Beginning of chapter 81. Ka said: Rāma, having shaved and bathed duly according to the rule, performed the concluding śrāddha as the brahmins had told him. — He struck the arrow firmly, with force, into Jamadagni's heart; twenty-one arrows he shot in fury at his mother's limbs. — The sage said: "When you remember me and say 'Come, Dattātreya,' then you shall see me, O sinless one." — And the twice-born, having performed the release of a bull on the eleventh day, on the twelfth performed the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa for the two. Beginning of chapter 82. Vyāsa said: How did Rāma, a mere boy and alone, (fight) with Kṛtavīrya's son who had a great army and shone with a thousand arms? — Homage to you, the quality-less, the cause of pure knowledge, formless and with form, eternal; homage to you who go beyond the gods, the Vedas and the handed-down treatises; homage to you whose self is unmanifest and manifest, O you whose nature is being. — Libation with a tenth part of that, and feeding of brahmins with a tenth part of that, with great devotion: (thus) he will be favourable on earth. — Rāma suddenly saw him and closed his eyes; when (his sight) was struck back by that radiance, the twice-born then praised him. — "I am that one, and you have indeed been seen by me through your favour, O lord of obstacles; what else should I ask, O god? Grant me firm devotion to yourself." — Of the god Elephant-Faced I have spoken in brief, my son; not even Śeṣa is able to tell it in full, O lord of sages. Beginning of chapter 83. The sage said: In what place did Rāma perform that most wonderful austerity? Tell me that, O lord of the world; I have no satiety in hearing. — And those devoted to Vedic study, performers of austerity, and others intent on the fire-offering — he cast those twice-born into prison. — Having thus prayed, they practised the excellent, hard austerity: eating leaves, feeding on air, without food, drinking water. — "Then his destruction will come about; make effort in that." Hearing the voice from the sky, all were filled with joy. — Him (Śiva) motionless as a tree-stump, his eyes unmoving in meditation, meditating on Brahman with his mind, reciting, without possessions, dwelling (there) — the gods, having obtained him as their whole helper... Ka said: Having spoken thus, Kāma went where that Sadāśiva was. Beginning of chapter 84. Ka said: Having spoken thus, Kāma went to accomplish the gods' purpose; he saw Śaṃkara's place, thick with trees and creepers. — But Kāma, terrified with fear, hid; he was not caught anywhere. He remembered Indra and the others, and though remembered they did not go there. — Ka said: Hearing that speech of hers, whose head was at his feet, O sage, Śaṃkara, drawing back the fire, spoke with a smiling face. Beginning of chapter 85. Ka said: From Śiva's embrace the Bhil woman was set ablaze by the fire of love; the goddess found ease nowhere, like a small fish out of water. — The sages and gods, fallen from their stations, hearing of Kāma's doing, came again to Kailāsa, (and saw) Hara there absorbed in play. — "You yourself become the root of anger, O lord of the world; wherever there is fiery power, that form too is yours alone." — There, wherever the fire went, it found no relief there. Rising at dawn on the Gaṅgā, when the sun stood in Libra — At that moment Nārada, of divine aspect, going to see Kailāsa and its mountain-lord, saw him on the road.

Beginning from the resting-place he gave the fire of the mantra to both; and just then he set out toward that sage Dattātreya. — "He conquered that great hero: tell me that in detail." Ka said: One day Rāma questioned his mother. — Ka said: The holy field renowned in the four ages by the name Mayūreśvara, where the lord of gods descended, mounted upon a peacock — (a place) frequented by lions and tigers, filled with birds and beasts of prey; and he himself in that very instant fashioned an illusory garden. — She fell into the midst of the water, which was rich with cool uśīra root; yet even there she found no ease, nor did she get sleep on land.

Ill-clad, accompanied by disciples, with a dog in hand, dirty and lean — perceiving him through meditation, Rāma bowed to that best of sages. — Rāma said: He of whom Indra and the other gods are afraid, trembling with terror, whose army is endless, complete with its four divisions — (and who) slew the foremost of demons named Kamalāsura; and because he is mounted on a peacock he is plainly called Mayūreśa. — There were many lakes with waters like nectar, and trees with many blossoms, fragrant for a league around (or: fragrant with nāga flowers). — Camphor and sandal increased her burning the more; no cool thing gave her any satisfaction.

With palms joined the twice-born stood before him for half a watch. Dattātreya too, the all-knowing sage, having understood his intent — "How shall I conquer him, mother? Tell me the whole means," and how twenty-one times (he was to make) the earth free of kṣatriyas. Praised by gods and sages, he attained that fame in the world. There he performed the observance, and from it obtained the axe. Rose-apple, mango and jujube trees laden with well-ripened fruit, and likewise plantains, jackfruits, coconuts along with dates. Thus, after a long time, she, dried up to bone and skin — then Girijā came to Giriśa and spoke a word.

Addressing Rāma he said: "Your purpose is known; yet still I ask, in order to learn — for what have you come here?" "Tell me, and I shall do all of it; by your grace let there be victory, and let my incomparable fame be renowned in all the worlds." He himself became Paraśurāma, famed by that name in heaven. "I shall relate the old story; hear it, best of sages." Cardamom, clove, pepper trees and many others besides — that fragrance, not to be held back, went to the city of Hara's nose. "You do not regard me, god; I have come to the state of desire, alas! Though burnt, Madana torments me exceedingly, alas!"

Ka said: He spoke — then Rāma (told) the account plainly from the beginning. Rāma said: The king, son of Kṛtavīrya, came to my father's hermitage. The mother said: "May victory be yours, son; perform the worship of Śaṃkara. When that Mahādeva is pleased, every wish will be accomplished." There was a demon named Tāraka, of great strength and prowess; for a thousand divine years he practised most fearsome austerity. At dawn Hara saw a lovely moonlit stretch of water, and a wondrous pleasure-grove rich with many fruits and flowers. Various means were employed to appease her, and she was not appeased. "By whatever means there may be appeasement, do that for me, O lord."

He was fed with excellent food, furnished with many kinds of cooked dishes; he ate together with his army, and then asked for the wish-granting cow. Hearing that speech, Rāma went to Kailāsa, having bowed at his mother's feet and received her blessing. Then Brahmā, pleased, granted him safety from all, O twice-born — from gods, sages, yakṣas, gandharvas, serpents and rākṣasas. At that very moment he caused a division in the mind of the trident-bearer — his own aśoka grove, and "fie!" ... Śiva in his mind. Hearing this speech, Hara, who does his beloved's pleasure, secretly took her by the hand and seated her on the couch.

When she was not given (in marriage) by my father, he set his mind on carrying her off by force. Then, being struck, she brought forth many troops of soldiers. There he saw Mahādeva seated on a jewelled lion-throne; with palms joined Rāma bowed and then praised him. "By those hosts of weapons and missiles death shall not come to you anywhere; when Skanda is born, then your death shall come." The god, having assumed bodily condition, considered the cause: "By whom has this obstruction to austerity been made, this lovely grove created?" Mastered by Kāma, he took his pleasure with her as he wished. Though dead, he accomplished a great task, urged on by the gods.

Broken by those mighty ones, the king went with his army to his own dwelling; the wish-cow went to heaven, and then the king was filled with rage. Rāma said: Homage, god, lord of gods, lord of Gaurī, Śambhu! Homage to the maker of the universe, homage to its supporter, homage to its destroyer, homage to its sustainer, homage to him who is the abode of all, homage to him whose abode is the moon. Hearing that speech, Tāraka, filled with pride in his strength, oppressed the worlds and those dwelling in the three worlds, O sage. "By what wicked creature, whose life-span is finished, has this been contrived so suddenly?" — knitting his brows in anger, the insides of his eyes reddened. He won the fame that "there is no archer equal to Anaṅga"; and while those two played, sixty thousand years passed.

"I was not present there, O brahman; I came afterwards and saw. Those two were burnt by the fire of a mantra; at my mother's word I have come here." "Homage to you, who awaken the three guṇas and who are beyond the guṇas; homage to you who know the manifold world and who are free of the manifold world." Then, having brought all kings and nāgas under his sway, he went to heaven; then Indra and the other gods went to a cave of the Himālaya. Mounted on their aerial cars, the gods, desiring the accomplishment of their purpose — meanwhile Kāma was seen by Śiva, very slight and thin. Realising this they remained silent there, their minds troubled with anxiety; afraid of the demon Tāraka, they came back to the cavern.

"Apart from Dattātreya there is no other instructor in this work to be done; when the whole rite has been performed, for thirteen days..." Ka said: hearing this hymn Maheśvara was well pleased, and addressing Rāma he said, "I am satisfied by the nectar of your words." Out of fear of him no sacrifice and no worship took place anywhere: "I alone am the lord, the god, the brahman, the family deity." Opening his third eye, he burnt up Manobhava; the whole earth trembled, and heaven and the underworld as well. "When will his slaying come about, and when shall we go to our stations? When will Śambhu bring about the destruction of our sorrow?"

"Choose a boon from me, whatever you desire in your heart; I know you, son of Jamadagni, child of Reṇukā, O twice-born. I am the one to be saluted and worshipped; no other exists in the world; and whoever should anywhere bow down to others or ever worship them..." While the gods were saying "do not slay him," that (fire) born from the eye reduced Kāma to ashes, leaving only ash. While Brahmā and the gods were sunk in this ocean of anxiety, the preceptor of the gods spoke: "Hear my word, sinless ones."

Rāma said: "By the wicked Kārtavīrya, who coveted the wish-cow, Jamadagni was slain in rage, without any offence (on his part), O lord. He deserves punishment, he should be beaten, or he should go to Yama's abode." Thus he had it proclaimed in all the worlds by a messenger. "My mother Reṇukā was struck all over with arrows, twenty-one in number, even though he had eaten together with his army." Then all people became empty, bereft of good men, without recitation and without the vaṣaṭ-call, devoid of sacrifice and gift-giving. "Withdraw the fire that burns the three worlds, Śaṃkara; the demon Tāraka, who has received a boon from Brahmā, is exceedingly mighty." Then they summoned Fire and praised him with various hymns. The gods said: "From you, brahman, come the sacrificial acts and indeed all the sacraments."

With only her head incomplete, through the power of love for her son — if she should be summoned by the Bhārgava within twelve nights. Having fixed the activity of his senses and mind upon the elephant-faced one, the twice-born, standing on one big toe, kept repeating the great mantra. The unmoving one, standing upon the mountain, protected the people; it roars by its own nature, and then heaven trembles. Brahmā said: Hearing this speech of the gods, the twice-born became clad in ochre robes and went swiftly there where Pārvatī and the Lord were.

Then Indra and the other gods, in the mountain cavern, joyfully praised with deep-voiced speech Giriśa, the lord of Girijā. While the two were absorbed in love-play, standing outside he said "Give alms!" — three times, with drawn-out sound; the cry was heard by both.

Then, her breasts flowing with milk, out of affection she embraced Rāma. Dattātreya went off again, and on the sixth day the sage… Then the Lord Gajānana, well pleased, appeared: four-armed, of huge body, of great māyā, exceedingly beautiful. The gods said: "O you who are, together with the divine earth and sky, of the form of the moon; of the form of wind and fire; the sacrificer; of the form of water — you create the unmoving and the moving beings and protect (them), O Lord; you carry away everything by your own will, O Lord." And those two, both amazed, spoke words to each other: "Let each put on his own garment — from where has this one come here?"

He did not see Reṇukā there in such a form, (and) said to Rāma: "Why was she summoned in the very middle (of the rite)? She has come with an incomplete body." — And (Gajānana), wearing a serpent for a sacred thread, adorned with various ornaments, crowned, with earrings, with shining lovely cheeks and a radiant face. "So it is not fitting for you, O supreme one, remover of others' suffering, to make your own glory, which has gone over to another, manifold today. Therefore destroy this one — or else (destroy) all the sages and the gods, whose minds are absorbed in the worship of the two." And they pondered: "What is to be given to him?" Umā, unable to hold it, placed the semen in the water.

"To whom else shall we go for refuge but you, O Lord of the mountain? Whom shall we worship, O Bhagavān, but you, O Maheśa? To whom shall we speak, O crusher of sin, lord of Pārvatī? Rāma said: "Out of childishness, out of fear, O brahmin, and by nature, I said 'Mother', O tiger among sages; (and so) I have seen her in this state." — Holding a lotus upon a lotus, the mighty Lord whirled it at will, lighting up with his radiance all the directions and the intermediate directions. Ka said: They praised him thus for just so long as they heard the voice from the sky — all the gods (heard): "When there shall be a son of Hara…" And since Agni, out of fear of the curse of those two, (took) Hara's semen, Anala became pregnant, both ashamed and burning.

Then on the following day (he performed) the provision-offering, the śrāddha and the proclaiming of the auspicious day, and gave many gifts to the brahmins according to their desert. Rāma said: "O you who resemble a thousand suns, homage to you, Lord of the world; homage to you, lord of all knowledge, giver of all attainments." Indra and the other gods reached Kailāsa, the dwelling of the gods; they did not see Śaṃkara there — the immortals saw before them… While he was performing the purificatory rites in order to bathe, just then six women came there, intent on bathing in the month of Ūrja.

Jamadagni then went with a divine body to Brahmā's world; that Reṇukā remained on the earth, in such a form at place after place. "To you, lord of obstacles, averter of obstacles; to you, the inner controller of all — homage, O maker of all that is dear." All of them made their plea to Umā, who is the very form of the root Prakṛti: "O saviouress, giver of the knowledge that saves, save (us) from Tāraka." And that which was released by Agni — this Gaṅgā, beloved of Hara, will bear it, if she is able, being of the form of water and very cool.

She fulfils all the desires of the people who practise devotion; her greatness is told at length, and in particular in the Skānda (Purāṇa). "Homage to the god who loves his devotees, whose very nature is knowledge; homage to you, the maker of the universe, and homage to its protector." "(Save us) from the wicked one who torments the three worlds, who has cast the sages and gods down from their stations; so, Mother, let it be considered how his destruction may come about." And that semen of Śiva was swallowed by them in six portions; in that very instant that fire vanished.

Then all the gods intensely called Kāma to mind; and when he came they, resolved upon their own purpose, spoke to him. "Six-faced, twelve-armed, of splendour like ten million suns — the six-faced one has fallen on the bank of the Gaṅgā; was he then abandoned by you?"
