śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca || tadā devāḥ samālocya jagmuste brahmaṇo'ntikam || sarve nivedanaṃ cakrurbrahmāṇaṃ jagatāṃ patim

Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Then the gods, having taken counsel, went into Brahmā's presence; all of them made their petition to Brahmā, the lord of the worlds.

devā ūcuḥ || || tava sṛṣṭau jagatsraṣṭā ratnādhāro himālayaḥ || sa cetprāpsyati mokṣaṃ ca ratnagarbhā kuto mahī

The gods said: In your creation, O maker of the world, Himālaya is the receptacle of jewels. If he is going to attain liberation, from where will the earth (still) have jewels in her womb?

सुतां शूलभृते दत्त्वा भक्त्या शैलेश्वरः स्वयम् ।। नारायणस्य सारूप्यं संप्राप्स्यति न संशयः

sutāṃ śūlabhṛte dattvā bhaktyā śaileśvaraḥ svayam || nārāyaṇasya sārūpyaṃ saṃprāpsyati na saṃśayaḥ

The lord of mountains himself, having given his daughter with devotion to the trident-bearer, will attain a form like Nārāyaṇa's — there is no doubt of it.

Do you revile him and bring about a change of mind (in the mountain); apart from you no other is capable — go, O lord, to the mountain's house. All the gods rejoiced and quickly went to their own abodes. The fulfilment of a wish is for joy; its non-fulfilment ever increases sorrow. — to (him who is) without support, without attachment, without form and without qualities, who frequents the cremation-ground, the lord of all beings, the yogin. Ask the best of mountains: "I will not give my daughter to him; I will renounce all objects of pleasure and will even eat poison." "The mistress of the worlds has come to the creator through much merit"; having given water for (her) feet, he seated that chaste one on a golden seat. If a father gives his daughter to an unsuitable son (bridegroom) — out of (the pressure of) time, of greed, of fear, of delusion — he goes to hell for a hundred years. A householder gives his own daughter to one endowed with kingdom and wealth; but having given his daughter to one who is hateful (to her), the father becomes a slayer of the girl. Brahmā arose from the navel-lotus of that very one who lies upon the water; from the forehead of that creator arose Śaṃkara, the moon-crested. Give the girl of your own accord; give her, good sir, to Śiva. Or else she herself will go to her lover's abode and will see (him). The god who has Nārāyaṇa for his helper will come, having placed the foremost, the best of the gods, upon a chariot of the finest jewels. You yourself, O great king of mountains, by giving your daughter to Śiva, protect all your circle of kinsmen and bring the gods too under your sway. The eleventh, best of Manus, is called Dharmasāvarṇi; and after that Rudrasāvarṇi, a devotee of Viṣṇu, with senses subdued. The best of kings, being sonless, went to Puṣkara for austerity; and having practised austerity for a long time and obtained a boon from Maheśvara, he saw Padmā, a young woman, charming like a lotus. "Who is she, whose is she?" the sage asked the people standing nearby. "And having given the daughter to the sage, guard all (your) wealth; on account of a king's daughter all wealth perishes."

devānāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā tānuvāca vidhiḥ svayam || vacanaṃ nītisāraṃ ca karṇapīyūṣamuttamam

Having heard the gods' words, Vidhi (Brahmā) himself spoke to them a speech that was the essence of policy, excellent, nectar to the ears.

Brahmā said: I am not able, my sons, to perform the very hard thing, the reviling of Śiva, which has the form of the destruction of prosperity and is the very seed of calamities. — After that there arose the great Manu Svārociṣa himself; when Svārociṣa had passed on, O mountain, there arose the Manu Uttama.

Send the lord of beings (Śiva): he (himself) practises self-reproach. Reviling another leads to ruin, self-reproach rather to fame. — When Uttama had departed, the righteous Tāmasa Manu (came); then here arose the Manu Raivata, the best of the knowers.

Hearing Brahmā's word and bowing to him, the gods, O beloved, quickly went to Kailāsa, and having gone they praised Śiva. — Then Cākṣuṣa is to be known, and Śrāddhadeva as the seventh; the eighth is to be known as Sāvarṇi, the great son of the Sun.

All made their petition to Śaṃkara, the abode of compassion; and he, having reassured them and laughed, went to the foot of the mountain. — Formerly there was on earth a king Suratha, born in the line of Caitra; the ninth is Dakṣasāvarṇi, the tenth Brahmasāvarṇika.

Meanwhile Śiva himself, in the form of a brāhmaṇa, suddenly arrived there, with gracious face and eyes. — When these have passed, a day of Brahmā has elapsed; hear from me the whole account of Indrasāvarṇi.

Seeing him, Himālaya rose up together with his attendants, and bowed like a rod (prostrate) upon the ground with devotion (before) the unprecedented guest. — Having given the kingdom to the lord of gods he went to the forest for austerity; the son of the lord of gods was the glorious Śrīniketu of great strength.

To Bhava, whose death is unknown, unknowable, without protector, without kinsman, who wears a burden of matted locks like refined gold, and who is without wealth — Anaraṇya, best of kings, lord of the earth of seven continents, performed a hundred sacrifices with Bhṛgu as his officiating priest.

To him whose age is unknown, exceedingly aged, unchanging, the refuge of all, the wanderer, who wears snakes as his necklace, the mendicant — Thinking it trifling, the wise one did not at once accept the perishable rank of Indra; and in sport Indra was conquered, and in sport Bali was conquered.

Know Nārāyaṇa, best of the knowers, as born of (that) family; he is a suitable recipient for you in the business of giving away Pārvatī. Indeed the lords of the Dānavas were conquered by his own blazing splendour; and that king had a hundred sons, O Himālaya.

Question Menakā about the kinsmen quickly and with effort; ask them all carefully, O friend, except Pārvatī. The lord of kings sent out a spy in search of a bridegroom. Once Pippalāda was eager to go to his own hermitage.

For a sick man medicine is never (pleasing); what is harmful always pleases him. Having said this, the brāhmaṇa quickly bathed and ate, and, full of joy, in a solitary place of austerity he saw a Gandharva, his mind sunk among women, in the ocean of the erotic mood.

Calmed, he went to his own dwelling, O you who delight in Vṛndāvana. Having heard the brāhmaṇa's words, Menā spoke to Himālaya, her eyes tearful with grief, her heart tormented. And seeing him (the Gandharva) exceedingly drunk with desire and unaware of day and night, that tiger among sages became filled with desire.
