BvP 4 30.1

।। नारद उवाच ।। ।। । शरीरमञ्जनाकारं रूपयौवनवर्जितम्

Nārada said: O great sage, a secret and wonderful thing has been heard, O brahman. When the sage had died, what did Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is fond of his devotees, do? — "O brahman of crooked mind, (may) your body (be) crooked in every limb, of the colour of collyrium, devoid of beauty and youth."

श्रीनारायण उवाच ।।

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca || dṛṣṭvā mṛtaṃ muniṃ kṛṣṇaḥ saṃskāraṃ kartumudyataḥ || kṛtvā vakṣasi taddehaṃ rurodoccairyathā naraḥ atīvavikṛtākāraṃ triṣu lokeṣu garhitam || purātanaṃ tapo naṣṭaṃ sadyo bhavatu niścitam

Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Seeing the sage dead, Kṛṣṇa made ready to perform the funeral rites; placing that body on his breast, he wept aloud as a man does. — "Exceedingly deformed in shape, despised in the three worlds; let your former austerity be destroyed at once, assuredly."

And embracing (the body) with both arms, he crushed it in his overwhelming bewilderment; a mass of ashes came out of the corpse from the rubbing of his adamantine limbs. — Having said this, the wanton woman went out of desire to the world of desire; and before long the lord of sages no longer saw the (lotus) feet of Hari.

That body of the great soul was without blood, flesh or bone: for sixty thousand years he had been made to go without food, O sage. — Accompanied by the foremost attendants, excellent ones resembling Śrī Kṛṣṇa, a beautiful (chariot) appeared from Goloka before Hari. — Aṣṭāvakra too, the lord of sages, is renowned in the three worlds, that triple world which was filled by his fame and by his birth. — The world-maker said to them: "Sons, carry out creation!" They did not abide by their father's word, but went off to perform austerity for me. — "The goddess who presides over the mantra will at once become manifest to you; by the boon of the desired goddess a son will surely be yours. He would obtain a Vaiṣṇava son, a knower of truth, long-lived; he would be without wealth and unhappy; (though) mute, he becomes learned." — And in time a son was born to him from a portion of Śiva, devoted to brahman, Devala by name, as beautiful as Kandarpa. — And she, having carefully arranged her dress, bewitching the minds of the three worlds, approached him in a lonely place and spoke to him. — A wanton woman knows her paramour to be dearer than all; if she is abandoned by him, she is ready to kill him. — He who abandons his own wife and takes another man's wife suffers loss of fame, wealth and lifespan, and is dead while living. — The brahmin, hearing Rambhā's words, became absorbed in meditation; keeping silence he said nothing, and she cursed him in anger. — From being separated from the lotus feet he became greatly distressed, seeing his own body deformed and bereft of his former merit. — Then the inside of the sage, who had given up food, was full of ashes; he came to the Malaya valley — for the sage's sake, by me, O beloved.

The blood, flesh and bone of him who was without outward consciousness, whose mind was on Hari's lotus feet, were burnt up by the blazing fire of his belly. Out of grief he made a fire-pit and was about to give up his life-breaths; he was seen by me, was given a boon, and was awakened with divine knowledge.

Having built a pyre of sandalwood, Madhusūdana performed the fire-rite and, out of grief, laid (the body) down there itself. And consolation was given with affection, whereupon he became calm; and seeing at once the eight crooked limbs of the great sage...

He set fire to the pyre, having laid wood upon the corpse; and when the pyre was ablaze the Lord swooned for a moment. — That name of his, "Aṣṭāvakra," was made by me in play; at my word he came in haste to the Malaya valley.

Descending quickly from the chariot, the foremost attendants of Hari, all of them alike in form, bowed to Rādhikā and her lord; and having made the lord of sages, who had taken on a subtle body, bow down, and having placed that body in the chariot, they went to the highest Goloka.
