nārada uvāca || dvādaśīlaṅghane doṣaḥ śrutastvanmukhato mune || parābhavo muneścaiva nṛpatrāṇaṃ hareraho
Nārada said: The fault in transgressing the twelfth day has been heard from your mouth, O sage, and the sage's defeat, and — ah! — Hari's protection of the king.

Nārāyaṇa said: This Ekādaśī vow is hard to obtain even for the gods; it generates the love of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and is the best austerity of ascetics. As good character is among friends, as disease is among enemies, O sage; as fame is among the famous, as a house is among householders; as among women Śatarūpā is the excellent, supreme best; and as among the Manus Svāyaṃbhuva Manu himself is the best — (so is this vow). Here (for one who breaks it) there would surely be the ruin of his lineage and the loss of his fame; and in the end, O twice-born, he would dwell in a blind well for a hundred manvantaras. Thus, O brahman, this settled conclusion has been told, as it is heard in the Veda. Now learn the procedure of this vow; I shall tell it to you. Having fully worshipped these — Gaṇeśvara, the maker of day (the sun), Fire, Viṣṇu, Śiva and Śivā — and having bowed to them, one should perform the vow while remembering Hari, (him) whose form is fashioned of the essence of good jewels, whose crest is bright with a diadem, whose hand is laid upon the playful flute, who is worshipped by gods and demons. "Well ablaze day and night, made of the essence of jewels, and again the seed of the destruction of darkness — let this lamp be accepted." "Strung with flowers of many kinds on a white thread, the foremost of ornaments — let this garland be taken, O Lord." "Food indeed is the life-breath of living beings, fashioned of old by Brahmā; you, in the form of Viṣṇu, give me the fruit of the vow and of the fast."

(He suffers) punishments of the Ekādaśī (kind) numbering as many as the yugas; having stayed in the terrible Kumbhīpāka (hell) he becomes a caṇḍāla, and thereafter, afflicted with wasting disease for seven births, he is at last freed from the sin — so said the lotus-born (Brahmā). Whoever, deluded, out of ignorance oversteps the Daśamī by even a fraction of time, from his house Śrī departs at once, having pronounced a dreadful curse.
