Vyāsa said: How did Gaṇeśa impart that thousand of names? Tell me that welfare-giving (thousand), O you who are intent on favouring the world. — Of this great mantra, the nectar-hymn garland of the divine thousand names of the glorious Gaṇeśa: Śrī Mahāgaṇapati is the seer; Śrī Svānandeśa Brahmaṇaspati is the deity; the metres are of various kinds; 'hum' is the seed; 'tuṅgam' is the power; 'svāhāśakti' is the pin; the application in recitation is for the pleasure of Śrī Brahmaṇaspati by way of destroying all obstacles. Now the placings: with 'gaṇeśvaro gaṇakrīḍaḥ', salutation with the two thumbs; with 'kumāragururīśānaḥ', salutation with the two forefingers; with 'brahmāṇḍakumbhaścidvyoma', salutation with the two middle fingers; with 'rakto raktāmbaradharaḥ', salutation with the two ring fingers; with 'sarvasadgurusaṃsevyaḥ', salutation with the two little fingers; with 'luptavighnaḥ subhavanāma', salutation with the palms and backs of the hands. Now the placings beginning with the heart: with 'chandaśchandodbhavaḥ', salutation to the heart; with 'niṣkalo nirmalaḥ', svāhā to the head; with 'sṛṣṭisthitilayakrīḍaḥ', vaṣaṭ to the crown-lock; with 'jñānaṃ vijñānamānandam', hum to the armour; with 'aṣṭāṅgayogaphalabhṛt', vauṣaṭ to the three eyes; with 'anantaśaktisahitam', phaṭ to the weapon. Thus the binding of the directions. Now the meditation: "Three-eyed, mounted on a ruddy lotus that gleams like a boat set on a red ocean; bearing in his arms the noose and the goad, the axe, and the gesture that grants fearlessness; joined with his Śakti, elephant-faced, very broad of belly, together with Siddhi and Buddhi; red, wearing the half-moon on his crest, remover of every fear — I bow to the King of Obstacles." "Salutation to Śrī Svānandeśa Brahmaṇaspati, together with Śrī Siddhi and Buddhi, with Lakṣa and Lābha, with his limbs, with his retinue, with his Śakti, with his weapons, with his vehicle, with his attendant circle." Having worshipped with this name-mantra by the five mental services, one should recite. — Śrī Mahāgaṇapati said: Lord of the hosts; sporting with the hosts; master of the hosts; ruler of the hosts; single-tusked; curved-trunked; elephant-faced; great-bellied. The eldest king; lord of treasures; dear to the lord who is dear to treasures; dwelling within the golden city; moving in the middle of the sun's orb. Overlord of the hosts; victory; steadfast; lord of elephants; bearer of the banner; god of gods; kindler of the life-breath of love; the pin of the wind. Wise; boon-giver; loud of cry; splitting great mountains with his sound; boar-faced; conqueror of death; clothed in a tiger's hide. Arisen from the power of will; protector of the gods; crusher of the demons; sprung from Śambhu's mouth; born of Śambhu's anger; born of Śambhu's laughter. Śambhu's splendour; remover of Śivā's sorrow; bringer of joy to Gaurī; born from the dirt of Umā's limb; born of Gaurī's radiance; born of the heavenly river. Of intoxicated body; of great roar; mountain-bodied; of auspicious face; the self of all; the self of all the gods; whose head is Brahmā, whose ears are the quarters. Whose foot is raised upon Tīvrā's head; caressed by Jvālinī's crown; whose throne's splendour is gladdened by Nandā; whose seat is adorned by Bhogadā. Complete in every limb; marked with every auspicious mark; rich in the beauty of all adornments; endowed with all beauty. At whose feet Madanāvatī has taken refuge; who made the ill-faced fair-faced; whose service, wakeful and flowing with rapture, is alarmed at the sprouting up of obstacles. The resort of Sarasvatī; the delight of Gaurī; the abode of Śrī; bestower of the guru's secret; accomplished in speech; lord of Vāgīśvarī. Destroyer of the obstacles of the Ikṣvākus; desired as 'what is to be done'; crowned as Īśāna; Īśāna; dear to Īśāna; destroyer of calamities. Leader of the hosts, shaped like a kadamba ball and a gourd; of a body of compassion; tawny; the narrator; wearer of the waist-cord. The material source of the principles; the principle itself; determined by the word 'principle'; abiding between the stars; the deliverer; the ender of Tāraka. Vaster than the vast; beyond brahman; dear to the pious and to the knowers of brahman; who gives Lakṣmī by a movement of his brow; Bharga; auspicious; remover of fear. Maker of fame; attainable by yoga; the sacrificer; dear to those who ask; the essence; fond of essence; savoury; the delighter; worshipped by Rāvaṇa. The ruler; dwelling at the tip of the flame; the refuge; lord of Śambara; garlanded with the flowers of the six seasons; having six supports; of six syllables. Physician of the round of rebirth; all-knowing; the medicine of all medicines; who plays at creation, maintenance and dissolution; splitter of the divine elephant. The ascendant; the hour; the wheel of time; Meru; the seven seers; the pole star; Rāhu; Mars; Venus; Jupiter; Mercury; Mars; the moon; the sun. Of two forms; two-armed; two-eyed; two-tusked; guardian of the island; having two mothers; two-faced; free from the pairs; passed beyond duality. Giver of the happiness of a seven-limbed kingdom; honoured by the company of the seven seers; treasury of the seven-leaved (tree); having seven priests; resting on the seven notes. Undivided by the thirteen divisions; the presiding deity of the All-gods; boon-giver to the fourteen Indras; lord of the fourteen Manus. The origin of the thirty-six principles; whose body is the thirty-eight parts; the unimpeded one before whom the group of forty-nine Maruts bows. Honoured by the throng of sixty-four great accomplished yoginīs; the Bhairava-realization of the sixty-eight great pilgrimage places and holy fields. The bodily existence of the eighty-four lakhs of living beings; resembling a crore of suns; spotless as the beams of a crore of moons. — Thus this thousand of the names of Vināyaka has been uttered. The man who reads it every day in the hour of Brahmā... For whose subjection one recites it — a king, a king's wife, a king's son, a minister — that one becomes his servant. It is the quelling of others' spells, the crushing of the enemy's forces; in battle, for all men, this one thing brings victory. Success from its recitation is gained even by women, śūdras and outcastes; this thousand-name mantra is to be recited for obtaining good. With divine fruits answering the wish, with delightful sky-going chariots, in the mansions of the Moon, Indra, the Sun, Upendra, Brahmā, Śarva and the rest — of the form of desire; going at will; granting desires; lord of desire's realm — having enjoyed pleasures as wished together with beloved kinsmen, having attained the highest yogic accomplishment, established in knowledge and detachment, in the ever-risen bliss called supreme bliss... By all gifts whatever and all vows, by all pilgrimages whatever and all sacrifices, one does not obtain that fruit which is had at once by remembrance through Gaṇeśa's thousand names. Whatever man reads this thousand of names daily as the jewel of day rises up, or at evening, or at midday, or at the three junctures, or continually — he becomes foremost in lordship, prevails in words, spreads his fame on high, destroys poverty, brings the world under his sway, and long increases with sons and grandsons. — Beginning of chapter 47: Vyāsa said: When the thousand of names had been received and Gajānana was pleased, what then did Hara do, O Brahman? Tell me that. He gladdened the heroes with garments, garlands, ornaments and wealth. Among the warriors stationed in many vehicles, Tripura himself... Some had their feet broken, some their necks broken, some their bellies split open, others their shoulders and arms severed. The destroyer of the army fell to the ground, crushed by a blow. When all the chief gods had swooned, Maheśvara made a misshapen chariot with the moon and the sun for its wheels and the lotus-born for its driver; the Lord of the Mountain yoked the lord of mountains as his bow and Acyuta as his arrow to the chief horses. Having bowed to Maheśāna, slayer of the demon Tripura, the sages too, free from agitation, became intent each upon his own observance. — Beginning of chapter 48: Vyāsa said: I have heard the great narrative that has the slaying of Tripura for its subject; still I wish to hear where the Mother of the world was dwelling. The Mother of the world became manifest from the mouth of a cave of the Himālaya. She saw a dreadful mountain crowded with lions, tigers and deer. A flower rich with gold and gems, hung with a string of pearls, set beautifully within the parting of her hair; a gold and pearl (ornament) on her nose. Sighing deeply, she became eager to see Śiva; bowing to her father she said, "Tell me a good means." — Beginning of chapter 49: Pārvatī said: O treasury of compassion, lord of mountains, my father, tell me quickly the worship of Gaṇeśa, the lord of all, the teacher of the world. Having oneself made a most lovely auspicious image of Gaṇeśa, complete in all its limbs, resplendent with four arms; and one should place the inner and outer mother-syllables in the way of the Āgamas; one should display the gestures beginning with the invitation of presence in the way of the guru; then, having done the placing of the mantra and also the placing on the six limbs — "Arisen from the wish-granting cow, the supreme life of all, purifying, the cause of sacrifice — this milk of yours is offered for bathing." "And many ornaments set with various gems, of gold, I fasten on each of your limbs at your command." "Together with well-cooked and fried vaṭakas that have been prepared, with modakas, cakes, laḍḍus, śaṣkulīs, maṇḍakas and the rest; with betel mixed with cardamom and clove and saffron — for the sake of the full fruit of a worship whether short or excessive." — Beginning of chapter 50: Pārvatī said: I do not know the mantra, O lord of mountains; tell it to me yourself. (By) the grace of Gaṇeśa I go, I go to Śiva, to the auspicious. A mortal may accomplish the unaccomplishable by the full worship of the two images; from worshipping the three images (come) kingdom, gems, all riches. Him alone, the lord of the hosts, one should worship in all one's desires; pleased by the worship of him alone, would not the god himself be so? For the satisfaction of the Lord of the Hosts, joined with Siddhi and Buddhi, one should not be niggardly with wealth; one should act according to one's means.

Brahmā said: Formerly the god, the foe of the cities, in his undertaking to conquer the three cities, became beset with obstacles because Gaṇeśa had not been worshipped. — Pendulous-bellied; smoke-coloured; huge; leader of obstacles; fair-faced; ill-faced; awakened; king of obstacles; elephant-faced; lord of the island of Cintāmaṇi; dwelling in the grove of wish-trees; standing in the midst of a jewelled pavilion; resting on a jewelled lion-throne. — Brahmā said: By Gaṇeśa's granting of a boon and by the teaching of the names, Śaṅkara, greatly delighted, danced and roared with a mighty sound. — (Pārvatī asked:) How did she become manifest? On what lunar day, and where, was the demon king burnt? Tell all this in full, O grandfather, whereby, approaching Śiva, I shall obtain everlasting welfare; and in the world of mortals too it will be a benefit to people. — Himavān said: The mantras of Gaṇeśa are of many kinds, O goddess, granting various attainments, and are countless; some among them I shall tell you.

Defeated, he asked him the means of quelling obstacles; and Mahāgaṇapati himself, pleased by the worship of Śambhu, (spoke). Nandana, Lampaṭa, Bhīma, Meghanāda, Gaṇaṃjaya; Vināyaka, Virūpākṣa, granter of boons to heroes and warriors; the auspiciousness of all auspicious things, the cause of all causes; ever acting alone, bearing the bow, holding the citron and the mace. Brahmā, Kubera, then Indra, Agni, and Vāyu, Soma, Varuṇa and Aryaman; gandharvas, yakṣas, the planets and kinnaras — all, having bowed to Śiva, were praising (him). Because he was worshipped by all the gods, victorious, the slayer of the gods' foes, therefore on that (day) men on earth make gifts of lamps. Rising at the hour before dawn one should go to the southwestern quarter, having first covered the ground with grass, wood or leaves. Of the one-syllable mantra a hundred thousand, or half that; and of the six-syllable mantra, fixedly, ten thousand.

(It is) the quelling of all obstacles, the granter of the fruit of every desire. Maker of obstacles, with feet set low(?), encircled by the power Drāviṇī; of fierce and ungracious face, his single eye guarded by Jvālinī; roaring with the exhilaration of Vasudhārā, fond of the great conch-treasure; bowed low to the crown of the bowing earth, lord of the lotus-treasure; the retinue of weapons beginning with the thunderbolt, the resort of Gaṇacaṇḍa; attended by victory and defeat, bringing conquest and non-conquest. The gods said: Great god, lord of the world, giver of the world's joy, when shall we see the great demon slain by you? Since the bathing, giving, muttering, oblation and the rest done on that (day) becomes abundant (bahula), therefore it is called Bāhulī. The wise man, while standing, should avoid fertile land and (?) upward-sloping ground; having voided urine and excrement he should perform purification as prescribed. Teacher of Kumāra, son of Īśāna, borne by the mouse; fond of attainment, lord of attainment, attainment itself, Siddhivināyaka; the good pin (kīlaka) of the svāhā-power that generates and protects the universe and the rest; dwelling made in the ocean of nectar, eyes rolling with exhilaration. "We have been driven from our places by that destroyer of the world." Brahmā said: Having thus heard the gods' words, the bearer of the Pināka went forth gladly. But those who do not hold the great festival of the foe of Tripura on that (day) nowhere obtain victory; their merit is burnt away. Having cleansed teeth and tongue, one should then go to bathe — to a river, a tank, a step-well, a lake, or even a well. Thus they mutter mantras of many kinds for the accomplishment of their desires. But you, Pārvatī, hear my words with a one-pointed mind.

Meditating on Gaṇeśa in his mind, resolved on battle, swiftly reaching (his) abode, accompanied by gods and gandharvas. Born of the Kūṣmāṇḍa Sāman, hard to conquer, conqueror of the burden(?), victorious; lord of the earth, lord of the world, imperishable lord of beings. Meanwhile the affair was fully reported to the demon by his spies: "The husband of the mountain-born has come with the army of the gods to fight." Sin done from birth (is destroyed) by worship at midday, and sin gathered in seven births by worship at dusk, O sage. By whose blow of the hand the ocean's waters were scattered, breaker of Pūṣan's teeth; delighting in play on Umā's lap, giver of release, protector of the family. The great demon mounted (his car), making the quarters and intermediate quarters resound; then a great battle arose between the two armies. But she, not seeing Śiva, her mind distraught with separation, lamented much, greatly afraid, (crying) "Alas, father! alas, Śiva!" Having set on the pedestal (an image) beautiful and solid, bearing its own weapons, the axe and the rest, the wise man should then wash his hands and join (them). He who worships four images obtains dharma, wealth, pleasure and release; from the full worship of five images he becomes a universal emperor.

Wearing a diadem, earrings, a necklace and a forest-garland, made of mind; whose splendour has slain the demons by (their) turning away, who shook the earth with a stamp of the foot. By weapons of many kinds and by iron arrows that pierce the vitals a river of blood came to flow, blocking the roads. "How is it that you do not recognise me, being ever the all-knowing Sadāśiva — (me) alone in the terrible forest, crying out like an osprey?" All the materials of worship, water and the rest, carefully — the eight fragrances, unbroken rice, red flowers, guggulu. By the worship of six images one becomes the maker of creation, maintenance and dissolution; by the worship of seven, eight, or nine images one becomes all-knowing.

Newly born, girt with a girdle of golden muñja-grass, remover of ill omens; queller of bad dreams and of the wicked, possessed of qualities, established in sound; whose feet are the seven nether worlds, whose broad sphere is the seven continents; whose crown is the seven heavenly worlds, granter of the boon of the seven steeds. Struck by weapons the warriors looked like kiṃśuka trees in flower; and some, out of settled enmity, killed by seizing (their foes) alive. "When shall I have sight of you? Have you forgotten me? I am not able to keep my life, nor to bear the separation, O Hara!" Some, seizing them by the hair, forcibly cut off the heads of chariot-heroes as they ran, and of horses and elephants too. "Meanwhile where are you? Do you not hear my grief? Without you, to whom shall I go for refuge, or what shall I do?" A ghee-lamp, an oil-lamp, various fine food-offerings, sweetmeats, cakes, laḍḍus, milk-rice with sugar. Purandara, boastful in battle, came with the thunderbolt in his hand; merely seeing the Śatakoṭi (bolt), the daityas and dānavas fled. The fisherman said: A certain girl with full hips, adorned with every ornament, wearing ear-rings on her ears which shone like two discs... Thus, with the requisites gathered, one should station oneself in a solitary place, seated on a seat of cloth, of antelope-skin, or of kuśa grass. On (his) head a crown blazing with the light of many jewels, and on (his) forehead a four-cornered (ornament) adorned with sixteen pearls. One should perform the purification of the elements and the installing of the breaths; first, having bound the directions, let him bow to the gods beginning with Gaṇeśa.
