Viśvāmitra said: Wandering and running this way and that, the son of Vallabha then, utterly distraught, did not notice that his garment and his ornament had slipped from his body. By the powers of his yoga practice (?) — the great image of Vināyaka, of many forms, with the radiance of the sun, fashioned of jewels and gold — he cast it outside, with a pitiless heart. Then my mother, out of grief, went wandering from city to city. Then I praised Gajānana with various hymns; well pleased, he said, "Choose a boon, O great-minded one." Then with a delighted mind, O brahmin, I have come into your presence. You are Mudgala, (and) that elephant-faced one (is you); the elephant-faced one is you, Mudgala. Do you perform the observance; he will be favourable to you. Gajānana would grant the desires wished for by you in your mind.

He asked the brahmins on the road, and even the trees, about Vināyaka: "Where has Vināyaka gone? If he has been seen anywhere, tell me."
