Chapter 61 begins. Brahmā said: Once, O king, I went to Kailāsa, the abode of Giriśa; seated in the midst of the assembly, I saw Nārada arrive. (The moon said:) 'How was this wickedness committed by me out of ignorance, like a child! I became unfit for all to look upon, discoloured and soiled.' The gods said: 'We all desire favour for you toward the Moon; when he is favoured, there will be a hold (of grace) for us all — since you committed an offence against Gajānana, the teacher of all.' Thus he was restrained by that one who desires the welfare of all the worlds. Thinking, 'He has come here to grant a boon,' he bowed to him; with supreme devotion he praised Gajānana, god of gods. 'Each month, on the second day, you shall be one to whom homage is paid.' The Moon, having thus obtained his boon, then became as he was before. Chapter 62 begins. Kṛtavīrya's father said: As to why (the rite) is performed on the Fourth in the dark fortnight, with devotion, at moonrise — that reason, which I asked, has been explained to me. And he was ill-clad because of poverty, and though he had a garment, yet naked; Sulabha, the moment he saw him, bowed down, filled with joy. She had an exceedingly dried-up body, protruding teeth, a hideous face; once, as she was roaming, she (went) to the south of the city. Both of them ate the grass of that Cāṇḍāla woman; while the people there were fast asleep, a fight broke out between the two. 'He is to be honoured and worshipped by me, whoever performs circumambulation; therefore I convey her by aerial car to my own abode.' Chapter 63 begins. The Gaṇas said: Hear, all you yogins, having made your unsteady mind firm, that which neither Śeṣa nor the four-faced one is able to tell. There was a very great hermitage furnished with creepers and trees, where there were very great lakes with lotuses in bloom. Yama went out from that assembly, his face bent down in shame; and as he went, his seed slipped and fell upon the earth. 'How has this untimely destruction been met with by the people! Alas, Gajānana, lord of gods! alas, alas, remover of obstacles, imperishable one! (You have) manifested to save us, effecting the destruction of the wicked.' Hearing that speech of theirs, Gajānana in the form of an infant... as a timiṅgila (devours) fishes, as Garuḍa serpents. Hearing that speech of theirs, the supreme Self, Gajānana... Chapter 64 begins. Āśraya said: When the gods and sages had gone, and the child stood like a mountain, what marvel was there then, (concerning) the child born of the fire of time? The gods, and the sages too, praised him as 'Bhālacandra'; yet the fire, rising up to his throat, was not appeased. And he said to the sages and the gods: 'Worship of me made with devotion, whether great or small, is in vain without dūrvā shoots.' Kauṇḍinya said: Thus the whole excellent glory of dūrvā has been told to you; from hearing and reciting it there comes the destruction of all sin. Chapter 65 begins. Kauṇḍinya said: At a certain time, O goddess, the sage Nārada came to see Gajānana, who was seated at ease, after many days. Yet the wealth of that great-souled one does not run out; can it be that through Gajānana's favour that wealth increases? Covered with many wounds, oozing blood, inauspicious, beset by swarms of flies, toothless as though sick. 'Let food be given until I am satisfied; you shall have the merit of a hundred sacrifices, O lord of men.' Then the messengers said to the king: 'Grain is nowhere to be had.' Hearing the messengers' words, while the father stood with face downcast...

By him one unprecedented fruit was offered to Śaṅkara; Gaṇapati asked for it, and Kumāra too, from Śambhu. I wish to hear also the reason for the offering of dūrvā shoots: for what reason are dūrvā shoots dear to the lord of Gaṇas? Tell me. Who would be competent to tell that? Yet we shall speak according to our ability — of him whom Brahmā, Śiva and the rest are always praising. Tell me all that in detail, quickly, O great sage. Nārada said: The question having thus been put by her, Kauṇḍinya, the best of sages... Having prostrated with the eight limbs, he said: 'Our birth is fruitful, for by heaps of merit the sight of you has come about, O Gajānana.'

'To whom should this fruit be given?' — Śaṅkara asked me too. I then said to him: 'to the strong one, to Kumāra.' Brahmā said: Come, I shall tell you the fruit that belongs to the lord of Gaṇas in the offering of dūrvā shoots; let that be heard, O best of kings. Who could plainly declare the greatness of that lord of Gaṇas, or his sport in this way? Yet hear, O sinless ones. Hear the truth that the husband of Śacī spoke, as told by me. Kauṇḍinya said: While that Gajānana, unmoving, stood like a moving child — having said this, the sage joined his palms and stood before him; and (Gajānana), taking his hand with his own hand, seated him on a seat.

That was given to him by Śiva, and the Elephant-Faced One grew angry. Then Brahmā, having gone to his own abode, desired to create. || The greatness of dūrvā-shoots is not known by sages or by gods; it is not obtained by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, vows, or oblations. || Unshakable like the fire of time, that Anala demon came on; in that instant even the unmoving (earth), together with its mountains, trembled.

But the moon (was) stained, wretched, sunk in a heart full of anxiety. || In (him who is) endowed with the powers of minuteness and the rest, the cause of the cause of the world … || The two sat down for the sake of the ancient lore, each following the other's mind; and just then there came a brahmin, Madhusūdana, || ever desirous of alms, meditating on the supreme Lord, a worshipper of Gaṇeśa, endowed with the power of austerity. || Very delightful was (the place) to the south of his village. || "He would burn the three worlds in his belly" — such was the fierce wonder seen. Then Śakra gave the moon for the quieting of that fire. || He gives much wealth to the poor, the blind and the wretched; whatever is asked by suppliants, that is given by him.

"How, alas, am I to make my word void? And I cannot bring myself to abandon those who have come to me for refuge." || Some desire pleasure, some desire sons, liberation, wealth. || And once, on the fourth day of the month of Bhādra, in house after house … || Just then all those members of the assembly went to Viṣṇu, having made manifold praise with various hymns as best they could. || What is obtained by fierce austerities and observances, even amassed through a crore of births — that, O sages, O gods, is obtained by dūrvās. || "O messengers, let it be reported to the king that I, a guest, have arrived — a brahmin, hungry, old, longing for the food he desires."

(Such a one) becomes accursed from the sight of the moon, and shares in great sorrow. Having heard that speech of his, all the gods rejoiced. Then she went to the temple, having taken fire in her hand. There too some struck her, and they were driven off by the yogins. Homage to you of all forms, homage be to you, witness of all; homage to the great god, homage to you, origin of the world. Having given boons many times over, he shut (himself in), bearing the form of a child. "Queller of the fire of time" — thus they addressed him. That aged brahmin, oozing blood and streaming with sweat — Janaka pondered: is it the Lord who has taken a form?

She, kindling a fire with grasses and warming her limbs — suddenly, by the wind, a single sprout of dūrvā grass came forward then. Homage to you, treasury of compassion, cause of the world's protection; homage to you, the utterly full, doer of the destruction of all. When the temple had been built, all, having installed the elephant-faced image, joyfully gave him the name "This one is the remover of obstacles." They said to him: You are the greater fool, who laughed at the elephant-faced one. By you, the chief offender, the three worlds have been flung into distress. By the conjunction of fate he fell upon the head of the lord of hosts; that ass, dead of cold, then went to the temple. Homage to you, granter of boons to devotees, homage and homage to the giver of all; homage to you, refuge of the refugeless, fulfiller of every desire. In the god who is lord of the three worlds, ordainer of the triple world, imperishable, without qualities, eternal, having the supreme brahman as his form — then a bull, loosed from the plough, came by fate to the temple of the lord of hosts, by the force of what was destined. Homage to you who know the Veda, homage to you who made the Veda. To what other refuge shall we go? Who indeed could be our remover of fear? Since victory was won by him, the city too bore the name Vijayā; and the obstacles of all were destroyed, and so he became "remover of obstacles." The brahmin said: Having heard your fame, white as the moon's rays, I have come. Give me food, O king; I have long been sorely hungry.

By us, with the utmost pains, that lord was made gracious. On the fourth of Bhādrapada you are never to be looked upon. With their two kicks and their two horns, close to the elephant-faced one — from the mouths of those two they fell then upon his trunk and his foot. He, as instructed by the moon, with the utmost concentration performed most terrible austerity for ten and twelve years. By people troubled by fear of the touch of the caṇḍāla woman and of the ass, the elephant-faced one was bathed with water of the sacred ford consecrated with mantras, and worshipped with supreme devotion with many kinds of substances, again and again. Wearing red garlands and garments, smeared with red sandal, four-armed, huge of body, his form red as vermilion — as those three wandered and cried out with dreadful cries, then the heart of Vikaṭa, god of gods, was moved. Assuming utmost firmness, with joined palms, before (him) he reasoned in his mind: this is probably the elephant-faced one. Very many circumambulations were made, among the wicked as among the good. On the bright fourth of Bhādra let one offer me a single dūrvā. Thus do we know it: it is brahman itself bearing the form of a child, (come) for those who, from terror of the demon Anala, had abandoned their rites and stood idle. But this person in brahmin form, the all-devouring guest — he attained no satisfaction, even when those things had been eaten.

The moon said: I bow to that elephant-faced god, who removes every obstacle of men, who extends all dharma, wealth and pleasure — homage to him, the destroyer of obstacles. Thus the god sent a celestial car, distinguished by his own attendants bearing their proper forms, with troops of gandharvas and apsarases. With laughing face he spoke to all the gods and sages. The boy said: You are endowed with knowledge; what has been said is nothing but the truth. Saying "so be it," the brahmin went, still unsatisfied, from house to house; "let food be given," he said, and those people then went to him.

O treasury of compassion, O god made of brahman, self of the universe, skilled in ordaining the universe, seed of the universe, made of the world, doer of the destruction of the three worlds — homage to you. "It is precisely for the slaying of that wicked one, the tormentor of others, that by my own will, in a child's form, I came swiftly, O gods and sages." "All the grain in everyone's house has been gathered by the king; you have devoured the whole of it, brahmin. Let you go where you please."

To him who is made of the triple Veda, giver of all intelligence, lamp of intelligence, lord of the gods, eternal, real, of eternal intelligence, ever without craving — homage be, forever. (The car was) furnished with masses of musical instruments, with flowers and with fragrances, joined with divine delights, adorned with pennons and banners. Those attendants, bearing the form of the elephant-faced, took them and placed them in that car with divine bodies full of joy. "I shall tell you a means for his slaying; do it, O sinless ones: by all of you, on seeing him, I must be forcibly pushed forward." The brahmin said: His fame is heard in the worlds; there is no giver greater than Janaka. I have come desiring satisfaction; unsatisfied, how am I to go?

The offence was committed through the fault of ignorance; you, being a doer of mercy, ought to forgive it. And in abandoning one who has come for refuge the fault would be yours too, O great one; show me compassion. By the command of the elephant-faced one I swiftly conveyed him to his abode; and as all the worlds looked on, wonder arose in their hearts. A very great marvel of his and of mine is to be seen. Hearing this compassionate speech, they were all filled with joy. While the worlds were silent he wandered about, and he saw the fine mansion of the two brahmins Virocana and Triśiras.

Brahmā said: Having heard that speech of his, the elephant-faced one was well pleased; the god, greatly delighted by his praise and prostration, gave him boons. And they said: "By their former merit this is their destiny." Then some lords of yoga, abandoning their meditation, went to the hosts. All said to one another: We do not know his power; is it the Lord in a child's form, to accomplish his slaying? He entered into the midst of it, like the master of the house by his very presence — (a house) bare of all furnishings, devoid of metal vessels.
