair unruffled, stood undisturbed in battle. Without food, living on air, intent on muttering and meditation — by the power of her austerity living beings became free of enmity.

Once she became pregnant, Sharada, with eyes like autumn lotuses, in the autumn month, beautiful with the autumn moon. "And may there never be death for us two, by your grace, lord of the world; grant us sovereignty over the three worlds, and devotion at your feet." Then he struck that best of gods on the back with his fist, and by that he fell to the ground like a tree struck by the wind. All the deities were assailed. "What is she going to accomplish?" — thus for a hundred years that Aditi performed supreme austerity.

By the radiance of her body nothing at all could be discerned. He fulfils the pregnancy-longings, whatever that good woman desires. Ka said: Then the trident-bearer, the bull-bannered one, pleased with the austerity of those two devotees, having heard all their boon-requests, spoke to them. Realizing his prowess, the slayer of Bala fell; he ran swiftly behind, as a lion after herds of deer. Seeing her manifold hardships, the god Vinayaka — and such steadfastness in a woman's condition — Vinayaka appeared.

Thus in the ninth month she bore twin sons, both exceedingly lovely, delighting the hearts of both (parents). Shiva said: All that is wished and desired shall be so, not otherwise: fearlessness from every quarter, deathlessness, and sovereignty in the three worlds. Opening his terrible mouth he said to him as he fled: "Why do you run away now? Where has your bragging gone?" Before her was a mass of splendour with the brilliance of ten million suns: elephant-faced, ten-armed, resplendent with two earrings.

Having worshipped with the highest devotion those learned in the science of the stars, she asked: "What is to be the name of these two, O best of the twice-born?" "O brahmin, give these two (children) names that fit their meaning, according to our wish." Hearing that speech of hers, the twice-born, devoted to devotion toward the twice-born, (did so). agre'dbhutatarā cāpi bhaviṣyatyanayormune | mahadbhāgyaṃ tava mune yallabdhāvīdṛśau sutau tatraikaṃ nāyakaṃ sthāpya vaikuṃṭhamagamacca saḥ | brahmaṇo yānamāruhya kadācicchākrameva ca aditiruvāca | tavājñayā gatā'raṇyaṃ tapastaptaṃ mahattaram | varaṃ dātuṃ mahorūpa āgato'sau gajānanaḥ

"And in time to come, O sage, things still more wondrous will come about for these two. Great is your good fortune, O sage, that you have obtained such sons as these." And having installed one of them there as leader, he went to Vaikuṇṭha, having mounted Brahmā's vehicle, and at times Śakra's very own. Aditi said: "At your command I went to the forest and performed very great austerity; to grant a boon, O great-formed one, that elephant-faced one came."

dṛṣṭvā'nyo harṣamāyāti kā vārtā svajanasya ha | ityākarṇya śubhaṃ vākyaṃ nāradena samīritam lakṣmyā saha tataḥ pūrvaṃ kṣīrābdhimagamaddhariḥ | atyāptaṃ paramaṃ daityaṃ tatra sthāpya vyacārayat dṛṣṭvā svarūpaṃ bhītā'smi tato prārthi vināyakaḥ | tena nānāvidhā dattā varā me munisattama

"Seeing (them), even a stranger comes to joy — what then to say of one's own kin!" Having heard this auspicious speech spoken by Nārada, Hari then went first, together with Lakṣmī, to the ocean of milk; having installed there a most trusted foremost demon, he considered (the matter). "Seeing (his) form I became afraid; then Vināyaka was entreated, and by him boons of many kinds were granted to me, O best of sages."

Then the two parents, having bowed to the sage Nārada, said to him: "By your grace, let there now be long life for our two sons." "What has not been conquered by me? Let the demons speak; there indeed I shall go." They said: "There is no remnant left at all, nowhere is there any domain of the gods." "I shall enter into sonship" — having said this, that Vināyaka vanished. "With my task accomplished by your power, I came to my own hermitage, O sage."

"Grant (them) your favour, so that these two may become mightier, renowned in the world, all-knowing, and punishers of enemies." — "Having installed the various demons, and (those) of the people, in the office of world-guardians, free from fear and without further exertion, guard Amarāvatī." Ka said: Hearing her words, that granting of a boon like nectar, that foremost of sages rejoiced together with her, O lord of sages.

Ka said: Seeing the devotion of the two sons of Rudraketu and Śāradā, he imparted to them both the great science of the five syllables. — Hearing thus the minister's speech, filled with the highest joy, that Devāntaka carried out the words he had well spoken. — The two took delight with the utmost gladness, contented as if by (a draught of) nectar.
