Chapter 71 begins. The king said: How is the concluding rite (udyāpana) of this vrata to be performed, O great-minded one? Tell me that in detail, out of desire for the good of the people. There he should choose an officiating teacher and twenty-one priests; with the mantra "gaṇānāṃ tvā..." he should offer ten thousand oblations. — The excellent vrata having been well explained and told by the learned; having installed an image made of gold, together with Siddhi and Buddhi. Chapter 72 begins. Śūrasena said: When the vrata had been performed, how did a son come to those two, O Śatakratu? Tell me all that, O lord, since I ask in detail. — And hearing their weeping the townspeople then wept. Indra said: Hearing thus the minister's words the king became alert, and said to the queen: "Rise, rise, do not grieve." — The king rightly addressed the great sage Dattātreya, who was well pleased and comfortably seated, with massaging of his feet and the like: "By what means may a son with all his limbs be born to me by your grace?" Indra said: That sage, filled with compassion, then spoke to his son. Chapter 73 begins. Indra said: He recited according to rule the mantra taught by his guru, meditating on the god Gajānana, taking up the final steadfastness. Indra said: Hearing his words, that Gajānana, master of illusion, assuming the power of minuteness, respectfully entered his belly. — Elephants, horses and palanquins, parasols, whisks and lamps, chariots and other gifts — all the kings brought them. It was witnessed by the hosts of gods and by Candrasena and the other kings; and this (account) is most holy, granting success even by being remembered. Chapter 74 begins. Vyāsa said: O brahman, how did that king Śūrasena perform it, having reverently heard the excellent (rite) with its legend from Śakra's mouth? — He was a kṣatriya; this daughter of his, Sundarā by name, was lovely, cuckoo-voiced, moon-faced, surpassing Rati in beauty. Being awake, they learned her conduct and reported it to the king; his messengers stood in the darkness, and meanwhile she came home. — As it went, that (aerial) car of his fell in Śūrasena's city; that very instant, by his glance, upon the leprous son of a vaiśya. They went to that Śūrasena and related the event; and while they were speaking, that car went off together with the cāṇḍāla woman. Chapter 75 begins. Ka said: Having heard and seen the greatness that arises from the vrata, Śūrasena, minded to perform it himself, said to Vasiṣṭha, the bull among sages... — (a pavilion) lovely with rows of mirrors, decorated with flower garlands, filled with the sheen of many jewels, radiant with rows of lamps. — At clear dawn, having bathed and again worshipped as before, he (gave) that image of the lord of hosts to Vasiṣṭha along with a fee. — "We do not know, O king, how great is the greatness of devotees, whereby that which is without qualities and without form comes to have form." — The people said to one another: "Whence a treasure for one whom fate does not favour? How could he ever climb up to the begging-bowl, that very great hanging sling?"

Chapter 71 begins. Brahmā said: In the first month, or in the fifth or the seventh, the concluding rite is to be performed, O lord of men, for the completion of the vrata. Indra said: What is there that does not come to pass, O king, when Gajānana is well pleased? By his grace that queen conceived the king's child. — Feeding on air, without food, like a clod or a stone: thus twelve years passed for him as he practised austerity. Brahmā said: Then he said this to his own messengers: "Let them go to the city; he who performs the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vrata is to be brought." The king said: Tell (me) the auspicious moment for the sake of the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vrata; I wish to perform here the vrata that at once produces conviction.

The devout man should worship by the rite stated before, having made a flower-pavilion variegated with many cloths. — In the ninth month she gave birth and beheld an auspicious son, two-shouldered, with a lovely face, but lacking arms and hands. — Of that great-souled boy who lacked hands and feet, seeing that, Gajānana (granted) his release after twelve years. — Those messengers went in haste and enquired house by house; as they wandered they saw a beautiful, auspicious aerial car. Vasiṣṭha said: In the dark fortnight of Māgha, on a Tuesday, perform the excellent vrata that brings about all attainments and grants all desires, O best of kings.

With sandal, with fragrance, with flowers of many kinds, and with a coconut fruit, he should with collected mind offer the arghya. — She said: How has such a boy come to unfortunate me? Why has he been given lacking hands and feet, O Gajānana? Gaṇeśa said: Because in this desolate forest, haunted by lions and tigers and thick with thickets, he stood for twelve years... — Dry-bellied, long-haired, dry of teeth, eyes and nose, exceedingly filthy, with long ear-holes, harsh-voiced — once, wearing beautiful garb, she left him on the bed and set out at midnight; thereupon he seized her by the hand in anger. — Intending to begin the excellent Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vrata, he arrived, performed his bath, and completed the daily rites.

Or with the root-mantra a thousand, or half of that, or a hundred and eight; then he should perform the offering of the bali. — The king said: What is this compassion of yours for the wretched, O god Gajānana? How has this mercy been shown by you to me today? — When he had entered, that son became of divine body, O king; the son of Kṛtavīrya was then born possessing a thousand arms. — She, whom the famed eight nāyikās were not fit to serve, who by a sidelong glance would bewilder even the minds of yogins... — In the middle of it, having installed on a golden pot the elephant-faced one, a golden image, beautiful and lovely in all its limbs...

Then Brahmā and the others, descending from their vehicle, said to him: From your remembering (them) the gods would recover a thing that is lost. In the midst of the great pavilion, in one place recitation is made by brahmins; in one place the Purāṇa, in one place learned disputation, in one place singing and dancing. And the king himself, glad at heart, summoning the best of the twice-born, performed the worship of Gaṇeśa and also the recitation of blessings. Then, with the twice-born going before him, he installed in the middle of the great palace a coral image of the Lord of the Hosts. The sounds of instruments of many kinds went forth to heaven; in some places people were disputing, and some were neutral. Having performed the ābhyudayika śrāddha, he gave gifts many times over: garlands, ornaments and garments, cows and jewels, many times over. The twice-born gave him the name "Pravāla-gaṇapa"; he gave villages to the brahmins, and to those who had been appointed for the worship. The king received the blessings for a son from all those satisfied twice-born, ascetic, ever truth-speaking men. On the eleventh day he made his name "Kārtavīrya"; he feasted the city with great festivity going before. A thousand (arms) upon the head(?), and pre-eminence even among the nine families of Nāgas; with an exceedingly satisfied mind, by him that was formerly installed. At that very moment she went to beg at the house of a performer of the vow; the food that was given her by him she ate at the rising of the moon. "Held by eagerness to see you, we have therefore come." Hearing that speech of theirs, the ruler of the earth shed tears.

By the blessings, in a short time the king's wife became pregnant; at an auspicious hour she bore a son endowed with (auspicious) marks. Then twelve years of the son passed by; and then Dattātreya came of his own accord to his house. Thus his second name, "Dharaṇīdhara," became famous, granting the fruit of every desire to those who remember and to those who hear it. And when she, of her own accord, by the working of fate, uttered "Gaṇeśa," at that very moment an auspicious car was sent by the Lord of the Hosts. He spoke with faltering voice, his body thrilled with horripilation; then king Śūrasena said to them, as though smiling:

Delighted at the birth of a son, he gave many gifts; and in due time the king performed his investiture with the sacred thread and his marriage. Placing his own head at his feet, Kṛtavīrya bowed to him; the sage rose and embraced that best of kings. Having honoured all those bulls among the twice-born, and having inquired after all these kings, the thousand-armed one then went to his own city to see his own mother and father. Brahmā said: Hearing the words of the gods' messengers, they spoke again: "Salutation to you." The king's messengers said: This most wondrous thing has been seen by us, the executors (of the king's orders). Of the unmanifest, the immeasurable, the eternal(?) ruler of the world, though he be within the range of speech and mind, there is no cause for my seeing him.

And having consecrated in the kingdom his son endowed with knowledge and discernment, he, with a good son and full of enjoyments, at the end went to the station of the Lord. Seating him on a lovely seat, he worshipped him respectfully: a seat, water for the feet, arghya, a cow, a garment and a sacred thread. The two rejoiced on seeing him and the city in such a condition; they gave various gifts in every way to the chief of the twice-born. Learn this word, which was taught to us by the king: Śakra, mounted on an excellent car, (went) to see Gṛtsamada. Together with the officiating priests, along with the learned men and all the spectators—by his merit all of them went to the abode of Gaṇeśa. He gave incense and lamp, food-offering and various fruits, unguent and betel, and a fee of jewels and gold. Indra said: Moreover the greatness of Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī is wondrous; from Kṛtavīrya's son this auspicious one went to the world of mortals. Bhruśuṇḍi came with the gods; having seen him, bowed to him and worshipped him well, and having received his leave and his worship, he went to his own city. Today indeed the merit of birth after birth has borne fruit for me, in that the direct sight of you, O sage, has come to eyes of mere flesh. By his grace Rāvaṇa obtained knowledge of everything; by this grace the Pāṇḍavas formerly obtained their kingdom. Śūrasena went there, and having saluted and worshipped him well, he asked about the means of the car's descending and also of its going. The king said: I have one great desire, now that the god is pleased and you are pleased: how, leaving my city, may I go to Gajānana?

In future something better still will come about by your grace, O you of good vows; for those of sinful deeds never obtain the sight of ones like you. If the merit of this vow is placed in my hand, then at that very moment that car would move toward Amarāvatī. But it was said by Indra: The vehicle will set forth by the merit arising from the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vow; make effort for that. Never anywhere has deadly poison been eaten by me apart from these; how then shall I enjoy the supreme bliss without them, O sinless ones?

This son given by the Lord of the world is a very thorn in my heart: through him, who was fit to be looked at, he has come to be one not to be looked at. Undertake the observances of fasting and of eating but once, O you of good vows; then after twelve years he will grant you his sight. By the touch of the wind the car went upward — while all the worlds looked on and the gods and sages were amazed — "when this one has gone below, this car will (rise) upward." By the mere falling of his gaze you will become one with a divine body. Having said this and taken leave of the king, the best of sages fell silent. All went each to his own place, when Śakra had gone to Amarāvatī; and she too, possessing a divine body, reached Vināyaka's abode. "I am one of sinful conduct — I am the one to be abandoned, not these others; or else let his former sin and his birth be told."

When the sage had gone, the son, lacking feet but great of mind, said to Kṛtavīrya: "Bring me to the forest, having cast off sin through the merit of the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vow." Whoever should rightly hear this, or diligently cause it to be heard... "Out of affection for me, and because you know everything, and out of compassion too, (tell me) the means." The messengers said: "No anxiety need be felt, O king; we will tell you."

"For the sake of Gajānana's favour I shall perform the observance." His two parents wept on hearing the words he had uttered. A man attains all his desires; (this vow is) the destroyer of distress — (tell me) the leper's birth-sin, the remedy, and his evil deed.
