The king said: "A marvel is this deed of Dakṣa's son that has been recounted; great amazement has arisen in me at it, O best of sages. Devoted to her husband, with her husband as her life, wholly given to her husband's word—in time there was born to those two an excellent son endowed with virtues. They expounded the treatises on dharma and certain other books; thus all of them, devoted to the god, passed many days. He bound that son firmly to a tree with hundreds of creeper-ropes, casting off affection for his son, like a second messenger of Yama. 'With undivided mind pondering the god, I give up my body in this deserted forest; the very moment that I made no flight, that very moment this body was offered up to the god.' 'The father will put him, together with his mother, out of the house. Tell me another wish of yours; even what is hard to obtain I will give you.'"
