Beginning of chapter 91: Vyāsa said: Tell me another thing, O god — another story of Gaṇeśa; as I listen, my mind, O Lord, becomes exceedingly eager. Thus Gajānana appeared before Kaśyapa, his feet made vocal by the sound of the little bells and anklets. Kaśyapa said: Grant me the capacity to create creatures of many kinds, O Lord, and devotion to your lotus feet and the not forgetting (of them). Serpents and flocks of birds — from them came the whole moving and unmoving world. Seeing his offspring thus born in many kinds, then — he has a thousand eyes and just as many arms, though he is somebody's (child); he shines in the form of a child, he shines as a youth and as an old man too. Since he is of infinite power, he became Śeṣa, and is able in many forms to bear the earth; since the heavenly worlds are many in many ways — always we bow to and worship that Gaṇeśa. (4035) Beginning of chapter 92: Ka said: Having thus bowed and praised, all of them (spoke) to Gajānana; they spoke again to the lord of the hosts: "Now we are most blessed." Whoever recites (this) for just a month, ten times each day, will free from bondage one who has been imprisoned by a king — there is no doubt. And an image was installed by all men under the name Lambodara; another excellent image was installed by all the beasts. Taking only the essence of the essence, the thousand names were made; and out of those, twelve are declared to be the very essence. The giving of a crore of maidens in marriage, a crore of sacrifices, and observances, and all austerities, and holy fords and shrines — even by (all) that the greatness of Gaṇeśa's name is not fully known. Bhṛgu said: Thus, O king, the wondrous greatness has been told to you by me.

Brahmā said: Once, when the dissolution had taken place, Gajānana commanded me: "O Brahman, do you produce the manifold creation by my command." — Blessed are our austerity, our giving, our knowledge and our sacrifice, and our forefathers; blessed today are our eyes, by which Gajānana has been seen.

Then I fashioned seven sons out of my heart. I tell you their names: Kaśyapa, and also Gotama — Thus gratified by the nectar of their words and by their praises, the two-tusked one, out of (his) gravity, spoke while they listened.

Jamadagni and Vasiṣṭha, Bharadvāja and Atri, and Viśvāmitra — these seven, versed in all branches of knowledge. — "Nothing like this was ever shown by me in Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and the rest: that all this which is directly seen is my form, mine who am without qualities."

All of them said to me: "O Brahman, command us, lord of the gods." But Kaśyapa was recognised by me as the one greater in intelligence among them. — "Exceedingly pleased by this praise, I have come here to grant boons; whatever you desire, choose all of that."

"Do my work, the manifold creation" — thus was he then commanded; saying to me "Om, (so be it)," he went to the forest for austerity. — Being thus addressed then by that Vikaṭa, O lord of sages, they chose from that Gajānana each whatever he desired.

He recited the one-syllabled mantra for a thousand divine years; then the Lord, the two-tusked god, became gracious. — Since those boons are beyond counting, even four-faced ones have no power to relate them all; therefore I have told it in brief.

Four-armed, lotus-eyed, adorned with a great crown, holding noose and goad, with rosary and tusk in his hands, with fair armlets, rich in gold, gems and jewels, his neck agleam with a pearl garland. — He gave those and other boons; they all chose Gajānana. Again he said to them all: "This hymn is dear to me; whoever recites it at the three junctures of the day becomes learned and possessed of sons. He would obtain long life, health, lordship, increase of fame, the rise of victory, the objects he desires, and at the end the supreme state." Again the lord of the Gaṇas said: whatever man recites this hymn at the three junctures for three days, all his business will be accomplished.

Serpent-bellied, with an orb of radiance blazing like a crore of suns, his face agleam with wide-open eyes and a lovely gleaming trunk. — Whoever recites this auspicious set of eight verses for eight days, eight times on the fourth (lunar day), would attain the eight powers.

Seeing that god, Kaśyapa, overflowing with joy, danced; having bowed, he worshipped (him) with many auspicious things. — One who desires learning would obtain learning, one who seeks a son would gain a son; by twenty-one recitations one obtains all that is wished for.

With palms joined, well pleased, he said this to Gajānana: "Blessed are my father, my mother, my austerity, my knowledge, my body and my sight." — The man devoted to Gajānana who recites (this) with the highest devotion... Having spoken thus, the god then, while all were looking on,

"Blessed is this earth, dear one, and the plants, trees and fruits; blessed is the one-syllabled mantra, by which the lord of all has been seen." — He, the support of all, the fair-faced Gajānana, vanished; and they then made an image of Gaṇeśa with an auspicious face.

Gajānana, gracious of soul, the supreme Self, higher than the high, in whom the four Vedas are blunted and the Vedāntas are reduced to muteness. — And having installed that (image) in a large temple built of jewels, they made for it the widely known name "Sumukha."

Gaṇeśa said: "Because of your devotion, your praise and your observance, I am now pleased with you, O sage; choose from me whatever boon you wish for yourself." — They made her name "Gajakarṇā," of evident meaning; by its power they all, mounted in celestial cars, ascended to heaven.

Once Kaśyapa was suddenly afflicted by a bodiless (being); he found no relief anywhere, and so he went inside the house. By all the serpents a single Gaṇanāyakī (image) was installed, and the invocation they made of her was clearly "Dhūmaketu."

Diti, Aditi, Danu, Kadrū, Vinatā and the others stood before (him); Kaśyapa enjoyed them in turn in various houses. By the hosts of worms, insects and the like, and by the multitudes of trees and herbs, a supreme image was installed, renowned as Bhālacandra.

At the time stated, Diti bore daityas in great number, Aditi the gods and gandharvas, and Danu the dānavas. By other sentient beings another great Vaināyakī image, set within a jewelled palace, was worshipped in a spirit of devotion.

In due order there came to be, in great numbers, kinnaras, yakṣas, siddhas, cāraṇas, guhyakas, and animals both of the forest and of the village. Known by the name Gajānana, granting all wishes to all — those several ones became famed in the three worlds, each by its own kind.

The earth, the mountains, the trees, the oceans, the rivers, the creepers, the grains, the metals, the jewels, the pearls, the worms and the ants — (all) happy, and skilled each in his own work, by the grace of the god. I have no power to tell each name one by one.

Wise Kaśyapa rejoiced and imparted various mantras, having reckoned the debt-and-credit (of the syllables) and examined the siddha-and-enemy diagram — as at the churning of the ocean, like fourteen jewels. Thus in brief, O brahman, your greatness has been described.

To one (he gave) a sixteen-syllabled (mantra), and likewise one of eighteen syllables; to one a single-syllabled, and to another a six-syllabled one. To tell it at length neither Śeṣa is able nor Īśa, nor am I, nor Hari — (the mantras) of living beings from Indra down to a mosquito, and of yakṣas and rākṣasas.

A five-syllabled one, an eight-syllabled one, and a twelve-syllabled one too; and to one that bull among sages gave the great mantra. What reckoning of that can be made by me, O son of Satyavatī? Therefore in all undertakings Gajānana is to be worshipped.

And he should keep performing what he has undertaken until the god is beheld. Gajānana is the support of all, the giver of every attainment. He who does not worship the god, the destroyer of the gods' obstacles — that evil-souled man is to be shunned from afar, like a caṇḍāla.

Seeing the god, all of them praised him joyfully in many ways, with palms joined, bowed low, (praising) the god Gajānana with devotion. Whatever man recites (them) with devotion, obstacles do not approach that man; all his undertakings succeed, and at the end he goes to liberation.

And by the sight of him the worlds and the gods become purified; for this very reason, O sage, all Śāktas, Śaivas and Vaiṣṇavas (worship him).
