Bhṛgu said: Thus, O king, the whole greatness (of it) has been told by you by me; and hear again what was heard by Vyāsa from Brahmā's mouth. — Whose wife, of meritorious conduct, was named Puṇyaśālinī, whose equal in beauty there was not in the circle of the three worlds. — Once that king, surrounded by ministers who were the best of heroes, seated in the royal assembly, saw one moving through the sky. Then the messengers came and reported to the king: "That aerial car, great king, is accompanied by a merit-working god," fitted with various ornaments, attended by all the hosts of gods. With hands folded in a cup the king spoke to the slayer of Bala (Indra) — having mounted the excellent aerial car, swift as mind and wind, and having seen and worshipped the sage who had the form of the elephant-faced one. Śakra said: Well then, I shall tell you this ancient tale, how he too (attained) likeness to the Lord of Hosts through devotion. Once he was driven a yojana at someone's back; he went far from there, stumbled and fell on the ground. He plunged (into the water) there merely to remove his fatigue; then, going to his own country, he saw Mudgala on the road. That chief of sages laughed on seeing him in such a state, and, self-controlled, asked: "Why have your weapons dropped away? Tell why all of them, though fastened, have fallen." Indra said: By bathing in Gaṇeśa's tīrtha and by beholding the sage, he, endowed with knowledge and detachment, spoke (these) words to Mudgala: The fisherman said: I consider it the highest marvel: by bathing in the pool my mind became reversed, O brahman, and especially by the sight of you. From childhood my mind was evil, given to sin; countless sins have been committed (by me) up to today, O lord. Only now has my mind become disgusted (with the world), by your grace; I shall not take up again these weapons of mine that have fallen. Śakra said: Then the fisherman called Nāma, instructed by Mudgala, stood despairing of life when that sage had vanished. The fire arising from his eyes went to the sky like lightning, and, poised to burn the three worlds, was checked by the sage — "You alone are the Lord of Hosts, you are to be worshipped by us, O sage." And he worshipped them all, bowed to them, and dismissed them. Beginning of chapter 58: Brahmā said: Having heard thus the excellent speech of Indra, Śūrasena again asked him, O Vyāsa, having drunk in the nectar of the tale — (he who was) of conquered senses, of measured food, a servant of gods and brahmins — whose (host) of horse-, elephant- and foot-warriors, chariot-fighters and all archers... He said to the father of Kṛtavīrya, who dwelt in the world of the fathers, "Because of sonlessness he has gone to death; a son of yours exists." Observing by concentration, that Bhruśuṇḍī, knower of the unseen, having meditated on the god Gajānana, holding pure water in his hand — Beginning of chapter 59: The king said: When, having come out of Kumbhīpāka, they went to heaven, what expedient did the father of Kṛtavīrya then employ? Once, having deliberated, twelve peaceable brahmins were killed by him on the road out of greed and abandoned by him inside a cave. "He will duly obtain a son; then he will be released from the sin." The king said: How is it done, O brahman, in which month is the vow (to be done), O auspicious one? At moonrise, by the offering of arghya with mantras to the tithi, then to Gajānana, and after that to the moon. And one should eat sesame in Māgha, ghee and sugar in Phālguna, the five cow-products in the month of Caitra, śatapatrikā in Vaiśākha. Beginning of chapter 60: Brahmā said: Hear attentively, O lord of the earth, the greatness of Aṅgāraka-caturthī; I shall tell it in brief. The Earth said: The seed of the sage Bhāradvāja, having been spilled, came into me; from that you were born, O son, and were reared by me auspiciously — with a lovely trunk, a gleaming tusk, winnowing-fan ears with earrings, resembling ten million suns, adorned with various ornaments. "May my welfare-bringing name attain fame in the three worlds; the sight of me has come to you on the fourth, giving merit, O mighty one." Then the god Vināyaka sent an excellent aerial car with his own attendants to bring Bhauma (Mars) near.

Somakānta said: How was it heard from Brahmā's mouth by Vyāsa of measureless understanding? I do not attain satisfaction; tell me that, O great sage — that sight of you (has come) to me together with my retinue in the world of mortals, you to whom the worlds are subject, and the gods beginning with Brahmā and Īśāna. You are to be seen (only) by a hundred horse-sacrifices, and never otherwise; I do not know by what merit he has today been seen by all people. In the regions of the Daṇḍaka forest, in a city named Nandurā, there was a single wicked fisherman, famed by the very name Nāma. Nowhere is association with a good man found to be fruitless, O great sage, just as the contact of the elixir with metals is not fruitless. Śakra said: Thus addressed, that Mudgala, filled with compassion, said to him — seeing especially the fault in abandoning one who has come for refuge — he taught (him) the name-mantra "gaṇeśāya namaḥ." Śūrasena said: By what means, O lord of gods, would your vehicle travel the sky? Effect that means, O mighty one, or say what I am to do for you. Śakra said: He quickly went to Brahmā's world and saw the lotus-seated one, grieved, having heard from Nārada of the cutting off of his own line. In the city of Avantī, O king, (there was) the great sage Bhāradvāja, wise, a knower of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, versed in all the śāstras.

Bhṛgu said: Having heard the tale thus, Vyāsa respectfully asked Brahmā, and he too told it respectfully to the questioner, O sinless one. From boyhood he was given to theft, in youth a doer of adulterous deeds; ... (he lost his sight?) before their eyes, and in respect of maintaining (his) oaths (too). Without food, without effort, with the host of senses conquered, self-controlled: thus at the end of a thousand years that staff sprouted. Then he, whose body was wrapped in an anthill and covered with a net of creepers, waited for the sage's coming. The highest austerity, hard to practise for all sages, was undertaken; it was noticed then by the mere eye of the striving sage. The best of sages declared that he had a divine body forever, having attained likeness to Gaṇeśa, having come to (two) hands — two-handed and muttering the auspicious name of Vināyaka; then, when his eyes were opened, he was awakened by the sage. Brahmā said: Thus the slayer of the gods' foes spoke this word, smiling, to the king who had again put a question, while all the worlds listened. Having bowed, he asked him the cause of the cutting off of his line: "My son is exceedingly righteous, liberal, a performer of sacrifices, ever devoted to the agnihotra, intent on the study of pupils, a sage who dwells on the river bank, given to religious observance."

Vyāsa said: Tell me again, O Brahman, the supreme tale of the Lord of Hosts; my thirst grows the more to hear the good tale of the Lord of Obstacles. He swears false oaths that cause estrangement of others' hearts; therefore he was expelled from the village, being addicted to gambling and liquor. He too, having bowed to that sage, his own compassionate teacher, embraced him with joy, as a son his father. Indra said: Is there here anyone who performs the vow of Saṅkaṣṭa-caturthī — a brahmin or a kṣatriya — in your city, O best of kings? Devoted to gods and guests, honourable and greatly honouring (others), he made efforts of many kinds for the sake of a son, O Vidhi (Brahmā). At one and the same time an excellent apsaras was seen by him; on seeing her, the great sage Bhāradvāja desired to enjoy her.

Brahmā said: Hear from me, O Vyāsa, another tale, full of wonder, concerning Gajānana, experienced by Śūrasena and the rest. Far away outside (the reach) of people, in a mountain cave in a forest, he stayed on the road with his wife and killed many travellers. Again, seated in the lotus posture, he muttered the one-syllabled mantra, having installed before him a lovely image of Gaṇeśa. With the sixteen services he worshipped (it) day after day; and the hermitage shone with its step-well, lake, trees, creepers and the rest. "By the sight of my image here one will not again be liable to birth; the sonless would get sons, the seeker of learning would obtain knowledge." By the merit made by him in a year, properly given, O ruler of earth ... now ... (text unclear). Even so, why did he have no son, O lord of gods? Having handed the kingdom over to the ministers, he dwelt in the forest living on air. Suddenly, on seeing a lovely woman, the sage became attached to desire; overcome by desire's arrow he fell to the ground.

In the Middle Country there was a very mighty king, Śūrasena, in the pleasant city called Sahasra, a master of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas. Thus he became very rich; he adorned the woman with various ornaments and gratified her, together with her daughter, by his magic. The king said: How, then, is the vow of Saṅkaṣṭa-caturthī done? Tell me, O sage: what merit has it, what fruit, what is its procedure, whose worship (does it involve)? He is left with nothing but bones; he will die today or tomorrow; by what means would his sin from another birth come to dissolution, O lord? The seed of him, whose limbs were exceedingly agitated, spilled; and that seed of his entered the earth through a hole.

Wealthy, handsome, a giver, a sacrificer, a protector of the people; endowed with the three powers, proud, well established in the six (measures of policy). Carrying as weapons a sword and a shield, nooses, an unsurpassed bow, and a staff iron at both ends, with two great quivers full (of arrows), stationed at a treetop or in a hollow, he kills many. By whom was it performed here in the past, in whose performing did success arise? All this, O Śunāśīra (Indra), tell in detail out of kindness. Showing mercy, tell me that means, O lotus-seated one; I shall bring him there for the increase of my own line. Skilled in the deployment of the four expedients, a slayer of foes, possessed of the fourfold army, devoted to brahmins and gods. Goods of many kinds, garments and ornaments he brings and heaps up in his house, and sells them in another city. Śakra said: On this too they relate this ancient tale, the dialogue of Kṛtavīrya with the great-souled Nārada. Having heard such charming speech, Vidhi (Brahmā) spoke thus: "Let the former birth of your son, as told by me, be heard." Through him she deems her own birth blessed, and (so do) her parents and her family. Then he, seven years old, asked his own mother:

He, to whose will the circle of the earth was ever subject, whose city shines on earth surpassing Indra's city. He constantly enjoys sense-objects as he pleases in his own palace; thus, of sinful conduct, he kills even beasts in the forest. There was on earth a mighty king, Kṛtavīrya, truthful in conduct, liberal, a sacrificer, proud, a great chariot-warrior. Formerly, in that very city, there was a low-born man named Sāma, an evildoer beyond measure, the sight of whom destroys merit. "Why is there redness in me, who have taken on a human body? And who is my father, mother? Tell me that now."

By whose qualities of wifely devotion even Arundhatī was put to shame; and even Anasūyā became small (before her) through her practice of freedom from envy. Then, rising with difficulty, the rogue went on very slowly; going along the road he saw the auspicious tīrtha of the Lord of Hosts. There is no counting, O king, of those who dwell in the Sahya-mountain region; in whose palace are golden couches and vessels. Taking all that belonged to him, he came at night to his own house, on the fourth of the dark half of Māgha, at the rising of the moon, O king. An aerial car like fire, surpassingly dazzling to the eyes; the members of the assembly, together with the king, were absorbed in listening to the singing. He went, with his sword raised and unsheathed, up to Mudgala, who was muttering the mantra of the Lord of Hosts together with (his) name. His wife, named Sugandhā, was devoted to dharma, faithful to her husband, holding her husband as her life, most lovely in the three worlds. In (due) time that son of yours met his death in the night, at moonrise, on the fourth of the dark half, O ruler of earth. At her command the Earth then went to her own lovely abode; and Bhāradvāja, having obtained a son, rejoiced and embraced him.

Agitated, they urged messengers on to learn "what, what is it?" Those messengers went forward to see the sun-like celestial car. Then one named Kaivartaka set his mind on killing (him); his weapons melted away, and the sword too, though gripped in a firm fist. Adorned with many ornaments, fortunate, dear to brahmins, gods and guests — thus, O king, that couple came to be without a son. By the merit arising from the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī vow performed (even) in ignorance, he went to Vināyaka's abode, the giver of happiness. O Kuṇḍina, by the mere glance of a certain vaiśya's son, a royal messenger, that celestial car fell to the surface of the earth. And that very instant the mind of that wicked man became otherwise, through the power of Mudgala, devotee of the elephant-faced one. For the sake of a son the two performed all kinds of gifts, vows and austerities, and other observances, and sacrifices with abundant priestly fees. Mounted on an excellent celestial car, gazed at by hosts of apsarases, praised by the sky-travellers, then worshipped with divine flowers. Having taught (him) the Vedas and the treatises, and the auspicious mantra of Gaṇeśa, he said: "Perform the observance long, for the pleasing of Gaṇeśa."

Having told them everything, the two went to an excellent forest; wrapped in bark and hides, the couple stood in austerity. Again they asked him the means of destroying sin. Then Kṛtavīrya would live, or, if dead, would attain heaven. Having said this, Nārada departed; he beholds the marvel on earth. At an auspicious moment and (favourable) moon one should make the beginning of it: twenty-one bathings, preceded by cleaning the teeth. Bhauma said: Homage to you, destroyer of obstacles; homage to you, maker of obstacles; to the lord of gods and demons, the support of all powers.

To the free of affliction, the eternal, the quality-less, the cutter-off of the qualities, homage — O best of the knowers of Brahman, doer of preservation and destruction.

"Where have you gone, and where will you go? Tell me, lord." Śakra said: King, hear the great marvel told to me by Nārada — the supreme (mantra) of Gajānana, which brings men all attainments. Then the fisherman made obeisance to the sage Mudgala. Having come, he told their suffering to Bhrūśuṇḍi. Nārada said: The hosts of gods, Śakra and the rest, and the sages, Kapila and the rest... With a paste of sesame and āmalaka one should bathe at the end of the day; one should mutter the one-syllabled or the six-syllabled, or the Vedic mantra. Thus praised, Gajānana, the supreme Self, his mind well pleased, (spoke).

That I shall tell you; listen with undivided mind, O king. Nārada said: I went, Śakra, to the world of mortals, to the hermitage of Bhrūśuṇḍi, who abides in the very form of Gaṇeśa, reciting day and night. Those who take the form of Heramba go to have sight of him — how then are his parents, his wife, his sons, his daughters and his servants (in hell)? For Gaṇeśa's pleasure one should (recite) his name-mantra as prescribed; one should meditate with steady mind on Gajānana, god of gods. He spoke with gentle speech, greatly gladdening the boy. Gajānana said: I am pleased by your fierce austerity, and by devotion, and by this praise as well.

By that meditation, the wondrous marvel of his form was seen. He was worshipped by that sage, (the god) in the form of Gajānana. He planted his own staff in the ground before him, and said to him with great affection, "Until my coming (back)..." "In Yama's world, in Kumbhīpāka, they are being boiled because of your fault; and you, though possessed of knowledge — how do you not perceive it?" Then within a mere muhūrta one should worship the lord of the Gaṇas with the sixteen services and with food-offerings of many kinds. "Even in your childlike condition, because of your firmness, I grant the boons you desire." Addressed thus, the son of Earth spoke words to Gajānana.

With modakas, cakes, śaṣkulīs, laḍḍus and vaṭakas, with milk-rice, with various foods, with condiments, with things to be licked and sucked. Bhauma said: Blessed is my sight, and my birth too, from beholding (you), lord of the gods; blessed my knowledge, and my family too, O mighty one; blessed today is the earth with its mountains; and blessed is all this austerity, by which the lord of all has been seen; blessed my speech and my dwelling too, by which he has been praised, though out of dullness.

Śakra said: And I, having honoured Nārada and in a moment dismissed him, went with the greatest eagerness to see the sage of such a kind. "Evening and morning give water at the foot of the staff without ceasing. Make effort, great sage, at the deliverance of your ancestors." Śakra said: Bhrūśuṇḍi, exceedingly tormented, hearing the words uttered by the sage, grieved with grief for his fathers, blazed fiercely like fire, and thought of a means that would bring about their deliverance. Then he gave (as) the blessing the Saṃkaṣṭa-caturthī, born of the vow — with fruits of many kinds, with areca and betel, with priestly fees and the rest, with twenty-one dūrvā shoots, and with lamps and flowers. "If you are pleased, lord of gods, let my dwelling be in heaven; I wish to drink the nectar together with the gods, Gajānana."

Then, having prostrated to Bhrūśuṇḍi and accepted his worship, he set out with his retinue, wishing to go to Amarāvatī. Seated in one seat in the forest, he recited the name-mantra, setting the sage's staff before him, resorting to the shade of a tree. Referring to his ancestors, entreating the god Gajānana, he spoke. Bhrūśuṇḍi said: If your vow has been performed by me with devotion, O Gaṇanātha... Having presented the worship, having bowed and begged forgiveness, then again one should devotedly feed twenty-one brahmins, or according to one's means. ६।।

6|| utsādya tasya dehasthaṃ valmīkaṃ munisattamaḥ | maṃtritena jalenāsya siṣecāṃgaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ janmāvadhi kṛtaṃ yena saṃkaṣṭaṃ vratamādarāt | śeṣo'pi tasya puṇyasya saṃkhyā kartuṃ na vai kṣama: dārān putrān dhanaṃ rājyaṃ labhate nātra saṃśayaḥ | śravaṇādiṣu māseṣu ghṛtalaḍḍavādikaṃ pṛthak tatastu maṃgale devaṃ sthāpayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ | śuṃḍāmukhaṃ daśabhujaṃ sarvāvayavasuṃdaram

Having removed the anthill that stood on his body, the best of sages sprinkled his limbs all over with consecrated water. He by whom the Saṃkaṣṭa vow has been performed with reverence from birth onward — even Śeṣa is not able to make a count of that merit. He obtains wives, sons, wealth, a kingdom; there is no doubt in this. In the months beginning with Śrāvaṇa, ghee-laddus and the like separately. Then on a Tuesday he devotedly installed the god, trunk-faced, ten-armed, beautiful in all his limbs.

atastasya prabhāvena vimānaṃ pracalenmama bhakṣeyadvarṣaparyantaṃ tasya siddhiranuttamā | śrāvaṇe sapta laḍḍūkā nabhasye dadhibhakṣaṇam prāsādaṃ kārayāmāsa gajānanamudāvaham | saṃjñā maṃgalamūrtīti devadevasya so'karot

Therefore by his power my aerial car would move. If he eats (thus) for a whole year, his attainment is unsurpassed. In Śrāvaṇa, seven laddus; in Bhādrapada, the eating of curds. He had a temple built, one bringing great joy, for the elephant-faced one; and he made the name of the god of gods 'Maṅgalamūrti'.

And in Āśvina, fasting; in Kārtika, the drinking of milk; in Mārgaśīrṣa, abstention from food; in Pauṣa, the drinking of cow's urine. Thereafter that sacred field became a granter of wishes for all people, giving complete release through observance, through worship, and through sight (of it).

In Jyeṣṭha, the eating of ghee; in Āṣāḍha, the eating of honey. Kṛtavīrya's father said: But why is a special (rule) declared for the Aṅgāraka Fourth? They went and brought that Bhauma by force, with that very body, into the presence of Gaṇeśa, O king; that was like a marvel.

1 || upadiṣye mudgalena nāma kaivartakastadā | valmīkāt punarutpannaṃ mānayāmāsa taṃ sutam vada tvaṃ kṛpayā brahman praśrayāvanatāya me | śṛṇvato na ca me tṛptirgajānana kathāṃ śubhām tato bhaumo'bhavat khyātaḥ trailokye sacarācare | yato bhaumena saṃkaṣṭacaturthī bhaumasaṃyutā

...instructed by Mudgala. The fisherman then, (seeing the child) born again from the anthill, honoured him as his son. Tell me, O brahman, out of compassion, to me who am bowed down in humility; I have no satiety, O Gajānana, in hearing the auspicious tale. Thereafter Bhauma became renowned in the three worlds with all that moves and does not move; for it was through Bhauma that the Saṃkaṣṭa Fourth (came to be) conjoined with Tuesday.

The sage Mudgala reverently performed his naming rite: 'Bhruśuṇḍī' — thereafter, O king; and heaven was won, and the drinking of nectar together with the gods. Hence the Fourth conjoined with Aṅgāraka (Mars/Tuesday) is renowned on earth.

ekākṣaraṃ ca mantraṃ ca tasmai prāhātha mudgala cintiārthapradānena cintāmaṇiriti prathām | prayāto maṃgalamūrtiḥ sarvānugrahakārakaḥ

And then he uttered to him the single-syllable mantra, O Mudgala. Through the granting of whatever is thought of, (there arose) the fame of the name 'Cintāmaṇi'. Maṅgalamūrti, who shows favour to all, departed.

Afterwards he gave him boons: 'Become the best of sages; become most worthy of worship by Indra and the other gods, by gandharvas and siddhas.' To the west of the city Pārinera he became renowned, known as Cintāmaṇi, the averter of all obstacles.

Just as the god Gajānana, when meditated upon and when seen, is a destroyer of sin, so too, O sage, become you renowned as Bhrūśuṇḍi. Nowadays he is worshipped by siddhas and gandharvas at the rising of the moon; he grants the objects desired — sons, grandsons and such prosperity.

While Mudgala was thus granting him boons of many kinds, Indra and the others, and the sages Nārada and the rest, came to see (him).
