Vyāsa said: The greatness of Gaṇeśa's holy place has been heard, O lotus-seated one, and the deeds of Rukmāṅgada, O Kauṇḍinya, and of the city's inhabitants. Indra, having become Rukmāṅgada, vanished on that very spot, my son; she thought that Rukmāṅgada had enjoyed her, and thereupon she conceived. Gṛtsamada, having come and been authorized by brahmins versed in astrology — then in his fifth year (his father) performed his initiation. He became a treasury of Veda and scripture, and skilled too in his own duty. Once, at an auspicious moment, the father Vācaknavi taught his son the great Ṛg-mantra beginning "gaṇānāṃ tvā," and said: This great Vedic mantra bestows all attainments, and it is the very best among all the mantras stated in the Āgamas; meditating on the god Elephant-faced, recite it with steady mind. "You are not fit for worship in our presence; go from here to your own hermitage." Hearing these words of Atri, blazing as if kindled by anger... All (the trees), bearing countless fruits, were shunned by living creatures. She too, seized by anger, gave a curse to her son. Brahmā said: The wandering sage saw before him a forest named Puṣpaka, strewn with many trees and creepers, adorned with a wall of flowers. Then the god Vināyaka quickly went to Gṛtsamada, lighting up the universe with his radiance, resembling a thousand suns — with flapping ears, with the play of his great tusk, joyfully sporting sweetly, the moon shining on his brow, with a great lotus-garland, the root of the world's business, with lotus-stalk hands, uniting with those who bow; endowed with Siddhi and Buddhi, glorious, with a splendour exceeding a crore of suns; though of indescribable form, he stood before (him) with Lolā, O sage. Brahmā said: Hearing that speech of his, Vināyaka spoke. Gaṇeśa said: Know me, the lord of the hosts, come to show favour. "And (grant me) pre-eminence among all your devotees, O elephant-faced; and I ask one other boon — give me that, O Śaṃkara." Action done from knowledge of the deity, the seer and the metre is fruitless; "and a son, mighty, causing great terror to all the gods." (Note: in the Puṣpaka palace there are sixty-four pillars; are these sixty-four pillars forms of the sixty-four arts? This is to be investigated.) Vyāsa said: Then what was Gṛtsamada's manner of living, O lord of gods? Tell me that carefully, for I am faithful, O lotus-born. The sage asked the boy, whose waist shone with a lovely girdle: Who are you? whose are you? what do you wish to do? Having thus reflected in his mind, he imparted his own mantra to him, and told him the "gaṇānāṃ tvā," performing the observance with reverence: Recite the Vedic mantra, fixing your mind on the Elephant-faced; when he is pleased with you, son, he will grant all your desires. Having thus obtained the great mantra, he went to the forest for austerity; he stood on one big toe, without food, his senses subdued. "This supreme form of mine, self-luminous, consisting of the world, Brahmā, Rudra and the rest do not know it; whence then shall men know it?" "And I ask you another boon: let this city attain renown by your command, since here severe austerity has been performed by me." Vyāsa said: Then what did Tripura, made proud by the boon, do, O Brahmā? All that marvel you must tell me without remainder. Having thus overrun the sphere of earth, he then went to Amarāvatī. Then Indra, surrounded by the hosts of gods with weapons in their hands... They went and told Śakra the doings of the demon Tripura; hearing their words thus, (he was) like a mountain struck by the thunderbolt, unmoved. There was a great uproar, with trumpetings and neighings, with battle-cries, the noise of chariots and the sound of instruments in many ways. In an instant he fell to the ground; then, rising up swiftly, he struck Śakra with his fist and threw him down upon the earth. He flung Śakra far off, so that he could not be found anywhere; and he himself mounted that four-tusked lord of elephants. Brahmā said: Having overrun the abodes of the gods, the demon went to Brahmā's station. Hearing from the mouth of the gods of the exploit done by the demon... Bhīma too, huge-bodied and strong, went by force to the sphere of earth, brought the kings under his sway and bound all the sages. Nārada, who roams the three worlds, came there at will; he saw the gods in distress and descended from the path of the sky. "By that mantra given by me, let them all devotedly perform the observance, all of them with steady minds." Some of the gods at once bowed down to that two-tusked one; others worshipped him, speaking with voices stammering from joy. Brahmā said: Thus praised by the gods, the two-tusked lord god, supremely pleased, spoke, gladdening the best of the gods.

"Even so, tell me, O Brahman, the auspicious story of Mukundā." Brahmā said: When Rukmāṅgada had gone, she burned with the fire of love. (She was) of lovely form and greatly proud; (he was) heroic in giving, a crusher of foes, rich with the splendour of many ornaments, seated on a most costly throne. Devoted to her husband, greatly blessed, capable of cursing and of favour. At the śrāddha of that king's father the great sages assembled. (The place was) adorned with waterfall waters, with streams and with the best of sages; Gṛtsamada bowed to them and dwelt there by their permission. (A state) unattainable even by Sanaka and the others, long established in their observances. "Setting fear aside, say what you desire, O best of sages." "Give me knowledge of Brahman and (true) knowledge, O lord of the world, and firm devotion to you, and never forgetting (you)." Brahmā said: Then all the hosts of sages honoured him respectfully; O Brahman, they bowed to that Gṛtsamada, most excellent among the best of sages. Then, pleased by that austerity, the Elephant-faced appeared, making the directions free of darkness and veiling the orb of the sun, bearing in his hands an axe, a lotus, a garland and sweet cakes. Overwhelmed by his splendour, he steadied himself and bowed. Brahmā said: Then he installed, according to rule, an elephant-faced image made of Kashmir stone, by means of brahmins skilled in mantras. Brahmā went to the navel-lotus, Viṣṇu went to the ocean of milk. The demon's two mind-born sons were Pracaṇḍa and Caṇḍa.

As a great forest tract in summer by a wildfire, so Mukundā, my son, found no relief in the forest, though the breeze was cool. There in the assembly he spoke to Vasiṣṭha and the other sages. Gṛtsamada said: If I should not be Rukmāṅgada's (son), O lords of sages, then with the fire of my curse I will reduce you to nothing but ashes. Brahmā said: Having said this to all those sages, he went to his mother; Gṛtsamada asked her: Speak, wicked and over-lustful woman! Mukundā said: The best of kings, his mind bent on the hunt, was bold and purposeful; I saw the handsome Rukmāṅgada, fair in the three worlds. His face downcast with shame, he pronounced a curse upon his mother. The son said: Wicked, deluded, given to sin — become a thorn-tree in the forest! Having bathed there he performed recitation, poised on the tip of his toe, meditating with steady mind on the mighty god Vighneśvara. "(Make me) the one abode of devotion to you, able to draw the three worlds, renowned in the three worlds, to be saluted by gods and men — make me thus, O Vighneśa, if you are pleased, accomplisher of every aim; and let this forest attain fame by the name Puṣpaka, O lord of gods." Gaṇeśa said: Well, well, mighty-armed one! When I am pleased there is nothing in the three worlds hard to obtain for devotees, O bull among sages. Because Gaṇeśa granted a boon, they chose him for the sacrificial rite; and at the outset of every undertaking he remembered the worship of Gaṇeśa and the rest. Then the boy said: I am blessed by the sight of you; my father is more blessed today; my birth and my austerity have borne fruit. Your great greatness not even the hairs (of your body) know; if you are a granter of boons to me, then give me this, O Elephant-faced: let sages, kinnaras and cāraṇas always be subject to me; whatever I conceive in my mind, let that always succeed; let Indra and the other world-guardians always render me service; grant me many enjoyments here and liberation at the end. In the midst of Gaṇeśapura he made a great, golden, divine, auspicious temple adorned with gems and pearls. He installed Pracaṇḍa as overlord in Brahmaloka, and then himself made Caṇḍa the master in Vaikuṇṭha.

In a place made of creepers and flowers, with moon(light) and sandal too; neither laughter nor song nor dance nor any tale pleases her. "Since your mother was cursed by you, disregarding her, therefore I curse you, son: from you (will come) an exceedingly terrible son — with his gaze fixed on the tip of his nose, not looking in any direction, his senses conquered, his breath conquered, himself conquered, feeding on air, he will be, and he will attain great fame in the three worlds; he will be unconquerable by all the gods, save Rudra." Thus that sage attained renown in (regard to) the lord of the hosts; he practised supreme devotion, wholly unwavering, reciting the mantra. With the sixteen services he worshipped that lord, with countless salutations, with hymns and with prayers. Then he went to Kailāsa and shook it with his two arms; and Girijā, terrified, clung fast to Śaṃkara.

Food and water (were unwelcome) to her, her mind distraught, O lord of sages; from hunger, thirst and exhaustion sleep came upon her for a moment. He practised most dreadful austerity for a thousand divine years; when the sage Gṛtsamada, opening his eyes, looked... Once, O Vyāsa, that sage sneezed a mighty sneeze, making the directions, the sky, the earth and the mountain caverns resound. Having begged pardon of the god of gods and taken his leave, he went out; he gave many gifts to brahmins as each deserved. Then the great demon, eager for battle, went to Kailāsa; Mahādeva was pleased with him and with the demon's manliness.

Indra became aware of her, that beloved woman asleep in the lonely forest, tormented by desire and distraught for Rukmāṅgada's sake, my son. Then a fire arising from (his) eye scorched the thirty gods; then the gods grew anxious: "Whose portion shall this be?" As he looked in front, he saw a terrifying child, red in colour, loudly roaring, like a japā flower. Then that place of Tripura's came to be in Baṅgāla, (known) thus as Gaṇeśapura, granting every attainment to all. The bestower of happiness went outside to give a boon to his own devotee; he saw the demon Tripura and then said, "Choose a boon."

Assuming the form of Rukmāṅgada, he enjoyed that lustful woman; Śakra embraced her with delight, and Mukundā rejoiced exceedingly. Eating only one other fallen leaf, making the utmost effort, become like a post, utterly motionless; and seeing such a boy, a mass of splendour that again and again stole away the path of the eye's sight, he trembled, overcome with fear. Then that demon Tripura, made arrogant by the Elephant-faced's boon, ruled the worlds of men, bent on overrunning the gods. He chose: "If you are pleased, give me Kailāsa today." "Go to the peak of Mandāra, so long as it is my wish."

She too kissed that Rukmāṅgada again and again, my son; and he too crushed her full breasts with a tight fist. Ka said: At that very moment she left that body and became a jujube tree in the forest, shunned by flocks of birds and by egg-born creatures. He practised austerity for fifteen thousand (years) with unwavering mind; then Vināyaka, seeing his difficult austerity, reflected in his mind: "What obstacle has come here? I do not know." "By the lord of the hosts a wondrous son has been given to me." Foot-soldiers and horses and elephants and charioteers, very mighty, came to him from the ten directions to serve him. Śaṃkara too gave him Kailāsa for a short time; Girīśa himself went to Mount Mandāra, surrounded by his hosts.

Vyaṃśuka enjoyed Vyaṃśukā, sporting with her without hesitation; then she, as if ashamed, went back to her own house. Then, to show him grace, (the god) appeared, most radiant—just as a cow, hearing the calf's cry, runs at once. He looked again and again at that one of lovely face and beautiful eyes, the lovely golden armlet, the lovely crown, the lovely anklet. Kings became his servants, favourably disposed to him; those hostile went to their death, (though) lords of mind, to make war. Mounted on the peak of Kailāsa, the demon Tripura rejoiced. Having thus brought the gods under his sway, he came again to the nether world.

In the ninth month, at an auspicious hour, she bore a beautiful son, with all his limbs lovely and faultless, surpassing Kāma in beauty. "And where are your parents, where your abode? By him the deeds of Mukunda were never understood. Greatly delighted, he performed all the birth-rites and the rest. By that one's splendour the splendour of that great-souled sage was carried off, as the light of a star born of the moon (is carried off) by the sun's splendour. "I am able to overrun the three worlds and to make Indra of the gods subject to me—there is no doubt; you shall see my prowess." The mighty Tripura said to Vajradaṃṣṭra, Kālakūṭa: "Go with this third part of the army to the nether world." He gave gifts to the brahmins according to his ability and their deserts; and when ten days had passed the sage performed the naming rite. Then, closing his eyes, he trembled, utterly overcome; he fell fainting to the ground, his meditation and its blessing forgotten. Staying there, the king of the Daityas sent envoys to Śakra: "Let them bring that Śakra here in haste for (my) audience, or let them speak my word: 'Go now to the world of death.'" All the gods, dwelling in caves, brooded day after day: "How, or at what time, will his slaying come about?"

"For what reason, O god, has this great suffering come upon (us) always?"—since the mind bears the thought, "He is not to be worshipped in our row." "There I shall protect you; by conciliation, give up Amarāvatī. But if your mind is set on battle, then come quickly against me." "We do not know from whom or whence he obtained the boon." While the gods were thus troubled in mind, O best of sages—

"Having attained the highest attainment, you will come to fame in the world." Then the brahmin Gṛtsamada, having received the mantra from his father's mouth, meditating with unwavering mind on the god Gajānana—as he recited for years numbering fifteen thousand— And he trembled like a tree in the wind, the enemy of mountains, bewildered with anxiety, wondering "What is this?" Seeing Nārada, they all rose up at once in reverence, and embraced him and bowed and worshipped him in due order.

Devoted to observance, he became intent on recitation and meditation. When much time had thus passed for that bull among sages—in that land of Magadha, the king who was named Magadha— "By your austerity, (performed) on one toe, tirelessly, I have been pleased by you." Brahmā said: Having heard these fair words of the God of gods— They went; from his mouth arose fire, blazing in (all) the directions; there was fear among the gods and among the Daityas dwelling in the nether world. He blazed with the fire of anger, all his eyes turned red, as though reducing the worlds to ashes, as though drying up the oceans. They questioned him, when he had rested, about Tripura's boon and the rest. The gods said: The three worlds, with all that moves and moves not, are overrun by Tripura.

Overflowing with his own bliss, he bowed to him prostrate like a rod; supremely pleased, he spoke to that boon-giving Vināyaka. He told the envoys: "Let them go, let them go swiftly to battle." Himself mounted on Airāvata, the slayer of the gods' foes roared. "Our places have been seized; even our hair he has vanquished. To whose refuge shall we go today? How may his slaying come about?"

Seated on the seat of good law, steadfast, like a second Indra, endowed with the fourfold force, wise, giving honour to the learned—Gṛtsamada said: Today my birth is fruitful, and my austerity and observance, (in seeing) him who is of undivided bliss, who is one with Brahman, without form. Whirling his lovely lotus and fine tusk, filled with joy—hearing that trumpeting cry, the boy was as if overcome. With that great roar shaking the three worlds— And hearing his words, the envoys went back as they had come. "And by whom were the boons granted to this Tripura? Tell us, sir!" Nārada said: I shall relate in brief the great doings of the Daitya.

He had two ministers, treasuries of knowledge, surpassing Vācaspati in virtues; his wife was named Ambikā, of lovely form, abounding in virtues. Shedding tears from his eyes, he danced, giving honour. Dense with consciousness and bliss, beyond the reach even of the Vedas and the sciences— Opening his eyes he saw that god standing before him, four-armed, of great body, adorned with many ornaments. The gods too were armed, with various weapons and swords in their hands; some with javelins in hand, some with spears and lances in hand. For a thousand divine years he practised the highest austerity, and propitiated the mighty Gaṇeśa, the leader of the gods.

Summoned by the king, Vasiṣṭha, Atri and the foremost, masters of the Vedas (came); the ascetic Gṛtsamada of pure mind was called. Among the eighty-four lakhs of wombs, and among the best of them, and among human beings, O greatly fortunate one, the (four) classes there are the greater. With his palms joined he entreated that mighty one. The boy said: Why do you assail me, O god, your devotee, come to you for refuge? Thus, joined by the hosts of gods, the wielder of the thunderbolt went forth, the rite of benediction performed by the brahmins amid the sounds of many instruments. But no fear (of him) was granted (as regards) the Nāgas, except from Śaṃkara alone, the mighty one. "Let (us) reverently propitiate the lord of the gods, the elephant-faced."

Then, in the course of (a dispute on) scripture, Gṛtsamada spoke boastfully; and Atri said to him "Shame, shame!" in the presence of the sages. Among them too the brahmins are best, and among them the knowers, and among the knowers those devoted to observance, and among them the knowers of Brahman. "Be more gracious, O god; grant me all I desire." Brahmā said: Hearing his words thus, he withdrew his own radiance. Tripura, learning from the envoys' words of that preparation for battle, made his fourfold army ready and eager. "Let all worship the Lord of obstacles, giver of all attainments." The gods said: How is the worship of that wise God of gods (to be done)?
