Chapter 86 begins. — Ka said: Seeing such a child, her breasts flowing with milk out of affection, the good woman joyfully embraced the child, her hand (upon him), her heart (his). || Since his mothers were six, he is also called Ṣāṇmātura; "this son is the conqueror of Tāraka, and he will conquer Tāraka." || Having bowed, he asked, for the accomplishment of every desire and aim. Skanda said: Father, I have heard the great tale, auspicious and of many kinds. || Tell me all of this, if you are pleased, Śaṃkara, for the benefit of all the worlds and for the establishing of this vow. || Chapter 87 begins. — Śaṃkara said: I shall declare to you the supreme rule of this vow: in Śrāvaṇa, in the bright fortnight, on the fourth day one should begin the vow. || He should feed (them) with such food and have that many gifts given; he should bow, ask forgiveness, and afterwards have "acchidram" recited. || With stick-fights of children he should dismiss her (the image) and go home. Whoever performs the vow thus even once, O six-faced one... || He performed the vow according to rule, as Śambhu had told it of old; and from the practice of the mantra, by the power of this vow, || by that very thing he became one whose every desire was fulfilled; yet I beg of you, from the god's own word: may defeat never be mine — become visible when I think of you. || Having praised and bowed, Skanda went to Śaṃkara, the world's benefactor; then, mounting his peacock, he told him everything. || "Tell me that, O Prajāpati, by the supreme Viśākha(?)." Brahmā said: The observance was performed by him where Ghṛṣaṇeśvara dwells. || Chapter 88 begins. — The sage said: I have heard the tale, O brahman, that rests upon the vow of the elephant-faced one. If Madana was burnt by that Śaṃkara with the fire of his wrath... || "Being pleased by the hymn, I grant all the desires that are seated in your heart." Hearing Śiva's words thus, Rati was delighted and bowed to him. || By Śiva's word she came to a most beautiful house; she remembered her husband, and the bodiless one came before her. || For a full hundred years he practised great austerity, reciting the one-syllabled mantra, intent on meditation upon Gaṇeśa. || "Today my birth is blessed, and my austerity more blessed still, in that your pair of feet, which releases from all sorrow, has been seen. || (Grant me) honour among all the gods, and loveliness as before, firm devotion at your feet, and victory over the three worlds." || Chapter 89 begins. — Gaṇeśa said: Whatever you have asked for, Kāma, all of it shall be yours; obtaining birth from Ramā's womb you shall be whole and altogether beautiful. || There he was swallowed by a fish; that fish was then (caught) by fishermen, and, being presented to Śambara, was handed over to Māyāvatī. || As Śeṣa worshipped with the six-syllabled mantra, and as both Rati and Madana rejoiced... || Śaṃkara, his body smeared with ash, with Śeṣa on his head, bull-bannered — the god worshipped by others with services made of the mind. || "I have come to this condition, I do not know by what deed; I cannot move at all, like a bird bereft of wings." || Chapter 90 begins. — Nārada said: Why have you become like this, without lustre, exceedingly grieved? How is your head broken? Whose most unwelcome servant are you, O sage? || He, the lord of all, when pleased — through him you will regain your former state; merely at the sight of your pitiable state my whole mind is melted. || "How, when an auspicious act is being done, may good come about? Or rather, as Nārada has said, I shall behold the lord of the Gaṇas, || the god who is master of the sciences, god of gods, dear to the gods, dear to Siddhi and Buddhi, giver of every attainment, of enjoyment and of release." || "Your strength to bear the earth shall be firm, and by my favour a steady station upon the five heads of the five-faced one. || By my grace you have today, Śeṣa, by good fortune, been granted the sight (of me); your place with me is unshakable, in Pātāla and in Śiva alike. It has been given by me, being pleased: bear the earth today as if it were a flower."

She, whose voice was deep as the Gaṅgā, said to her: "This child is mine"; and Fire said to her, the mountain's daughter: "He is mine." || Having performed the morning bath with a paste of sesame and āmalaka, and having completed all the daily and occasional rites, free from anger... || "But Madana is seen in all the worlds even today — how is that? Tell me all this in detail, four-faced one." || "He will be honoured by all and likewise the conqueror of the three worlds; flower, fruit, tender shoot, the limbs of a lovely woman, and the wind (shall be his)." || "Or was the mountain-lord angered against you? Did you show pride? Say what the cause is, Śeṣa; first let the remedy be told."

With cooked foods, modakas, laḍḍus and the like — he made his name "Mahotkaṭa" because of his fiery splendour. Tell, O sage, that effort by which I may become as before. Nārada said: I shall utter for you today the great mantra of that god, O king of serpents.

He was born on Śara island, and therefore also "Śarajanman"; and because he was born of the Kṛttikās he is known as Kārtikeya. And one should offer to the God of gods a handful of flowers with mantras; one should honour twenty-one brahmins learned in the Vedas. Brahmā said: Thus praised by her, Śambhu was pleased and then said to her. Śambhu said: Choose a boon, greatly blessed one, wife of Kāma, fair-faced one. He built a lovely palace shining with jewelled pillars. Born from Rukmiṇī's womb, he was cast into the ocean by a demon — he by whose grace Indra and the rest obtained their several stations, whose hairs, by whose command, are the agents of the entire creation, maintenance and destruction.

He will become commander of the gods' army, and so is called "Senānī"; from that very fact "Mahāsena"; and from having six faces, "Ṣaḍānana." The rite of the earthen Gaṇeśa was told before; that whole mode of worship too has been set forth here. Desiring good fortune, greatly afflicted, she spoke to that god. Rati said: Lord, if you are pleased, hear my highest words. When he was split open, (the child) came out of his belly and was reared by her. Nārada told her: this Kāma has been reared by you. Therefore I give you the six-syllabled mantra of Gaṇeśa; by the mere practice of it Gajānana will be visible to you.

Because the seed was shed three times, he is therefore called Skanda. While the two were speaking thus, Śakra and the other gods came. Afterwards one should oneself, together with one's kinsmen, listen to that very story; meditating on Gaṇeśa one should eat in silence, or else fast. In the netherworld, in heaven or on earth there may be lovely women with a woman's charms; (yet) not a trace of my beauty is in any of them, O three-eyed one. Being instructed, he then slew Śambara of many magic arts; by Gaṇeśa's grace he alone defeated many. He will fulfil all (your) desires; ask, then, for whatever else you wish.

And they rejoiced, bowed to him, worshipped, praised and sang; the sound of divine music filled heaven and earth and the netherworld. Seeing me, Śakra and the chief gods shamelessly shed their seed; from that a great shame arose for me — remove it. And with the many magic arts taught by Māyāvatī, he, famed as Pradyumna, went to the city of Sarasvatī. Ka said: Having given the instruction to Śeṣa, Nārada vanished. Śeṣa too, having made the supreme, auspicious resolve upon austerity, with all his organs restrained, meditating on the god Gajānana...

Then they, bowing down, entreated the general: "O god, slay Tāraka the demon, the thorn of the three worlds." Thus one should keep the monthly vow until the fourth of Bhādra; on that day a great festival should be held with care, according to one's means. By the rite stated before one should worship the Lord of Hosts; at night a vigil should be kept with the sounds of song and instruments. "And my beauty has become useless without Kāma, O Śaṅkara; disgrace burns me" — that Rati (spoke thus). And he is honoured among all the gods and brings victory over the three worlds; by Gajānana's grace he became content in bliss. He recited the supreme mantra for a thousand years; at the end of it he saw before him Gajānana, God of gods.

With various materials for the consecration they consecrated him into the office of general, with Vedic and Tantric mantras uttered by many sages, and with recitations of Purāṇas and other excellent tales; one should praise the two-tusked one with the thousand-name mantra; at dawn, having bathed clean, one should worship the two-tusked one. "By the gift of my husband, O lord of gods, revive me, treasury of compassion." Thus entreated by her, that Śaṅkara, benefactor of the world... He was seen by Rukmiṇī and the other women as though a second Kṛṣṇa; then, when they had risen and gone away ashamed on every side... Mounted on a lion, three-eyed, ten-armed, serpent-(bearing), with earrings and armlets, wearing a pearl garland, a most graceful crown, a jewelled ring and a rosary, followed unceasingly by throngs of gods and sages, curved-trunked, elephant-faced, taking on a body at his devotees' wish, granting the highest to gods and men — thus should one contemplate the one-tusked.

Then, having taken leave, those gods went to their own places; the sages too, free of effort, (settled) among them as before. One should devoutly feed a hundred and twenty-one brahmins, (and give) cows, land, gold, garments, ornaments and wealth. He spoke with smooth words, gladdening Kāma's wife. Śiva said: Do not worry, blessed lady; you should not be ashamed. And having recognized (him as their) son through Nārada's words, they rejoiced; approaching, they embraced him, and Rati bowed to them. Thus Gajānana came to give him his sight, accompanied by Siddhi and Buddhi, just such as the serpent had meditated on him before.

Once, out of childishness, he flew up and went to seize the moon; he was stopped by Brahmā: "Do not do such a rash thing!" If images made of metal are made, they should be given to a Brahmin; otherwise, with the greatest zeal, one should release (them) into the water. "(He) will fulfil your desires, and you too will become honoured. Having obtained all desires, one would attain the state of Gaṇeśa." It was performed by Brahmā for the sake of creation, while he recited the one-syllable mantra; Vikaṭa (Gaṇeśa) became manifest to him and gave him manifold power. By the force of the Lord's will, (the god) became manifest to her; and she, filled with wonder at this, rejoiced together with her husband. Vyāsa said: "How, O Brahman, was that Elephant-faced one worshipped by Śeṣa? For what purpose, and what was obtained by him from the well-pleased Elephant-faced one?" Īśvara said: "Well have you asked, Skanda, in a way that benefits all the worlds; I shall declare to you the vow that brings all attainments to men." "Thence, O six-faced one, was obtained the power of incarnating at will. By me too, my son, was this done, reciting the eight-syllabled mantra." (He was) tormented by the hosts of gods headed by Indra, and by the Tāraka demon, and by the sages who knew of the birth of Viśākha from you. Brahmā said: "Well have you asked, O Brahman; I shall tell the nectar of the tale. Listen attentively to it all, O son of Satyavatī." "By my radiance the moon shines, and fire, and the sun, and the stars; though I am of the nature of the supreme Brahman, I have been pleased by your austerity."

"(The vow) destroys all sins, gives dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation, destroys all enemies, and increases the wealth of sons." The vow was performed by Śakra wishing to slay Vṛtra, and by Madana (wishing to slay) the demon Śambara, and both were able to conquer (them). "I was requested to break your steadfastness, O lord; for the benefit of all I did such a deed." At a certain time Śambhu, together with Pārvatī, O sage, was sitting at ease on a fine mountain with its delightful slopes and heaps of rock. "(I) have appeared in order to give a boon and also for the benefit of the world; so tell me the boons—whatever and all that you desire—from me."

"I possess manifold powers; I destroy the three worlds." It was performed for the accomplishment of their own desires by Yakṣas, Gandharvas and sages, by Kinnaras, serpents and Rākṣasas, by Siddhas, Cāraṇas and men. "There is no merit in the three worlds equal to doing a benefit; yet by fate the opposite of that has happened to me, O lord of gods." (In a place) covered with various trees and creepers, resounding with the noise of waterfalls, where bees hum, dwelling in golden lotuses—Śeṣa said: "Overpowered by your radiance, O god, I have no strength to look or to speak; and your grace toward me is complete—be gentle toward me, O sinless one."

The breeze bearing the flowers of campaka, aśoka, bakula and mālatī gladdens the minds of those who dwell on its summit. "And I give you the six-syllabled mantra of the boon-giver." Brahmā said: "At an auspicious moment Śiva gave him the six-syllabled initiation." "How shall I remain, O lord of gods, deprived of my own body, like a corpse? Therefore, O Mahādeva, show me favour with compassion." Gandharvas, Apsarases, Yakṣas and Kinnaras came there, and gods and sages and Nāgas, to see him, the husband of the Mountain's daughter. Then Śeṣa, having bowed and praised the Lord of all, chose boons: "I revere you, O god, leader of the hosts, without beginning or end."

He asked his father again about the greatness of the vow. Skanda said: "Tell me at length the glory arising from the vow." At that very moment Skanda went to perform austerity, O best of the twice-born, in a very pure region thick with trees and creepers. Brahmā said: "Then Śiva gave the one-syllabled mantra of Gaṇeśa to Anaṅga, who bowed, and instructed him in its practice." Some saluted him with prostration touching all eight limbs; and the Gandharvas sang aloud and the hosts of Apsarases danced. "I bow to the all-pervading Lord, the cause of the cause of the world, of the form of all, lord of the universe, worshipped by the universe."

"In what month and on what day is its commencement made, O Hara? What is its procedure, what its fruit, and who had experience of it?" In a delightful place abounding in roots and fruits, adorned with lakes and ponds, Skanda, standing on one foot, performed very severe austerity. Then Anaṅga went to the delightful Janasthāna, the giver of good attainment; there Anaṅga carried out the observance by Śaṅkara's command. They worshipped Hara, the ten-armed, wearer of the tiger-skin, surrounded by the hosts of Nandin and Bhṛṅgin, moon-browed, trident-bearing—the Elephant-faced lord of the hosts; but the lord of Garuḍa (worshipped) him thus: "I bow to the lord of the guṇas, who transcends the guṇas, the lord of the hosts."

Feeding on air alone, always, ever accompanied by Rati—then the Lord, god of gods, the Elephant-faced one, became pleased. Some stood with eyes closed, intent on meditation: Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, Jamadagni, the twice-born Trita— "I bow to the god, the leader of the hosts, remover of all obstacles." Ka (Brahmā) said: "Having thus praised the lord of gods, the boon-giving Two-tusked one..."

"So I have come to give a boon; tell what is desired in your heart. Pleased by your austerity, I give it, O six-faced one." The Elephant-faced one—he (Skanda) revered the god's feet, first bowing also to the sages; then he praised the god Vikaṭa, the mine of compassion. He fainted for half a watch and became as if his life had gone; from then on he became adorned with a thousand hoods. "(Grant me) nearness to Śaṅkara too, pre-eminence in my family, and love for Śiva." Gaṇapati said: "Since your head has become tenfold, O lord of serpents..."

Kāma said: "Blessed are you among the gods, possessing the nature of the supreme Brahman; though formless, you have become formed, O you who are fond of your devotees." Then Śeṣa, whose life barely remained, Śeṣa the ornament of all serpents, grieved: "I have been an ornament of Hara, O lord of the three worlds." "Then, thousand-faced, adorned with a thousand hoods, you will be famed among people as long as moon, sun and stars endure."

(Though) unperceivable, (he) came to be perceived; therefore be renowned here by the name Lakṣavināyaka, you who are the wish-granting tree of the gods, fond of devotees. Lakṣa said: All that shall come to pass, O Skanda, whatever has been requested by me today — (he) whom those devoted to the Veda do not know, nor the Sāṃkhyas, the followers of Patañjali and the rest; they fell silent with "not this, not this," where even the Veda is blunted. "Who, then, could remove my sorrow?" — thus absorbed in that thought, he saw the sage Nārada coming along that road. Ka said: Thus he gave him boons and bound him within his own belly; (hence) the elephant-faced one obtained the name Vyālabaddhodara ("he whose belly is bound with a serpent").

"And may there be no forgetting, and may (your) presence be (mine) when I meditate (on you); may there be defeat of your enemies and pre-eminence among the gods." The lord of all, whose pores are endless crores of universes — and that mantra by which he was seen is the more blessed. The lord of serpents rejoiced somewhat, like a beggar who has had a dream. Nārada beheld before him that most wretched condition. The Lord placed his hand on Śeṣa's head to grant fearlessness, and himself showed his own universal (virāṭ) form to Śeṣa along with the earth.

Brahmā said: Thus the god gave boons, and well pleased he gave to Skanda his own vehicle, the peacock, because of (Skanda's) modesty and the power of his austerity. Gaṇeśa said: Rightly spoken, O lord of Rati: Brahmā and the others do not know me; when I take on form, then even they know me. Nārada asked Śeṣa — though he knew all things without exception — (about him who was) motionless, without breathing, fixed in meditation like a sage. He filled the sky, the earth's surface, the intermediate and the cardinal directions with sound — he at the soles of whose feet is the earth, whose ears are the directions, whose eye is the sun.

From then on the name "Peacock-bannered" became renowned. Gajānana said: The great demons Tāraka and the rest shall meet death at your hand. It was by my grace alone, O Kāma, that you then saw me; for I am well pleased with you by your austerity and by the mantra — (he) whose hairs are the herbs, whose nails are the mountains, whose sweat-water are the clouds, whose offspring is the four-faced one.

Then he made the auspicious name "Lakṣavināyaka," with a hundred thousand sweetmeats, with flowers and with dūrvā shoots — his own bodilessness, the lamentation of Rati, and the mantra, and the observance long performed, and the boon granted by Śiva. Seeing him in that form, Śeṣa became as if bewildered with fear, and he prayed to the Lord of Obstacles: "Become gentle again."

He worshipped that image with other such materials, and fed brahmins, twice-born to the number of ten thousand; and he was asking a boon from that well-pleased Gajānana.
