Chapter 31 begins. Rukmāṅgada said: “When Gautama came, what then took place, O great sage? Tell me all of it; my curiosity is great.” — “Only so much of your account have I heard, O best of sages.” — “Out of shame she did not come quickly; forgive my offence.” — But by meditation the best of sages understood it in an instant: “I shall not reduce you to ashes, since you are the Indra of the gods, you rogue.” Chapter 32 begins. Nārada said: “When Śakra had gone to Nalinī, I came to that city (of his), and there I saw the gods standing, with Bṛhaspati at their head. ‘Therefore, Nārada, let us go to conciliate the sage Gautama.’ Thus those gods set out, accompanied by Nārada. ‘Your birth, your stage of life, your austerity and giving, your body, your self and your vows have all in a single moment become fruitful indeed. For a creature becomes purified who is favoured by many; therefore I shall speak one mantra — and let them impart it to him.’”

nārada uvāca | nityakarma samāpyaiva svāśramaṃ gautamo yayau| ākāryaṃ nijapatnīṃ tāṃ dehi pādodakaṃ mama tebhyo hyakathayaṃ sarvamubhayoḥ śāpakāraṇam | ahalyāyā mahendrasya saṃyogaṃ ca virūpatām

Nārada said: As soon as he had finished his daily rites, Gautama went to his own hermitage. Calling that wife of his: “Give me water for my feet.” — “To them I told everything, the cause of the curse of both, and Ahalyā's union with great Indra, and (his) disfigurement.”

“Why have you not come before me today as you did before? Why has a seat not been brought? Why do you not speak sweet words?” — “Śakra came to have a thousand vulvas through Gautama's curse, O gods, for having violated Ahalyā; and she, from union with him, became a stone.”

Hearing his words thus, trembling like a creeper, with face bent down, she went out and after a moment came back to the sage. Brahmā said: Hearing what Nārada had said, all the gods were filled with grief; out of excessive sorrow they wept, with confused inhaling and exhaling of breath.

She fell to the ground with all eight limbs, her head at his feet; distraught and terrified of a curse, she then softly spoke to the sage. The gods said: (He) by whom a hundred sacrifices were performed, by whom the dānavas were vanquished, by whom the three worlds were guarded and the auspicious rank of Indra enjoyed —

"At dawn you had gone out to perform your own rite of bathing. The wicked lord of the gods, wearing your form, said to me: 'Many gods have been worshipped, and brahmins who are the best knowers of Brahman; enjoyments of every kind have been enjoyed, exceedingly hard for others to get.'"

"'I have seen a lovely, desirable woman finer even than the apsarases; my mind cannot stay steady in recitation, in the divine rite, in the daily observance. Therefore I have turned back and come: grant me love, O beautiful one.'" — Where will that god stay, how will he eat, how will he sleep? To whom shall we go for refuge today, for our own sake or for his?

"Deluded, I made the reply 'You yourself (are he)' — and so it was. But after smelling the divine fragrances, doubt arose in me again." Whom then will (he) protect — us, the rank of Indra, and Śacī? How might Gautama, best of sages, be brought to favour?

"'Evil-souled one, who are you? Tell us — otherwise you will become ashes.' At this, out of fear of the curse, the slayer of Bala became visible." Being separated from his own wife, recalling with anger the offence done by him — we see no other means than the grace of Gautama.

In declaring (a thing) oneself there is no fault; the fault is in declaring it to another. A mantra, one's lifespan, the household, ... wealth, pleasures, and medicines (are not to be disclosed). They, having approached the sage Gautama with palms joined, praised him with various words, having gone to him alone for refuge.

One should not make public honours, dishonours, or gifts. Hearing this, that sage, his senses unsettled by anger, (spoke). The gods said: We have no power, O sage, to tell your might. Who indeed could tell the weight of Meru, or even of Himavat, the streams of rain, the dust of the earth, or the sands of the Gaṅgā?

He cursed his own wife, the ill-behaved woman: "Become a stone! You did not recognise that form of mine, nor my nature, nor my doings." What dull-witted man could count the qualities of the ocean, or of Viṣṇu? For seeds sown at dawn, riches of grain at midday —

"By the very touch of his feet you will regain your own form." Nārada said: At that moment she became that stone, by the force of the word of that treasury of austerity. Entreated by Brahmā and the others, they appointed him over the birds; since the ocean of waters was swallowed at a single sip —

Hearing her curse, the chastiser of Pāka trembled, as the Himavat mountain does at the onset of a shaking wind. Another creation was begun by the wise son of Gādhi; Indra's arm was made rigid by the great-souled Cyavana.

He pondered in his mind: how am I to act now? In the middle of the ocean, or in a well, or in a pond, or in a lotus —. Therefore, with one's whole being, (there should be) service and obeisance to men such as you; seeing, speaking with, worshipping, and touching (you) destroys sin.

"Having become hidden, I shall stay there; then the sage will (only) know me (thus)." So the bearer of the thunderbolt went about in the form of a cat. Of you who delight in doing good and who show favour to the wretched — for Indra's sake you ought to show mercy to those who have come for refuge.

Gautama, not seeing him in the house, at the door, or in the hermitage (said): "Where has he gone, the foe of the dānavas, the defiler of my wife?" Gautama said: The sight of you does not come about for those whose eyes are of mere skin; by my merit it has come about — that fulfilment of men's desires.

One's own ideas, all of them beneficial, when prompted by another (turn) to ruin. The guru's understanding is weightier; a woman's counsel brings destruction. The gods said: By an offence against the Lord, Kāma came to be ashes; yet Śakra, though an offender, was not deprived of his life by you.

Living beings must undergo their karma, whether good or bad; having entered an animal womb, I shall wear away my own sin. — Laughing, he replied thus to all the hosts of gods. Gautama said: Not even the name of that fallen man, who has committed a crime, should be uttered.
