Nārāyaṇa said: Then, (seeing) Durgā in the form of Satī, lovely, her lotus-face unwithered, lying on the bank of the Jāhnavī — Mahādeva, and Nārāyaṇa, and Brahmā, and Dharma, Śeṣa and the divine sages, saying "O Īśvarī, protect Śiva!", praised her, the eternal one.

(They praised her) holding a rosary, with the radiance of refined gold, blazing with splendour, wearing white garments. She was wholly pleased at that very moment by their hymn, and out of compassion the beloved of his life spoke to Śambhu, the lord of her life.

And having seen Satī's body, he was burnt by the fire of separation; though he is the embodied mass of (all) principles, he yet fell into a swoon. Prakṛti said: Be steady, Mahādeva, my lord, dearer than life! You are the Self, the lord of yogins, my husband birth after birth.

Grief for a wife is powerful: it afflicts even him who delights in his own Self, higher than the highest, the seed of the Vedas, the teacher of the teachers of the best of yogins. And he who does not know Śakti and, lacking knowledge, reviles (her) — him it is fitting to abandon, O wise one; how then, my dear, do you abandon me? Beside Mount Śataśṛṅga, in Jambudvīpa and in Bhārata, in a very lonely place, at the undying banyan, on the Gaṅgā's bank, on the river's shore — seeing (this) the gods, astonished, came together into Śiva's presence, and the Lord Nārāyaṇa too, along with his attendants. The wise reckon all these things as being like dreams. Attain knowledge, Mahādeva, O eternal seed of knowledge! (Attain) knowledge, O treasury of knowledge; out of grief you have forgotten (it), O higher than the highest. A good day, a bad day — such always comes about, existence after existence. Some say Brahman is twofold, with Prakṛti first; hear those who say it is one, beyond Māyā and Puruṣa. If you desire Satī, O Śambhu, make praise of Prakṛti — that hymn which was given by you of old, gladly, to Durvāsas: "O Compassion, O Victory, O great Māyā, be gracious, Mother of the world! O Patient one, O Peaceful one, O end of all, you whose form is hunger and thirst, O great Īśvarī, the exposition of all the scriptures amid the divergence of opinions — whatever has been said in (the matter of) knowledge, forgive all that, O supreme Īśvarī." He showed the garland of bones on his own body, his ornament of ashes; making many excuses, he propitiated the beautiful one. (She said:) "I, O Maheśvara, obtaining birth as the beloved of the lord of mountains, shall become your wife; do you release the fever of separation."

In a moment, regaining consciousness, the three-eyed one spoke to her, gazing at her lotus-face — motionless, like another tree-stump. Having spoken thus and comforted Śiva, she vanished; and the gods, having consoled him whose neck was bowed with shame, departed.

With tears in his eyes and utterly wretched — he who gives refuge to the wretched and takes away the misery of the miserable — he lamented these further words. (Later) Giriśa, his inner self glad, went to Kailāsa, and with his host he swiftly danced, having wholly cast off the fever of separation.
