नारद उवाच ।।

nārada uvāca || atha krīḍāṃtare rādhā kiṃ papraccha hariṃ vibhum || kāṃ kathāṃ kathayāmāsa kathyatāṃ karuṇānidhe nābhipadmodbhavaṃ viṣṇoḥ stutvā taṃ vidhimīśvaram || rakṣitāraṃ ca taṃ viṣṇuṃ paraṃ sattvaguṇānvitam

Nārada said: Now, in an interval of their play, what did Rādhā ask Hari the mighty lord? What story did he tell? Let it be told, O treasury of compassion. — Having praised Vidhi (Brahmā) the lord, arisen from the navel-lotus of Viṣṇu, and that Viṣṇu the protector, supreme, endowed with the quality of sattva.

Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Rising from the pleasant enjoyment, Hari, placing Rādhā before him, sat in a valley of the Malaya (hills) at the foot of a charming banyan tree. — And the single ocean, and the dissolution, empty of being, terrible; of how many kinds is creation, O Śakra, and of how many kinds the kalpa, surely?

Rādhā questioned him, smiling and most charming — (about) the breaking of the thunderbolt-bearer's pride, a secret thing, lovely to hear. — And of how many kinds is the cosmic egg? (What of) Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara? How many Indras are there in the cosmic eggs, and who is able to go (to them)?

Śrī Rādhikā said: I have heard the glory of the trident-bearer, and the breaking of the pride of the god; and Pārvatī's breaking of pride, and ah, the marriage of the two. — A fool endowed with wealth does not acknowledge Prakṛti, whose nature is Brahman; she cursed him, and in extreme anger he received the curse of his own teacher. — Seeing her, Ahalyā, Gautama's beloved, smiling and casting sidelong glances, with broad hips and a charming pair of breasts — one's nature is brought about by (past) action, and it obstructs the family duty; though you are a knower who has understood the Veda, by your act you are greedy for a womb. — She is to be abandoned because of (this) enjoyment of desire; she is purified by undergoing (the fruit of) the act; she has no right to the offering to the ancestors, the offering to the gods, or to worship. — Tvaṣṭā, the father of Viśvarūpa, hearing (this), at once grew angry; saying, "Grow, O foe of Indra!" he performed the sacrifice. — Having comforted Śacī, her teacher went gladly to that lake; he summoned Śunāsīra (Indra), downcast and out of his senses. — The teacher said: Be steady, greatly fortunate one, obtain the unwavering Kamalā. — With honour he set (the craftsman) to build Amarāvatī; for a full hundred years the craftsman built Amarāvatī. — Surrounded by throngs of boys and girls, laughing with great high spirits, smiling, endowed with splendour — the brahmin said: I know Kaśyapa, dear friend, your father, the Prajāpati, and the sage named Marīci there, and the ample treasury of austerity. — If there is a count of the dust-grains on the earth, O lord of the gods, still there is simply no count of the Śakras: so the wise know. — And (seeing) a swarm of ants extending a hundred bow-lengths, looking at them one after another, the brahmin boy laughed aloud. — The brahmin said: This host of ants was created by me one by one in succession — giving happiness, giving merit, the essence, a means of crossing the ocean of hell; all this world, O Indra of the gods, with its moving and unmoving beings, is like a dream. — Why the matted hair on your head, and the circle of hair on your chest, very raised, somewhat torn out in the middle, O sage? — Servitude to Śrī Hari is hard to win; devotion and liberation are weightier; all lordship is like a dream, an obstruction to that devotion. — Thus has all been told, the release of Śakra from his pride; the breaking of pride was seen directly at Nanda's sacrifice, O queen of the gods.

Now, O Hari, I wish to hear the breaking of Hari's (Indra's) pride; and tell of the rest in due order, expounding it, O teacher of the world. — Śakra's lifespan and tenure is seventy-one yugas; at the falling of twenty-eight Śakras there is a day and night of Vidhi (Brahmā).

Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: The breaking of the pride of the lord of the gods, famed in the three worlds, incomparable nectar for the ears, beautiful — hear it, beautiful one. — Brahmā's lifespan is a hundred and eight by measure; what count is there of the Indras of the gods? There is no count even of the Brahmās.

Formerly the performer of a hundred sacrifices, out of pride having gladly performed a hundred sacrifices, became the overlord of all the gods, endowed with prosperity. — Where there is a counting of the cosmic eggs, where are Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara? — in the very pure water arisen from the pores of Mahāviṣṇu's hairs.

Day by day that lordship of his increased from the fruit of the austerities; Bṛhaspati had him undergo the consecration, the food being made ready. — As in a cosmic egg there is a made boat upon the water of existence, so by the measure of (a single) hair the cosmic eggs are countless.

He muttered the great mantra at Puṣkara for a hundred years, and he became perfected in the mantra, his wish wholly fulfilled. "And in the cosmic egg, how many kinds of gods are there that are equal to you?" Meanwhile the Supreme Person saw (him) there.

Once, through the curse of Prakṛti, his understanding destroyed, he did not rise up in his own assembly on seeing the guru, nor bow to him with joy; he said nothing, silent and grave, as though (absorbed) with his retinue. Having seen the laughter of the brahmin boy and heard his verse, he was greatly astonished, and with throat, lips and palate dry he questioned the brahmin again.

Then Bṛhaspati, out of anger, did not stay but went home; he did not remain near Tārakā, and went to the forest for austerity. Indra said: Why do you laugh at me, the lord of brahmins? Tell the reason quickly. Or who are you, hidden by māyā, in the form of a child, an ocean of virtues?

Dejected, he said in his mind, "Let prosperity go, let it be taken away." Then Śakra, regaining his wits (thought), "Where has my preceptor gone from here?" Hearing Indra's words, the brahmin boy spoke to him the essence of statecraft concerning the self, the seed of knowledge, the highest boon.

"Child, go home; you will not see the guru at present. When the bad days end you will get the guru back and regain prosperity again." (It is) the unsurpassed lamp of knowledge, covered over by the darkness of ignorance, hidden in all the Vedas, hard to obtain even for the perfected ones.

"Now, you fool of evil intent, enjoy the fruition of (your) deeds: in a bad day the fault lies with one's own guru, in a good day (comes) satisfaction." (It is) equal to the very breath of yogins, and the breaker of the pride of fools. "A good day and a bad day, Śakra, are the cause of pleasure and pain." Having said this, the devoted wife, the goddess Tārakā, fell silent. Śakra said: Brahmin boy, tell me quickly the ancient lamp of knowledge; I do not know who you are, a child, a mass of knowledge embodied in itself.

There he made various delightful love-play; and the sage's wife came, through desire, to swooning and drowsiness. "By deeds (one attains) the world of Brahmā, and by deeds the world of Śiva; heaven and the station equal to heaven, and the netherworld too, by one's own deeds."

"By one's own deeds the state of a ghost, and by one's own deeds brahmanhood; by deeds one is afflicted with disease, and by deeds alone exceedingly beautiful."

Great-grandson of the creator of the worlds, how has your mind become like this? Your maternal grandfather is Dakṣa himself, your mother is Aditi, a devoted wife. "Action is accomplished by one's own nature, and nature lives by practice." Thus was told the whole teaching devoted to the inner self.
