Chapter 66 begins. — Kauṇḍinya said: But those two, whose seat was the bare earth, who wore the sky for a wrap, naked, both abstaining from the touch of any metal — / The two said: "There is nothing in our house; that is your oath, O best of the twice-born. In the morning dūrvā shoots were taken for the worship of the lord of hosts." / "Choose quickly that boon which each of you wishes in his mind." The two said: "In whatever births we two may have, may there be firm devotion to you in them." / "Neither less nor more than that weight is to be accepted, O fair-faced one." / Chapter 67 begins. — The Gaṇas said: Commanded by that sage for the accomplishment of his intended purpose, he took a single dūrvā shoot and came into Indra's presence. / Out of fear of his master he did not take it, doubting whether it was less or more; he placed that dūrvā shoot on the goldsmith's balance. / He went with face downcast, sunk in worry, thinking "What is this?"; and he called to mind Viṣṇu and Hara, wishing (the other pan) to rise there. / Not Brahmā, not Hari, Śiva, Indra, the Maruts, not Agni, the Sun, Yama, not Śeṣa, ... nor the moon, nor Varuṇa, nor the moon, nor the Aśvins, nor the lord of speech, nor Garuḍa, nor the king of the Yakṣas, nor Aṅgiras — knows fully your greatness, O god, whose form is not known by the scriptures. / In describing (it) without remainder Śeṣa is unable, unable are Hari and Īśvara — (that dūrvā) by whose single leaf alone the three worlds became equal on the balance. / Mounted on excellent celestial cars, wearing divine garments and unguents, some went to Vināyaka's abode bearing his form. / Chapter 68 begins. — Śūrasena said: Tell, O Indra, yet another tale of the lord of hosts. What did Kṛtavīrya's father do after that? / "Offspring will come to your son, there is no doubt." The father said: Then it was written just so, as Brahmā had declared. / "Through separation from him I grieve, like a penniless man whose wealth is gone; and this word was spoken to me by him: perform this vow for the sake of a son." / "The fruit of offering dūrvā, and separately the fruit of white dūrvā — this vow, O greatly fortunate, sinless one, has been obtained by you through good fortune." / Chapter 69 begins. — Śūrasena said: How was that granter of success enjoined upon Kṛtavīrya by Brahmā? Tell me that best of vows, the Saṅkaṣṭa-caturthī; / speak to me in detail, since I ask out of affection. Brahmā said: Having completed the daily rites, then at night at (the moon's) rising, the injunctions ... / This much for the water for the feet: "Homage be to you, O pot-bellied one. Receive this, endowed with jewels and with fruits, O lord of gods; ward off my distress" — with "tripād ūrdhva..." the arghya. / "O you who destroy the darkness of obstacles, lord of the thirty (gods), receive the lamp, O lord of gods; ward off my distress" — with "brāhmaṇo'sya" the lamp. / "Homage to the lord of hosts" — the salutations. Thus let him praise as prescribed and bow again and again; let him make circumambulations, twenty-one as he is able. / "Homage to you, Bhālacandra, homage to the axe-bearer; homage to you, lord of obstacles, bestower of all knowledge" — thus the arghya to the god. / And to the moon seven times with this mantra, O king: "O you arisen from the salt ocean, born in Atri's lineage, receive the arghya given by me, O moon, together with Rohiṇī" — the moon-arghya mantra. / Chapter 70 begins. — The king said: By whom was this vow performed of old, by whom was it made known on earth? What merit and what fruit has it? Out of compassion tell me, O lord. / Many years passed for me thus afflicted with worry; then, by the conjunction of fate, the sage Lomaśa came to me. / Placing the hand between the knees, let him meditate on Gaṇeśa in the heart; and what is left over from the twice-born is to be eaten together with kinsmen.

The two, who never begged with (outstretched) arms, performing all their rites with water alone — assuming the form of a brahmin he saw them doing (this) for the purification of their being. / Āśrayā said to him: "Indra, give me fine gold; I have come to beg of you at my husband's word, O lord of gods." / Indra said: ... Having heard the tale on the Saṅkaṣṭa-caturthī, the best of kings — having heard the tale of the dūrvā, the king became filled with anxiety. / Indra said: Going to the omniscient four-faced one, seated at ease in Satyaloka, Kṛtavīrya's father, the king, bowed and asked (him). / Homage to Umā's son. — Brahmā said: Formerly, when Skanda had gone away, the vow was performed by Pārvatī herself, and in four months too, at Śiva's word, O king.

Rice cooked, milk-rice, and many kinds of cooked dishes, and all the side-dishes, things to be licked and sucked, in many forms. Even then the dūrvā-sprout (outweighed them): the other pan went down. Kubera placed there one thing after another, much gold. Having said this he vanished — (he was) the father of that son, O king; then the king Kṛtavīrya, the mighty, awoke. In the absence of that, (let it be) silver, or copper, or of bamboo; upon it one should place a cloth, or linen, according to his capacity. Homage to the shatterer of obstacles. Virocanā, having prepared it, placed it there on (the pan against) the dūrvā-sprout; and the brahmin took it and devoured it with the greatest delight. But that too did not turn out equal to the dūrvā-sprout; all the goods that were in the treasury were given by him, (heaped) like a great mountain. Upon it one should inscribe the diagram according to the rule stated in the Āgama; there (should be set) an image of Gaṇeśa, golden, endowed with the (proper) marks. "At my word, fair-browed one, mount the scale-pan first; if it is not equal, I shall mount it myself, to protect my own being (or: my honour)." Meanwhile her ministers came, surrounded the king and spoke. The ministers said: Cast off your negligence, O king; become attentive of mind. Kauṇḍinya said: Hearing that speech of his, the Elephant-faced one said "So be it," and embracing him again, joyfully concealed his devotee Triśiras. Then Śiva, Viṣṇu and the lord of wealth rose up from there; Varuṇa, Indra, Agni and the Maruts went round about Kauṇḍinya. The ministers said: He who is the father of all worlds, of men, serpents and rākṣasas — he himself, in the form of your father, is well pleased, O Elephant-faced one. Milk, curds and ghee, together with sugar and honey — accept this five-fold ambrosia; ward off my distress. It is not to be taught to one without devotion, nor to an unbeliever, nor to a rogue; it should be given to a son, to a pupil, to one endowed with devotion, to a good man.

"For this reason a load of dūrvā is given by me to him; the god did not attain satisfaction by eating countless (offerings)." The gods and divine seers, the siddhas, vidyādharas and serpents (departed), as birds at day's end to their own nest. He told them the means for offspring, O best of kings — otherwise, where would that book be, where would the truth of the dream be? The five-fold ambrosia (is offered) with the mantras. With waters born of the Narmadā, the Candrabhāgā and the confluence of the Gaṅgā you have been bathed by me with devotion; ward off my distress. The bathing (is done) with "yat puruṣeṇa...". You are dear to me, O lord of kings, most righteous, a bull among kṣatriyas; you will be a doer of deeds for the worlds; and so the vow has been taught (to you).

And with a single dūrvā-sprout he attained the highest satisfaction. Thus the auspicious greatness has been rightly told to you, O Āśrayā — (the greatness) arising from the offering of dūrvā, which by the mere hearing grants every wish. All of them, bowing to the sage, spoke with agitated minds. All said: Our sin has gone to dissolution by the sight of you, O sage; without (your) grace even a dream is declared to turn out contrary. Indra said: Hearing thus the ministers' speech, the king, attentive of mind... O elephant-faced one, homage to you; accept, O supreme lord, this pair of garments, O overseer of the gaṇas; ward off my distress. The garment (is offered) with "taṃ yajñam...". Therefore in all vows this must first be done by you; your undertakings will reach success — I have not spoken otherwise.

Whoever with devotion listens to this story or causes it to be heard, he is rich in sons and wealth and rejoices here and hereafter. "From the merit produced before, good fortune will come to us in the future; the strength taken from your wife is today plainly (the strength) of us all." He summoned the learned men and his friends too and questioned them: "Tell the meaning of the book, O brahmins, by his grace." Homage to you, Vināyaka; homage to the wielder of the axe; accept this sacred thread; ward me from distress. The sacred thread (is offered) with "tasmāt...". One would obtain devotion to the Elephant-faced one; one free of desire would attain liberation. The gaṇas said: Even having heard the story thus, Āśrayā (had) doubt again. "We do not know the greatness that arises from a dūrvā-sprout: even the three worlds did not match the balance of one dūrvā-sprout." They spoke, having looked at the book, of its meaning in the whole assembly. The brahmins said: Here, O great king, is the great dialogue of Brahmā and Kṛtavīrya. Homage to you, son of Īśa; homage to the mouse-borne one; accept sandal-paste, O god; ward off my distress. Sandal (is offered) with "tasmād yajñāt...". The Sūta said: Thus, having heard it duly, that best of kings performed the vow for the quelling of every sorrow; by the power of the vow he conquered his enemies and enjoyed his kingdom with his sons, free of thorns.

Sacrifice, giving, vows, austerity, even Vedic recitation, are not its equal." Here the Fourth (day), destroyer of all distress, has been set forth; at moonrise the worship of Gaṇeśa has been declared in detail. Rice-grains, very lovely, mixed with ghee and saffron — these unbroken grains (are offered) to you, homage; ward off my distress. (This is) the unbroken rice.

"O lord of those who know particulars, by you who know particulars it has been rightly done for me, O mighty one, compassionate to all beings." He, with senses subdued, recited that mantra with undivided devotion, meditating on Gaṇeśa; and he performed the vow that destroys distress, to please the Lord of Hosts, in order to obtain a son. The two worshipping the God of gods continually, evening and morning, having given up sacrifice, vow and gift — the god Elephant-faced, knowing (this), (was pleased). "You alone create the universe, O elephant-faced one; you alone protect the universe, O god; you alone withdraw the universe, O Lord of all; you alone, whose self is the universe, shine forth."

kṛpayā parayāviṣṭaḥ svadhāma pratyapādayat | gaṇā ūcuḥ | agādhaṃ varṇitaṃ dūrvāmāhātmyamidamuttamam iti stutiḥ | namāmi devaṃ gaṇanāthamīśaṃ vighneśvaraṃ vighnavināśadakṣam| bhaktārtihaṃ bhaktivimokṣadakṣaṃ, vidyāpradaṃ vedanidhānamādyam

Filled with the highest compassion, he granted (them) his own abode. The Gaṇas said: "This unfathomable, excellent greatness of dūrvā has been described." Thus the hymn of praise: "I bow to the god, the Lord of Hosts, the ruler, the Lord of Obstacles, skilled in destroying obstacles, remover of his devotees' distress, skilled in granting devotion and release, giver of knowledge, the treasury of the Vedas, the primal one."

By remembering "dūrvā," threefold sin goes to dissolution; for when it is remembered, the god Elephant-faced too is remembered thereby. "Those fools who, O Gaṇeśa, without worshipping you, desire the accomplishment of their intended aim — they alone surely perish in the world; your whole power is known to me."

Thus the greatness of the Cintāmaṇi holy site has been plainly described; through hearing, reciting and meditating (on it), it grants the fruits of enjoyment and liberation. The petition: "You are the teacher, O chief of the twice-born, giver of all attainments; let the offering be accepted, O brahmin; ward off my distress."

For this reason the auspicious vehicle was sent for the three. The dūrvā went to the god from the mouth of the donkey and of the bull. "Water joined with fruit, flowers and unbroken grains, together with a fee — a special libation has been given by me; ward off my distress."

cāṃḍālyā śītanāśāya tvānītā tṛṇabhārataḥ | vāyunā prabalenāpi gatā dūrvāṃ gajānane iti ṣoḍaśopacārairmantreṇānena pūjayet | oṃ namo heraṃba madamodita mama saṃkaṭaṃ nivāraya svāhā | indrādilokapālāṃśca samantāt pūjayet sudhīḥ

By a Caṇḍāla woman it was brought from a load of grass to dispel cold; and by the strong wind the dūrvā went to the Elephant-faced one. Thus one should worship with the sixteen services with this mantra: "Oṃ, homage to Heramba, delighted with rapture, ward off my distress, svāhā." And the wise one should worship Indra and the other world-guardians all around.

Since dūrvā is dear to him, that Vināyaka was pleased; because the three were free of sin, he granted them his own presence. One should prepare, as far as one is able, sweetmeats made with cooked mung beans and sesame, fried in ghee, other edibles, and betel.

The Lord becomes pleased by the mere scent of dūrvā, whether (offered) incidentally or with devotion — how much more when it is placed on his head! Then, taking twenty-one dūrvā shoots with devotion, one should worship the god with these name-formulas, well concentrated.

Brahmā said: Thus the king then heard from the messenger's mouth that greatness of dūrvā, which had not been seen nor heard of by all the sages. "O lord of hosts, homage to you, son of Umā, giver of fearlessness; O one-tusked, O elephant-faced, and likewise O mouse-borne one."

Having bathed and taken dūrvā shoots, they worshipped Vināyaka; and the attendants too honoured the glorious Elephant-faced one with dūrvā. "O Vināyaka, O Lord, O son, giver of all attainments; homage to you, pot-bellied one, curved-trunked destroyer of sin."

They all became of divine body, in splendour bright as the sun, hearing on every side the many sounds of the gods' instruments. "To the destroyer of obstacles, honoured by the universe, lord of the immortals; homage to you, elephant-faced one, who wears a serpent as sacred thread."

Some townsmen who had come to see that great festival honoured him with twenty-one dūrvā each. Thus one should worship the god with dūrvā, each one separately; whatever the purpose for which the worship is properly performed to the best of one's ability —

And they all, having enjoyed pleasures, came to Gaṇeśa's abode; and the aerial car too moved upward through that accumulation of merit. "By that be quickly pleased; fulfil the desires that are in my heart; destroy all my obstacles and the wicked ones who have come upon me."

Therefore a devotee of Gaṇeśa should perform worship with dūrvā. But the man who out of negligence does not perform worship with them — "By your grace I do all my tasks here; bring about the destruction of my enemies' wits and the rise of my friends."

— he is to be known as a Caṇḍāla, and he will attain many hells; a man should never look at his face. Having thus informed the Lord of gods and bowed down again and again, the observer of the vow should then perform the fire-oblation, one hundred and eight (times).

But he who worships that God of gods, the Elephant-faced, with dūrvā — even another sinner attains purity by the sight of him. For the completion of the vow the offering-gift should be made with sweetmeats, or with laḍḍus, fritters and the like, together with twenty-one fruits.

When many dūrvā shoots are not to be had, one may worship with a single one; even by that, worship is made a crore-fold — there is no doubt. Having covered (the offering) with a red cloth, one should present it to one's own teacher: "Homage to you, O lord of the hosts, giver of the fulfilment of every intention."

Brahmā said: Thus, O king, the manifold greatness (of the dūrvā) has been told to you; and the legend of the dūrvā grasses destroys sin by the mere hearing. "By the gift of the vāyana, keep distress away from me" — this is the vāyana-mantra. Then, having heard the meritorious story, let him with collected mind offer the arghya.

It is not to be told to one of evil mind; it may be imparted to a beloved son.
