Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: By that very praise of Mohinī, Kāma became pleased, and standing in the sky he himself fitted an arrow (to his bow).

mantrapūtaṃ mahāstraṃ ca cikṣepa pitaraṃ mudā || babhūva cañcalo brahmā kāmāstreṇa ca kāmukaḥ
And with joy he loosed the great weapon, consecrated with mantra, at his father; and Brahmā became unsteady and, by that weapon of desire, lustful.

For a moment he gazed again and again at Mohinī's face; then, regaining knowledge, the Creator desisted, remembering Hari.

He understood in his mind the whole doing of Manmatha, and the Creator, overcome with anger, cursed him, though he was his son: "Infamy for a speaker of the Veda, and blame — what is worse than this? And a woman who has presented herself is not to be refused even by the passionate; but I am not (such) here, and I am the world's creator, therefore always your father — Manmatha, the friend of the moon, Jayanta, Nalakūbara. When Hari is pleased the world is pleased; when he is angered, existence itself is an enemy. Where is the class of the wanton woman, and where the class of the chaste?" By your curse he went away with Madhu, his effort destroyed. "Alas, I am unable to go, though I have been rebuked by you. Some are kings, some vaiśyas and śūdras, and some of mleccha castes; some are wise by their own action, all-seeing through knowledge; women shine by the dust of someone's feet, by (his) fame." Having said this, Mohinī quickly went and stayed before Hari. The Creator understood it all, the binding of every bond; unable to restrain his mind, in fear he remembered Śrī Hari: "O Lord, ocean of compassion, friend of the wretched, be gracious; you, O Maheśa, great knower, do not show me this evil dream."

"O Kāma, mad with youth, puffed up with deluding lordship: your pride shall be broken, because of your slighting of my teacher" — so (he said).

hatodyamo jagāmāśu manmatho madhunā saha || brahmaṇaḥ śāpabhītaśca śuṣkakaṇṭhoṣṭhatālukaḥ
His effort destroyed, Manmatha went off at once together with Madhu, afraid of Brahmā's curse, his throat, lips and palate dry.

ityuvāca jagaddhātā mohinīṃ madanāturām || caturvaktraṃ ca paśyantīṃ sasmitaṃ vakracakṣuṣā
Thus the world's Creator spoke to Mohinī, who was afflicted with desire and was looking with a smile, with sidelong eye, at the four-faced one.

brahmovāca || mātarmohini gaccha tvaṃ niṣphalaṃ karma cātra te || jñātastavābhiprāyaśca nāhaṃ yogyo'sya karmaṇaḥ
Brahmā said: Mother Mohinī, go; your effort here is fruitless. Your intention is known, and I am not fit for this act.

वेदे जुगुप्सितं कर्म तदेव कर्तुमक्षमः ।। वेदकर्ता स्वयमहं व्यवस्थाकारको भवे
vede jugupsitaṃ karma tadeva kartumakṣamaḥ || vedakartā svayamahaṃ vyavasthākārako bhave
That very act is condemned in the Veda; I am incapable of doing it. I myself am the maker of the Veda; should I become the maker of (its) rules (and break them)?

śrutau śrutamiti tyājyā sarvadaiva tapasvinām || aho sarvaiḥ parityājyā puṃścalī ca viśeṣataḥ
It has been heard in scripture that she is always to be shunned by ascetics; indeed, a wanton woman is to be utterly avoided by all, and especially (by them).

dhanāyuḥprāṇayaśasāṃ nāśinī duḥkhadāyinī || svakāryatatparā śaśvatparakāryavināśinī
She destroys wealth, lifespan, life-breath and fame, and gives sorrow; she is ever bent on her own purpose and ruins the purposes of others.

niṣṭhurā navaghātibhyaḥ sarvāpadbījarūpiṇī || vidyuddīptirjale rekhā lobhānmaitrī yathā bhavet
Harsh, worse than the nine slayers, she is the very seed of all calamities. Just as friendship arising from greed is (like) a flash of lightning, a line drawn on water —

paradrohādyathā saṃpatkulaṭāprema tatsamam || sarvebhyo hiṃsrajantubhyo vipadbījā sadaiva hi
— as prosperity gained by harming others, so is the love of a wanton woman: for all injurious creatures she is ever the seed of ruin.

vidagdhāyā vidagdhena saṃgamo guṇavānbhavet || jarāturo'haṃ vṛddhaśca tapasvī vaiṣṇavo dvijaḥ

strī cetprayāti puruṣaṃ viparītaṃ viḍambanam || sarveṣāṃ caiva ratnānāṃ strīratnaṃ durlabhaṃ param

svendriyāḥ śatravaḥ sarve śatrutā yannimittataḥ || vedoktācaraṇe sarvaṃ mitraṃ ca jagatāṃ jagat
