Nārāyaṇa said: Having prepared the haviṣya food on the seventh, restrained, and likewise at the breaking of the fast; rising at the hour of dawn on the next day, (one should present) the lovely materials of worship with their sixteen attendances, and eight fruits and sweet substances indeed, O Nārada, as was told formerly by Brahmā to the great-souled Kumāra: "Accept, O Hari, a most charming bed made of the finest of good jewels and gems, covered with fine cloth. Accept, O Hari, for drinking, the life of all seeds, joined with various flowers, strung with a fine thread." — What is the fruit in fasting, in the night-vigil, in the vow, O sage? And what is the sin in eating then? Tell (me), O best of the knowers of the Veda. One should break the fast at night, avoiding the great night (mahāniśā); breaking the fast in the forenoon is commended, after performing the worship of brahmins and gods. On the third day, O best of sages, the wise man breaks the fast. When six muhūrtas (of the night) have passed, then in the night itself is the great night. (One who eats then) becomes a worm in excrement for sixty thousand years, thousands of crores (of births) as a vulture, and a pig for a hundred births.

|| śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca || || aṣṭamī karkṣasaṃyuktā rātryarthe yadi dṛśyate || sa eva mukhyakālaśca tatra jātaḥ svayaṃ hariḥ
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: If the eighth (lunar day) joined with that (Rohiṇī) asterism is seen at midnight, that alone is the principal time; therein Hari himself was born.

jayaṃ puṇyaṃ ca kurute jayaṃtī tena saṃsmṛtā || tatropoṣya vrataṃ kṛtvā kuryājjāgaraṇaṃ budhaḥ
It produces victory and merit; therefore it is remembered as Jayantī. On it the wise man should fast, perform the vow, and keep the vigil.

sarvāpavādaḥ kālo'yaṃ pradhānaḥ sarvasaṃmataḥ || iti vedavidāṃ vāṇī cetyuktā vedhasā purā
This time overrides all (others), is primary, and agreed to by all — such is the word of those who know the Veda, and thus it was said by the Creator of old.

tatra jāgaraṇaṃ kṛtvā yaścopoṣya vrataṃ caret || koṭijanmārjitātpāpānmucyate nātra saṃśayaḥ
He who keeps the vigil then and, fasting, carries out the vow, is freed from the sin accumulated over ten million births — there is no doubt in this.

varjanīyā prayatnena saptamīsahitāṣṭamī || sā sarkṣāpi na kartavyā saptamīsahitāṣṭamī || aviddhāyāṃ kaṛkṣāyāṃ jāto devakinaṃdanaḥ
The eighth conjoined with the seventh is to be carefully avoided; even with the (right) asterism, the eighth joined with the seventh is not to be observed. It was in an (eighth) unmarred (by the seventh), with the asterism (present), that the son of Devakī was born.

tithyaṃte ca hariṃ smṛtvā kṛtvā devārcanaṃ vratī||| pāraṇaṃ pāvanaṃ puṃsāṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
And at the end of the lunar day, having remembered Hari and performed worship of the god, the observer (should perform) the breaking of the fast, which purifies men and destroys all sins.

upavāsāṃgabhūtaṃ ca phaladaṃ siddhikāraṇam || sarveṣvevopavāseṣu divā pāraṇamiṣyate
It is a component part of the fast, granting fruit and causing success; in all fasts the breaking of the fast is enjoined by day.

anyathā phalahāniḥ syātkṛte dhāraṇapāraṇe|| na rātrau pāraṇaṃ kuryādṛte vai rohiṇīvratāt
Otherwise there would be loss of fruit, when holding (the fast) and breaking it (are done at the wrong time); one should not break the fast at night, except in the case of the Rohiṇī observance.

sarveṣāṃ saṃmataṃ kuryādṛte vai rohiṇī vratam || budhasomasamāyuktā jayaṃtī yadi labhyate
He should perform (it) as approved by all, except indeed the Rohiṇī observance — if Jayantī conjoined with Wednesday and Monday is obtained.

na kuryādgarbhavāsaṃ ca tatra kṛtvā vrataṃ vratī || udaye cāṣṭamī kiṃcinnavamī sakalā yadi
And the observer, having performed the observance then, will not dwell in a womb (again); and if at sunrise there is a little of the eighth (day) and the ninth is entire,

vrataṃ tatra vratī kuryātpuṃsāṃ koṭiṃ samuddharet || nṛṇāṃ vinā vratenāpi bhaktānāṃ hīnasaṃpadām
The observer should perform the observance then; he would rescue a crore of men. Even without the observance, for devoted men lacking in wealth,

kṛtenaivopavāsena prīto bhavati mādhavaḥ || bhaktyā nānopacāreṇa rātrau jāgaraṇena ca
Mādhava becomes pleased merely by the fast performed; with devotion, with various services, and with keeping awake at night,

phalaṃ dadāti daityārirjayantīvratasaṃbhavam || vittaśāṭhyamakurvāṇaḥ samyakphalamavāpnuyāt
the enemy of the demons grants the fruit that arises from the Jayantī observance; one who practises no niggardliness with wealth would obtain the full fruit.
AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

kurvāṇo vittaśāṭhyaṃ ca labhate sadṛśaṃ phalam || aṣṭamyāmatha rohiṇyāṃ na kuryātpāraṇaṃ budhaḥ
But one practising niggardliness with wealth obtains a fruit corresponding (to that). And on the eighth (day) or in Rohiṇī the wise man should not break his fast;

hanyātpurākṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ copavāsārjitaṃ phalam || tithiraṣṭaguṇaṃ haṃti nakṣatraṃ ca caturguṇam
(doing so) would destroy the merit formerly earned and the fruit gained by the fast: the lunar day destroys eightfold and the asterism fourfold.

Those two junctures of the nāḍīs are called the beginning and end of the day. And having kept the vigil as an observance on the unmixed eighth day of (Kṛṣṇa's) birth — (whereas) the observance without a vigil (yields only) the fruit of a horse sacrifice for him — whatever (sin was done) in infancy, in boyhood, in youth and in old age,
