When the garment fell to the ground, the lord of sages left off his austerity and by meditation understood the whole calamity concerning his daughter. Seeing (her) dead, Durvāsas — with distress in his mind, O sage — with effort brought the great sage back to consciousness. Of the great and of the tiny creatures, of all living beings always, the Lord, the treasury of compassion, is the creator, the protector and the ruler. (He was) devoted to the Ekādaśī vow, intent upon the worship of Kṛṣṇa, unstained in all his acts, and a doer of what is offered to Kṛṣṇa. "But I shall mutter the aghamarṣaṇa mantra and come back very soon; wait a moment, O king" — saying this the sage went away. "Guard the fruit of the fast, the water from Kṛṣṇa's feet; having quickly eaten, O king, the water — the eating of that is no eating." And for the protection of his devotees, small and great, Śrī Hari, fond of his devotees, kept his discus continually. "He by whose playful knitting of the brows (beings) appear and disappear — his devotee, dearer to him than life, you are slaying: by whose power? Go quickly to Vaikuṇṭha; Vaikuṇṭha is your refuge. The Lord, an ocean of compassion, will surely grant you freedom from fear" — (him) whose face is gracious with a slight smile, who is eager to show favour to his devotees, (whose crown) is wrought of the finest of true jewels, with a diadem for its blazing crest. If the Vedic texts, the makers of the smṛtis, and Speech herself are unable to praise (him), who am I — a brahmin who knows the Veda, a pupil? What can I praise, O giver of honour? "And knowledge would arise for others by hearing scripture from the mouth of the good; the scriptures are my own embodiment, and the good indeed move about (as such). And I am the might of all, the lord, the sustainer; yet I am not (only) all-pervading nor independent — I am subject to my devotees day and night." Mahādeva said: O friend of the wretched, lord of the world, this brahmin is not outside the world; protect this wretched man who has committed an offence and has come for refuge. Sarasvatī said: I shall instruct the father of the gods, the wish-granting scripture. O Lord, you are the master of all and are able to protect all. This very day, free from care, I shall surely eat in happiness, making with affection whatever thing a devotee gives to be like nectar.
