Chapter 51 begins. Pārvatī said: Father, I am now delighted by the nectar of your speech; but I have a doubt — dispel it, Himālaya. I reach no satiety, father, drinking it again and again as though it were nectar. Now tell me, god, the vow that grants every aim. Having duly gratified him with water for the feet, water for rinsing, garments and the like, and with still greater ornaments, one should begin the vow with (his) permission. One should perform the fire-oblation with half of that, or half of that again, or a tenth part, meditating untiringly day and night on the elephant-faced god. One should place unguent in (his) hand, and fruit and betel; one should give a golden fee, an umbrella, a fan and a chowrie. He protected the earth to the ocean's limits by his own splendour — he by whose virtues the gods were carried away, who stand ever in his assembly. Afflicted by exceedingly harsh words and by wife and children, without asking your sons and wives you went to the deep forest. They are released from all sorrows and have attained the unsurpassed accomplishment. (The vow) of the boon-giving Gaṇeśa brings about dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation. Him who has the universe for form, who is beginningless, the cause of all causes — worship him with effort and you will be freed from all suffering. Śiva said: hearing Bhṛgu's words thus, Kardama, brimming with joy, the king did all that Bhṛgu had said. Chapter 52 begins. Pārvatī said: Why was this done by Nala, and who was Nala? Tell me, father. My mind comes to rest as I listen to the tale. In loftiness like Meru, in depth equal to the ocean — once that great-minded King Nala was seated. The king said: I myself am astonished, brahmin, beholding my own splendour: by what merit or by what austerity did this come to me? Make an image of Gaṇeśa of clay, fair to look upon; perform the worship by the rule stated before; listen to the story. Gifts were given in thought, all of them, for the god's pleasure; he joyfully built a very costly temple of Gaṇeśa. Chapter 53 begins. Himavān said: Now I shall tell what was done by King Candrāṅgada, and by his wife Indumatī, O fair-faced one. Mounted swiftly on a horse, bearing arrow and bow, strong, surrounded by such throngs of heroes, by ministers and servants; terrified with fear of the demoness he entered the great water. What you ladies asked, when he had been brought here, that has been told. But the demoness, drinking the water, went for his sake into that lake; having devoured the water-creatures she was not at all satisfied then. Neither in this world nor in the next is there happiness for women of good family who are without husbands, O god — this (happiness) that is (only) with the husband. Chapter 54 begins. Pārvatī said: When she had fainted, what did the people do then? Tell me that at length, father, delighting my heart. He who knows past and future will tell it all; and thereafter whatever is to be done, all that we shall do. She had music played and sugar (distributed) in house after house, and then the auspicious Indumatī sent it out in joy. Truly I speak to you, in truth; my speech is not otherwise. Himavān said: thus addressed by that sage, she reverently began the vow. Chapter 55 begins. Himavān said: In Pātāla the minds of the nāga maidens then became otherwise. Then, putting the ministers in front, she sent the troops out to him, and adorned that city with bright banners and flags. Wiping their eyes well, brimming with tears of joy, filled with joy and grief the two then spoke to each other. The two told each their own sorrow, lamenting again and again; accompanied by the chaplain the two then slept happily. By the grace of the boon-giver your sight has been obtained.

Himavān said: Formerly among the Niṣadhas there was a great king named Nala — devoted to brahmins, a knower of the Veda, valiant, generous, honoured, wealthy, sage-like. In the Mālava country there was a famed city named Karṇa; there was a king Candrāṅgada of surpassing valour. Himavān said: Then all the citizens, skilled in various speech, wiping away their own tears, consoled the king's wife. They released the king and worshipped him according to rule, with garments and ornaments and with jewels of many kinds and great worth.

By whom and by whom was this vow performed of old, O mountain-bearer? And by whom, and to whom, (was) the tale (told), and what accomplishment did he obtain from it? Tell me this in detail, to cut off my doubt. And he who asks, and he who tells, the auspicious tales of Gajānana — (they are blessed). A chariot-fighter, sword-bearer, archer, quiver-bearer, mailed, strong, skilled in weapons, honoured by the gods, moving through the three worlds, pure; endowed with the powers beginning with aṇimā, knowing the true meaning of all the scriptures, a sacrificer, a giver, of great knowledge, master of the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas. The people said: Mother, rise, do not grieve, do not (act so) toward your son; tears of grief burn the departed, therefore do what benefits your husband. Then, giving a horse swift as thought, they sent the king off; coming out of the pond and tying the horse to a great tree...

And whatever other mortal hears it — those three have a share in merit; their life is fruitful, and their birth, knowledge and action. Even Śeṣa falls dumb in trying to describe his virtues. There is no counting of his horses, elephants and chariot-fighters. His assembly hall surpassed the more-than-human Sudharmā; it steals the eye's power of sight with rays like those of the sunstone. Among mortals no one long-lived has been seen, fair-faced one; just as people cast off a worn garment and take another... While the king was bathing he was seen by a few citizens; others, approaching him, asked, 'Who are you?'

Brahmā said: Questioned thus by her, Himavān spoke: the vow of the boon-giving Gaṇeśa, performed by many kinds of people... (the vow) of bowmen, of weapon-bearers, and of bearers of fire-weapons too — from fear of whom the gods, Indra and the rest along with the guardians of the quarters, trembled. Very clear garments, daughter, by resting against jewel-pillars, take on variegation, becoming blue, red and yellow. So too with the body of embodied beings: one is discarded and another fair one is taken. This is a great marvel, good lady: himself standing in the mouth of death... 'Where do you belong, whence have you come, what is your name? Tell us, lord.' Hearing their words, the best of kings asked (them in turn).

Himavān said: Listen, Pārvatī, I shall tell you an ancient dialogue, together with the legend of this vow that brings every accomplishment. His wife was Damayantī, a very abode of beauty — Brahmā, having subdued all (women) and taken their essence (made her). Exceedingly virtuous, greatly blessed, devoted to serving her husband, righteous in conduct, intent on vows, waiting on her mother- and father-in-law. A man grieves for another who has died, though he himself is subject to death; a person does not know the separation from his own body that is to come. Filled with grief (he asked) about the welfare of Indumatī and of the prince; then they recognised him, and the people joyfully embraced him.

On Kailāsa, best of mountains, (they saw) the world's teacher seated at ease, sporting joyfully with gods, gandharvas and great sages. She was renowned as Damayantī, since she was fashioned by that (subduing); to Damayantī he gave the loveliness of (all) the women in the three worlds. Unflurried in household duties, a worshipper of gods and guests, known by the name Indumatī, beautiful in every limb. Though righteous in conduct, the king was much entreated by his ministers: 'Give up the slaughter of living beings, the greatly terrible sin of the hunt.' He reckons all that is his to stand under the sway of fate and time — the whole universe from Brahmā down to immovable things, with the oceans, moving and unmoving. And they said: 'King, your wife, having bathed, has now gone home; keeping a fasting-vow, thin, with her veins showing.'

Bowing and praising, the greatly splendid six-faced one asked (his question). Equipped with many ornaments, adorned with many jewels, her throat bright with a pearl necklace, rich in good qualities, most lovely. Once, by the working of fate, he went to enjoy the hunt — to a forest full of hyenas, deer, boars, beasts and birds. Knowing him to be perishable, cast off grief and rise, O mother of a good son; your husband, righteous and of meritorious conduct, will attain liberation. Resting her life upon her son, she was left with nothing but life. And some, going to the city, proclaimed the good news.

Skanda said: God of gods, lord of the world, giver of fearlessness to the devoted, by your grace many divine tales have been heard. He had a great minister, lotus-handed, valorous, equal to Bṛhaspati in intellect and to Aṅgiras in policy; clad in a blue jacket, with blue turban and upper cloth, wearing a bound leather finger-guard, carrying knife, sword and shield. If he is alive and in heaven, then he will come at some time; through very great merits even a man who has gone to heaven comes again. Or else let us ask some sage who has come here. Hearing from very trusted people that the king had come, she was plunged in an ocean of joy, like a knower of Brahman, a master of yoga.

By whose performance the accomplishments come into the hands of men, of practitioners, by the grace of the boon-giver. He sat in the assembly hall, in the midst of the circle of kings; before him danced apsarases, lovely to see. Killing deer and boars and sending them off to the city, the king, roaming in the forest, was seen by the chief demons. Himavān said: thus admonished by the people, Indumatī was for a moment consoled by all their words, and wiped her tears with her garment. She had the streets sprinkled, and having carefully prepared the halls she adorned herself with garments, ornaments and jewellery.

Śiva said: Well have you asked, Skanda — it brings benefit to all; out of affection for you I shall tell it, the giver of great accomplishment on earth. The bards praise him, together with the throng of brahmin-sages. At that very time Gautama came to the king. He trembled on seeing the demons, as if seized by a chill fever — with cavern-like mouths, pit-like eyes, and gaping jaws that touched the sky. Then she dismissed all the people who had gathered; casting off the marks of a wedded wife, she became utterly emaciated. Having pleased many brahmins with gifts of cows, land, gold and the like, placing the lamp-offering in the hand, as (for) a husband, of the women.

It is dear to Vināyaka, my son, the best of vows, the accomplisher of all the aims of man, O son of the Kṛttikās. He rose and was respectfully seated by the king on his own seat, and worshipped with the highest devotion; then Nala asked him. On seeing them, all the heroes and the attendants too fled; some went to Yama's abode, and some fell to the ground in a faint. She stood weeping, grieving, sighing, again and again fainting. Then, at the end of twelve years, Nārada of divine appearance approached before the city with the sound of song and instruments; and the ministers, going out to meet him, bowed to that best of kings...

Without sacrifices, without gifts, without recitation and oblation and the rest, it accomplishes everything, Skanda, and increases sons and grandsons. Nala said: Lord, I have been favoured by the sight of you, great sage; my birth, my kingdom, my father, mother, family and life (are fulfilled) today. There one cruel demoness, seeing that king exceedingly handsome, embraced him and kissed him, deluded by desire. The sage, wandering at will, came to her house; seeing him, she at once lamented, telling of what had befallen her husband. All joyfully embraced him and bowed in due order; and when the king was seated, they sat at his command.

By the power of this vow a man is freed in a moment from the great sins and lesser sins amassed over many births. The gods in heaven praise him — Brahmā, Indra, Hari, the trident-bearer: 'You are blessed; though dwelling in the world of mortals you are extolled by mortals and by gods.' He sank in the middle of the lake, and the demoness did not see him; he was taken hold of by the nāga maidens and brought to a mansion in Pātāla. Nārada said: Your husband is alive somewhere; you should not grieve for him. Cover your head with a blue cloth, (and put on) your ear-ornaments. The best of kings went himself to the camp with Indumatī, and had the rite performed by brahmins who had seen twelve years (of study).

Show favour, sage, tell me that means, be it vow, gift, or austerity, even if it be hard to accomplish. — surrounded by foot-attendants, resplendent with four bells; a hundred staff-bearers went before him, holding (the crowd) back.

Having sat upon a pure seat and worshipped the Lord of the Hosts, one should then begin the vow by the way taught by the guru. Hearing their words, the best of kings said: I hold the vow of one wife, mothers; how shall I abandon it? Nārada said: I shall tell you in brief the supreme vow: one should begin it on the bright fourth of the month of Nabhas (Śrāvaṇa) with the highest joy. Bearers of fire and weapons, and riders of horses and chariots, in great numbers; on the king's left and right a hundred thousand elephants moved lightly.

On the fourth of Śrāvaṇa, having made a clay image of Gaṇeśa, one should worship it every day until the fourth of Bhādra. Then, as you wandered and wandered in the forest, there was seen by you the āśrama of Kauśika, the treasury of austerity, tended with cool waters, with lakes and lotuses, and resounding with the sound of Vedic recitation; going there, you bowed to that sage in a spirit of devotion. I declare to you the duties of kings born in the lunar line: another's property, injury to another, and likewise another's wives (are to be shunned). In a river, a tank, or a pond, first cleaning the teeth, perform the bath at dawn, preceded by the resolve. Actors, dancing women, players of instruments and bards in front; then, after them, the elephant-troops entered the city reverently.

Abiding in the vow of chastity, the excellent vow is to be performed, with fasting, with a single meal, with a night meal, or with unsolicited food. Raised up by Kauśika, who was compassionate to the protectorless and wretched, and knowing you to be sorrowful, he pronounced a blessing. Kings, and gentle good men, do not wish for the censure of others; study, sacrificing, giving, and the protection of those who come for refuge (are their duties). Clad in white, having gone home, one should make with care an excellent, charming, four-armed clay image of Gaṇeśa. When the sun was covered by the dust of the army and its brightness destroyed, nothing at all could be discerned in that adorned city.

Gajānana, my lord of gods, will be a doer of good to you: hearing that gentle blessing, you attained the highest joy. There is to be no doing of what is forbidden, and observance is for the sake of the injunction; these are the duties of the three classes, while for the twice-born there are the three beginning with officiating at sacrifices. With the sixteen services one should worship with steady mind; one should oneself, with effort, take a single kind of food or a single meal, or else fast, until the fourth of Bhādra. Then, bowing to one another, they went each to his own dwelling; the chief ones were brought to the king's house and again honoured by the king.

Hospitality is held to be supreme and highest for all the classes. Hearing thus the king's word, all the young nāga maidens — with song, instrumental music, dance and the like, and with feeding of brahmins, one should hold a great festival, when means are ample and auspicious — dismissed by him with a gift of garments and betel, went home; and the king, having fed the brahmins, ate together with his kinsmen.

Or of ten syllables, O Skanda, or again of twelve syllables; a hundred thousand or ten thousand repetitions each day is desired. Kauśika told you the worship of Gaṇeśa. Kauśika said: Perform the vow of Gaṇeśa for a month only, O lord of men. They cursed him: 'Be you long separated from your own wife in many ways'; those women, grieved and overcome with desire, bound him with fetters. Perform the vow thus, fair one, and you will meet with your husband; in the underworld, O nāga maiden, he is kept alive though confined, fair one. Day by day for a month only — then you will attain success. The sage said: Hearing this, the king asked that Kauśika again. The lotus-eyed queen heard this account, seated on her couch, from her own messenger, who had been left over from the demoness. When the sage had gone, in the month of Nabhas, after some days had passed, she made an auspicious earthen image of the elephant-faced one. One should adorn the Supreme Lord with ornaments of many kinds, with sandal-paste and unhusked grains, with incense and lamps, and with various food-offerings. In standing, in speaking, in silence, in going, in lying down, in eating — meditating on the god Gajānana, you attained the unsurpassed success. 'Who will delight the subjects, all the worlds, and the children? Has the treasury of virtue set today, the treasury of majesty?' And Pārvatī, overcome with love, spoke to Mahādeva. The goddess said: How did you go, abandoning me? Have you forgotten me?

One should feed the Supreme Lord with vaṭakas, cakes, laḍḍus, fine rice, milk-rice and the like, with the five nectars and with condiments. With many elephants, chariots, horses and the rest, with herds of cattle, with heaped-up wealth, with maidservants and servants, you became prosperous by the power of the vow. 'I see the directions empty without that great one; where shall I see happiness, and where will he too find happiness? By separation from you even a moment has become aeon upon aeon, O lord. This vow of Gaṇeśa, taught by my father, I have performed.'

Having offered the waving of lights and the mantra-flower, one should recite the hymns of praise; having praised with the thousand names, one should then honour the brahmins. Enjoying pleasures at will, in time you went to death, and you have been born in the Niṣadha country as a king named Nala. 'And who will give protection to those who come for refuge, and to the wretched?' Thus in many ways she, wretched, wept, greatly overwhelmed. Brahmā said: At that very time Himavān came near, and reverently placed Satī's hand in his hand.

Having kept awake at night with song, dance and other auspicious things, at bright dawn having bathed and performed the daily rites according to rule — 'Therefore Lakṣmī is unmoving in you, O you praised by the people of the three worlds; now give me leave: what was asked has been set forth.' She tore off her ornaments and cast them far away, and she broke all her bracelets and swooned. Then the gods together with the gandharvas reverently worshipped the elephant-faced one, and then those two auspicious ones, who work the welfare of the good.

One should worship the god as before, and then perform the fire-offering; having offered various substances in the fire, one should perform the honouring of the teacher. Himavān said: When Gautama had gone thus, King Nala performed the vow; faith having arisen in him from that (sage's) word, he made a very beautiful image. The gods' drums sounded, a rain of flowers fell; all bowed to Gajānana and praised him with various hymns.
