Vyāsa said: What is the means that the wise sage Viśvāmitra, being compassionate, told to Bhīma? Tell that to me, (that which is) the veil of delusion of my mind, as though it had come forth from death itself. — Hearing this, he seated in the chariot, and she too of the lovely smile, both resplendent with garments and ornaments, praised (by others), filled with joy. And the king, having gone to his palace, did just that: the worship of the gods and of the brahmins, and the libation (to them). Brahmā said: Then Rukmāṅgada saw the auspicious sage Vācaknavi, and Mukundā his wife, who spoke tenderly and sweetly. Mukundā said: He who wishes to force another man's woman by violence, he alone goes to hell, not she who is forced against her will. My mind would not waver anywhere, even if the great ocean should dry up. Rejected thus by him, filled with fury she cursed him. Then the king, rebuking her much as she spoke thus, went out in haste from that hermitage, greatly grieved. (8) He saw his own body white like the body of a crane, afflicted with leprosy, bereft of lustre and utterly loathsome. (9) Then, sunk in an ocean of anxiety, he said this to Gajānana: What offence have I committed against you today, and how is it that I have come here? The sage said: Seated at that banyan tree on a certain day, the king saw from afar the divine seer Nārada, the bull among sages, (and asked) the means for the destruction of that leprosy; and he (Nārada), full of compassion, — Nārada said: As I was coming, I saw on the way a supreme marvel. Mounting an excellent celestial car he went to the highest abode, going where (men) do not grieve and do not fall again anywhere. (5) He was seen by me, O lord of kings, there, just now, (going) for a bath; having bathed and worshipped the god, the lord who grants what is thought of — When Nārada, that bull among sages, was making ready to go, then, prostrating and honouring the sage again, he asked (him). (9) Rukmāṅgada said: In that holy field who formerly attained perfection, O auspicious and sinless one?

The king, utterly exhausted, made obeisance to them both. When that sage had gone to bathe, the best of kings begged — How indeed did (I) come to union with the wicked wife of the sage? Surely by you, O lord of perfections, the wicked have been greatly fostered. Having thus resolved, the king remained near the banyan; his servants, running here and there, caught sight of the king. He bowed and entreated, "Let (you) rest a moment"; and Nārada, a treasury of compassion, came down from the path of the sky. And by whom was set up that beautiful image made of gems and jewels? Tell me that it is Vaināyakī — my curiosity is great, O sage. (1) Good men such as you have their mind set on helping others; otherwise no purpose is seen in the worlds for (such) wandering. (2) The cloud rains upon the worlds, the earth is upheld by Śeṣa, and the sun too roams day and night for the sake of benefit, O twice-born one.

O son of Parāśara, best of sages, I shall tell it; hear it. Viśvāmitra, serene of mind and well versed in dharma, said to him: "Mother Mukundā, give me excellent cool water; without water my life-breaths will go to the abode of Yama." Having honoured (him) as far as he was able, he respectfully asked the sage: "I am named Rukmāṅgada, the son of Bhīma, of great strength."

Hearing his words, she, sick with love, said: "A man like you, more beautiful even than Māra, (I have not seen) anywhere." — "Ranging in the hunt I came to the hermitage of Vācaknavi; being thirsty, I made a request there for water, O sinless one."

Dharma, wealth and pleasure, liberation, and whatever else is desired — or else go to your own city, Bhīma, and do not worry at all. Neither among the gods nor among the nāgas nor in the hosts of yakṣas and gandharvas do I see one lovely in every limb (as you); my heart is set on you. His wife, utterly ruined, afflicted with desire, kissed me, with a mind of evil intent, when that sage had gone to bathe.

"(My mind is) exceedingly attached to drinking the nectar of your lip; grant that!" The sage said: But he, hearing that falsehood, being weary, was deeply pained. "Love me," she said, tormented by the arrows of desire; by (your) mastery of the senses, O god, and by (your) grace, she was refused.

The two ministers, together with the army and the townsmen, came to the king; some embraced the king, some bowed from afar and some close by. He spoke to her, who was as excellent as Tilottamā, with his senses restrained: "Abandon this boldness; my mind is not set on adultery, which is condemned." Utterly grieved, she cursed me with a cruel heart: "Become a leper, great villain, since you reject a woman full of desire."

The king entered the city, adorned with rows of banners, together with them all — its roads sprinkled with water, sweetly fragrant, resounding with many kinds of instruments. By the power of Vināyaka he was never at all attached there. "I do not wish to drink water given by you, wicked as you are." Hearing such ruinous speech, I went out from that hermitage; then I became a white leper — tell me the expiation, O sage.

The people said to one another: "This city shines now, as a woman does on obtaining a husband, or as a blind man on obtaining his like." "This is a seer's hermitage; go away from here, O inauspicious woman!" As he was making ready to go, she seized his hand and spoke, stricken (with desire): "By separation from me even Bhīma would sink in an ocean of grief." In Vidarbha there is a city renowned by the name of Kadamba; in its temple I saw the auspicious image of Vināyaka.

When those (people) had departed with betel, the two went to their own dwelling. Then on an auspicious day the king came to the temple of Dakṣa. "Or else I shall make you fallen from your kingdom, a wanderer in the forest." The sage said: Having said this she ran, tormented by the arrows of desire. which was made long ago in the city of Kauṇḍinya by the wise Dakṣa. There he worshipped that mighty Vināyaka at all times, ever intent on fasting, murmuring his mantra. In eating, in sleeping, in travelling, in speaking, and even in breathing, the king constantly thought of him alone, with a mind turned to nothing else. She fell fainting to the ground like a plantain struck down by the wind; and when she had risen, he, his mind averse to another's wife, spoke to her. Merely by bathing in the Gaṇeśa pond he obtained a divine body; and by gaṇas in the very form of Vināyaka (he was carried) from the sky.

The king said to him: "I know nothing other than your lotus feet." Then Vināyaka said: "A son of fair appearance (will be yours)." Brahmā said: Hearing this speech spoken by Nārada, O best of kings, he uttered not a word, sunk in an ocean of bliss.

He gave many gifts on the occasion of his son's birth; he gave him the name "Rukmāṅgada," which had been pronounced by the best of the twice-born. (1) "For you bear avatāras for the protection of the good; (yet) this wicked, wanton woman, proud of her beauty, has not been destroyed."

The boy grew day by day like the moon in the bright fortnight; the king placed his son under a teacher for his education. — How has that body of mine, beautiful and rivalling gold, come to such a raw (diseased) condition, and by what evil deed?

And he grasped by merely hearing it what was spoken by the teacher, and what was given by Kapila, the treasury of all knowledge. — I will always do devotion to you as before, according to rule; I go to no refuge other than you, O lord Gajānana. Before you, who are the same toward all beings and all-knowing, what is there for an ignorant fool to say, O treasury of compassion?

so'pi vidyānidhirabhūd gajakarṇa ivāparaḥ | rūkmāṃgado'ti balavān sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ nedaṃ śarīraṃ vaktraṃ vā darśayiṣye janaṃ prati | prāyopaveśanenedaṃ śoṣayiṣye kalevaram pṛcche tathāpi devarṣe saṃśayacchedanāya vai | nārada uvāca || sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ tvayā bhūpa lokānugrahakāraka

He too became a treasury of learning, like a second Gajakarṇa; Rukmāṅgada was exceedingly strong and skilled in all the scriptures. — I will not show this body or face to people; by sitting in a fast unto death I will dry up this frame. Yet I ask you, O divine sage, for the cutting away of doubt. Nārada said: Well have you asked, O king, benefactor of the world.

And he too made even greater devotion to Vināyaka, and day after day muttered the single-syllable mantra obtained from his father. And when night came on they each went to their own dwelling; the going of master and servant became like that of the two called cakra (cakravāka birds).
