Nārada said: The gods said to the slayer of Vṛtra, "Come out, O Śatakratu; for we are here together with Nārada, the sage of the gods." Covering their nostrils with the ends of their garments, O best of kings — then, when Indra had bathed well and rinsed his mouth again, the lord of speech (said to him): "How was the effort made by you to win the favour of this Gautama? And how did he declare the supreme mantra for my sake? Let all tell that." Beginning of chapter 34: Nārada said: At the foot of a kadamba tree, on an excellent seat, fixing his gaze on the tip of his nose and restraining his mind, the enemy of Jambha then muttered the six-syllabled mantra, O king. "The god beyond causes, unmanifest, the cause of the world's cause, whom you constantly meditate upon with this mantra, unwavering — you have grown weary for a long time" — so saying, (the god) became manifest. "Pleased with this austerity, I have come here to grant a boon. Imperishable, the supreme Self, having the universe for form, the lord of all — knowing you through fierce austerities, Sanaka and the rest attained release." The sage said: Hearing Indra's words, Vighneśa, lord of the worlds, whose voice was deep as a thundercloud, spoke in gentle speech. Even today that Gaṅgā of auspicious waters, by Śakra's ordinance, having performed the bathing upon his image, ever goes to her own abode. Vyāsa said: When that divine sage had gone, what did the king do then? Tell me, Rukmāṅgada, this delightful tale. "When her husband had gone to bathe, that wicked woman cursed me in fury; thereupon I sat down at the root of a tree, grieving." Having worshipped Vināyaka, he beheld a mass of radiance: a celestial chariot like the sun, and those brahmins and attendants, thronged with the hosts of Vināyaka, accompanied by apsarases and kinnaras. Bowing, the king asked them: "Who are you, whence have you come? Whose messengers? What business is there here? Tell it courteously." Brahmā said: Hearing the king's sweet words, the one who rode in the chariot (spoke). "How is it that he shows me such regard? I do not know the fruit born of the sacred ford; what excellent merit of mine, gained in another birth, has borne fruit?" Then king Rukmāṅgada, with his army, at the messengers' word, mounting the excellent chariot, came to the city of Kauṇḍinya.

Having gone to that sage Gautama and won his favour, we have come here to you; the means was declared by him, and a boon was granted to you as well. A thousand years have passed for him, O lord of the winds, for him who feeds on air; anthills and thickets have grown upon his body, for he stands as motionless as a mountain. Brahmā said: When the sage named Nārada, having given that very great instruction, had gone away, O son, Rukmāṅgada, filled with delight, beheld his own fourfold army. The messengers of Vināyaka said: You are blessed, O best of kings, in that Cintāmaṇi the Lord was meditated upon by you with your whole being. The pilgrimage has been properly made, gifts given according to rule, and Cintāmaṇi worshipped; now you are one who has accomplished his purpose.

When a fault has been committed, good men themselves make it known among people; and there they duly apply the remedy, so that it becomes of no effect. Then the blessed Gaṇeśa was pleased — he who is all-pervading, all-knowing, of great splendour — veiling all eyes with his own radiance that surpasses many moons. By her too the king was seen, disfigured — he who had the lustre of gold and the form of the husband of Rati; "formerly he was thus: how has he become like this?" — doubting, she asked the king the reason. Having said this, he bowed and worshipped his lotus feet, and entreated them all: "My father, O best of kings, is devoted to brahmins, truthful, terrible, of terrible valour." "Then we shall convey those two also, seated in the excellent chariot." Brahmā said: Hearing that speech, and having made an effigy of kuśa grass: "You are kuśa, you are the son of kuśa, fashioned of old by Brahmā; when you are bathed, he too is bathed, he whose knot-binding this is" — thus, having uttered the mantra for all of them in order.

By concealment the fault grows, but by disclosure it comes to dissolution; therefore you too, O Indra of the gods, come out and tell him. Four-armed, garlanded, with a jewelled diadem, wearing armlets, his cheeks adorned with earrings, bearing a necklace of pearls, anklets, and a great waist-cord high (about him). The commanders said: Having roamed over mountains, forests and rivers, we have come, O king of kings, beset by hunger and thirst, longing for the sight of you. By that chariot the sky and the ten directions were made to resound with the noise of instruments, with Vedic chanting, and with the cries of gandharvas and apsarases.

Tell that to the divine sage — the means spoken by the sage; do it: receive the great six-syllabled mantra of Vināyaka. He who is lotus-eyed and broad-lotused, with a great trunk, garlanded with a wealth of lotuses, whose form comprises all the gods, gleaming with vermilion, appeared in front. Looking at every step, they reached his lotus feet. Seeing this condition, they passed from sorrow to greater sorrow.

And Brahmā gazed at the toe (of the goddess) at the wedding of Girijā and her lord; then his seed spilled, and ashamed he went away with his face downcast. Seeing him, he became stricken with fear: "What is this? What has come upon me? And how shall I stay alive, made as I am of bones and breath?" "What was the cause of this for us? Tell us, O best of kings." The king said: I came on ahead, thirsty and hungry.

Knowing this, Maheśa by a device made him free of fault. As soon as he heard this speech framed by the host of divine sages: "What is this great obstacle today? I do not know by whom it was made. My body streams with sweat and trembles like a bodhi leaf. I quickly saw before me the household hermitage of Vācaknavi; going there, I saw his wife, of lovely face."

Indra came out from the lotus-sheath, O king, having respectfully heard the words of all the gods there. The lord of all-seeing eyes understood his distress thus, and Vināyaka spoke sweet words to that great Indra. "She was auspicious, Mukundā by name; water was asked of her by me. But she, wicked and wanton, spoke unauspicious words to me."

His limbs smeared with pus and blood, foul, reeking with stench — seeing him in that state, all the gods bowed to the lord of the gods. Vināyaka said: Do not be afraid, lord of the gods; how is it, O god, that you do not know me — that which is without qualities, without change, consciousness and bliss, eternal? "Make love with me; if not, I lay a curse on you." But she was refused by me by force, with a pure mind.

He imparted the great six-syllabled mantra of Gaṇeśa; and when the instruction had been given by him, he became of divine body. By the power of his former merit he beheld the sage Nārada; by him was told to me the excellent rite that destroys misfortune.

Thousand-eyed and glorious, he shone like the sun, the maker (of day). Then with the sounds of instruments and the shouts of victory of the heaven-dwellers... "Know that the arising, the dissolution and the preservation of the endless world-eggs is from me alone; choose what you desire, sinless one." Having gone to the field of Cintāmaṇi and resorted to Gaṇeśa's sacred ford, the greatness of that ford was told at length by him.

Nārada said: Having heard his delightful words, the smiter of Bala (Indra) came to awareness — (of) the venerable, great-bodied Vināyaka, god of gods. "Bathing there has been declared by the sage of divine sight; therefore I shall go to bathe, for the removal of my own fault."

Then all the sages, Nārada and the rest, gave their blessings; the gods embraced (him) with joy, and others praised him. Then, rising quickly, he bowed with supreme devotion; Śacī's husband addressed the one who was visibly of the form of Brahman: "Let all come with me to bathe there, if you wish; having bathed and given according to your means, and having worshipped Vināyaka —"

"But the station given me is artificial, arising from a hundred sacrifices; even there obstacles arise for me in many ways." "Shining with the colour of molten gold as before, O lord of sages." Then Rukmāṅgada held the word spoken by Nārada to be true.
